I'm okay with keeping fighting styles, however, I want them to be super simple. Meaning, fighting styles would have pros and cons, (+5 ATK -5 DEF) (+10 SPD - 10 DEF), etc, etc.

Fighting styles cannot be changed mid-post, they can only be changed in a new post. Also, currently, fighting styles will NOT level up. This may be added later, but not initially.

I'd like to do this, we'll have to develop it some more though. I'm not sure how we'll track XP in it, but I'm sure we can figure out some way to do so that works out. Perhaps we can limit a style to a post (as in, if you swap out styles, it won't take effect until your next post so you count the number of posts in each style). We can find a way to police this so people don't just do short posts, perhaps the XP gained towards the style could be based on the words as is normal XP just via a different formula?

EDIT: Removed previous link to content and just copied and pasted it in here for easier discussion.

Fighting styles are another way for fighters to differentiate themselves. A fighting style starts out as a simple set of stat bonuses. As it levels, the fighting style unlocks fighting-style-specific perks. The perks and stat bonuses are only active when that fighting style is “active.”

Fighting styles are akin to stances in some other games in the way that a player can switch in and out of fighting styles during combat. Switching to another fighting style requires action points. Action point cost for switching fighting styles can be reduced with items, perks, or traits.

Opportunity
Fighting styles add a dynamic element to combat, that can change from turn to turn. Unlike techniques, traits, and perks, which won’t change during the battle, a fighter can really use fighting styles in combination with technique combining to throw off his opponent.

Perceived challenges
I’m not sure how the fighting style should level, exactly. I was originally thinking that fighting styles could be tagged similar to techniques, and that could still be the case. Unlike techniques, though, fighting styles are active all the time and can switch mid-post, so I don’t know how tagging translates to points. I think rewarding a fighting style tag per post would probably lead people to end up writing shorter posts. Tagging per thread could lead to a similar behavior.

Other notes / things that should go on the page
“Before a fighter has learned a fighting style, he should take the opportunity to experiment with his roleplaying style and get a feel for which fighting style he should learn first. The first fighting style chosen should really serve to enhance your fighting style. The last thing you want is to choose a fighting style for which you have to work at altering your writing style. Use subsequently learned fighting styles to broaden your writing technique.”
