Frantz moved with the group feeling he had made the best choice in this situation. While he may be a soldier for Burmecia, with the Queen gone there was little he could do for his mission and with the dangers associated with the Mist it seemed imperative that it was investigated for the good of Burmecia. Frantz was willing to take any repercussions should they come. The nervousness that filled his body as they board was one boat on the way to the market. Frantz was unsure what he was expecting when leaving the castle, but due to being lost in his own thoughts as they traveled he would have believed they were teleported should someone had told him that. Before he noticed, the group walked past the markets, through the gates, and were staring at what was most likely The Pyrefly. The ship was only a fraction of the size that his anxiety had made it out to be and he was somewhat relieved by that. Airship travel seemed to be a norm on this continent so Frantz just continued with the group as if he had traveled this way many times before.

  Chapter I: Memories of Mist

The streets of Alexandria were alive and bustling with activity as the citizens moved about with purpose and order in their dedicated efforts to rebuild their grand city. Erlein moved quickly ahead of the mage Vivi and the Bermecian Frantz, passing through the cobble stone streets which were lined with archways and entrances to the homes all with their red clay tiled shingles. The three moved down a alleyway, much of the light filtered out here only replaced with the raucous sounds of laughter coming from a small theater to their left. They moved through the markets quickly and found their way towards the city gates where children played without a care in the world.
” That's her, the Pyrefly. ” Erlein said in a proud tone. His ship was small, perhaps thirty feet in length, though it seemed much larger due to the massive dirigibles that served to lift the shift off the ground, both situated above the smaller wooden ship. ” It might not look like much, but it's pretty fast and it doesn't require the Mist to operate! ” Erlein continued to speak as he reached the ladder that lead upwards and started to climb, hurling himself over the starboard side of the airship. The deck of the ship was mostly clear though there were a few barrels and crates. Near the stern of the airship the small cockpit was enclosed in wood and glass, and seemed to also house a stairwell down into the belly of the ship, where the sleeping and living quarters were located.
” Let's get this thing in the air, everyone help me untie the lines. ” Erlein spoke as he began to make his way around the railing of the ship. ” We can make it to Treno before nightfall or head straight for the Mist, which will likely only take up a few hours if we follow the ridges rather than passing over the Evil forests and plains of the lower continent. ” Erlein continued to speak, gauging what the party thought should be done first.

It had been only a few months since Bahamut had ravaged Alexandria, destroying parts of the castle and many of the homes of its citizens. Yet, walking through the city streets and through the market, one would never be able to tell from the demeanor of its citizens. Sure, there were temporary fixes patched onto various buildings and hole in walls and ceilings, but the people seemed cheerful, hopeful even. For life had changed tremendously since Queen Garnet replaced her mother. Her leadership style showed the citizens that their wants and needs were important, which invigorated the people, leading the economy to recover at a record pace. The group raced passed stalls of food, weapons, clothes, knick-knacks and various other goods; it was truly a marvel to behold. There was no time to behold it though, for the mission that this group found themselves on far outweighed the wants and needs of exploration and gazing. Without making a single stop to purchase any supplies, the pitter-patter of the group's feet echoed off of the cobblestone streets. It wasn't long before they had reached the city gates and the Pyrefly came into view. It was a modest ship and one that didn't require Mist, a technology that was only recently discovered a few months before when Cid debuted his own ship that didn't require Mist. With the disappearance of the Mist, it soon became a technology that began to grow rapidly, otherwise, the economy of the continent would quickly surmise to extended shipping times.

As they arrived at the ship, Erlein barked out a few orders to undo the ropes to allow the ship to rise up into the sky and so that they could begin their quest towards either Treno or to the Mist itself. Vivi looked around to the various points on the ship were the ropes were knotted up and made his way around to assist in the untying of the ropes. It would take long before the group was finally in the air. As he did this, he thought about their future destination and he was sure Treno was the perfect place to begin their search. Dr. Tot would be a great source of intelligence and perhaps may even have some ideas as to what could be happening, he was sure to be studying the phenomena with the appearance of Mist in Treno itself.

“I believe we should make our way towards Treno to see Dr. Tot,” Vivi stated, giving his opinion on the group's destination.

Ropes and knots were something Frantz understood. He deeply hoping to not be asked to assist with anything else regarding the airship as he was unclear how much the average person knew about piloting an airship and knew that if he was busy doing something then he would probably be safe. Frantz moved towards the rest of the group and nodded with Vivi's suggestion, “I agree. It would be best to get all the information we can get before investigation on our own.” Frantz was hoping that the Doctor would have most information regarding the Mist. Such a mysterious phenomena, Frantz wanted to know more about it. It seemed to be a bane on this continent bringing monsters, but also led tho their greatest inventions of all times, airships. With such varying applications, who else know what it could be used to do.

  Chapter I: Memories of Mist

” Then straight to Treno it is! ” Erlein said with exuberance, feeling by having enlisted such help that a speedy resolution to the fears surrounding the reemergence of the Mist would certainly be on the horizon. ” You're both welcome to head below deck if you like, I can pilot this thing myself. ” Erlein continued motioning that the stairs that would lead below were in the cabin where he was currently taking the Pyrefly's wheel in hand in preparation for taking control.
A light breeze rocked the airship to the port side as it came free of the moorings and began to gain altitude, the large props that were located on both sides of the vessel began to spin with life which sent the ship lurching forward as it began to pick up speed. Erlein briefly looked through the rear glass of the cabin back at Alexandria, still marveling at the events of the past hour and the promise of adventure in the immediate future, his first taste at something real and important. He had waited for this moment much of his young adult life, dreaming of world spanning adventures, hearing the tales of travelers and most recently the epic adventures of Zidane and crew. To find himself in league with one was still unreal, he would make the most of it and hopefully do some good at the same time.

The ropes that held the airship in place plummeted to the ground as the new band of travelers untied them. It was only minutes later that the ship began the rise into the sunny and blue skies. In just moments, Vivi went from looking up at the birds to watching them fly around in front of his very eyes. Being high up in the air aboard an airship brought back the memories of the recent adventures he had gone on with his friends and he missed them all so. Erlein invited the group to take to the lower levels and relax, but Vivi much enjoyed the fresh air. It wasn't long before Vivi found himself on the deck standing out near the edge of the airship and looking over at the lands below. It was moments like this that Vivi would miss the most when whatever it was that powered him finally stopped working.

As the airship took off, Frantz felt the feeling of being weightless for a moment causing the sensation of his stomach hitting his feet. The feeling was jarring, terrifying, and then eventually exhilarating when he realized that he wasn't in any immediate danger like his mind was trying to tell him. Frantz went to grab a nearby banister as he found his balance then released as he got a feeling of how the ship swayed. Erlein's invitation to go below deck was much welcomed due to the anxiety of being asked to help, but after some thought it would make sense for Erlein to be able to fly the ship himself. Rather than wanting to let such a moment pass him, Frantz stepping forward and began experiencing a view that none of his people had every experienced. After taking in the view, Frantz turned to Erlein, “Mind if I watch you fly? I have always wanted to learn.” While not entirely true, Frantz believed this to be a way for him to learn more about the culture of the continent.

  Chapter I: Memories of Mist

” Of course not, by all means enjoy the view and learn what you may. ” Erlein responded to the Bermecian as he eyed the mage Vivi who had made his way to the rail near the bow of the ship, his hat whipping in the strong winds that lashed over the deck of the Pyrefly.
Erlein handled the helm calmly, even though his body was surging with excitement at the promise of adventure. Below the cliffs that dropped down to the rolling plains of the lower continent flashed by quickly, Erlein would follow the curving mountains and cliff sides all the way to Treno, avoiding any deviations if possible. Time when flying seemed to be caught in the winds and blow past and before long they had crossed waterfalls and forests that would signify that Treno was growing near. As Erlein looked towards the horizon expecting to soon see the silhouette of his home he noticed that the distant sky was becoming hazy, the sunlight becoming filtered.
” What is this… ” Erlein spoke out loud as he wondered to himself, his eyes briefly darting towards Frantz. ” It's Mist. ” he said bluntly when the first sharp disturbance rocked the ship, seemingly sending it sideways several meters. Erlein felt his heart rate rise quickly and he secured his grip on the wheel as the second burst rocked the Pyrefly sending small knick knacks flying about the cabin. ” This doesn't look good. ” Erlein said matter-of-factly as the density of the Mist grew around them.

The peacefulness and calm that Vivi felt as they flew high above the lands below was something that Vivi had not felt in a very long while.  Most of his life he was chasing his identity, trying to figure out why he was and who he was and then, of course, his journey took him on the adventure of Zidane.  While it was an adventure that included moments of joy and happiness with his fellow party members, there was always that lingering dread in the back of their minds.  For they knew that it was their journey and their success that would determine that fate of so many people.  Indeed, many individuals did perish, countless lives lost in the battle against the Queen and Kuja.  Then, even with the war over, it was always so frantic trying to help rebuild Alexandria after it's devastation at the hands of Bahumut, and Vivi's own constant worry about his limited lifespan.  Up here though, high above the world, all of that went away briefly.  Below them, the trees swayed in the gentle breeze and the sun radiated off of the canopies.  They flew over great big waterfalls that crashed into lakes below them with rivers expanding in many directions.  Mountains flew by, some small, some large.

Then it was all gone.  The airship began to rock and sway as if something was pushing against it.  Erlein commented on the approaching Mist, but Vivi had flown through Mist before and it was never so violent on its own.  Could something be out there right now?  Hidden amongst the thick Mist, waiting for an opportunity to strike?

“Be prepared for anything, for the Mist can drive even the strongest creatures into a fury,” Vivi stated as he pulled out his own staff in preparation.

Frantz watched as Erlein flew the airship, doing his best to relate Erlein's actions to the changes that occur with the airship. Frantz had seen airships flying since coming to this continent, but did not understand how amazing of an experience and invention the airship was. He got lost in the view and for a moment forgot that he was high in the sky until the airship rock back due to the mist. Frantz grabbed onto the railing to brace himself out of fear, feeling that he would begin tumbling out of the airship any moment. Frantz had seen mist before, but nothing like this. The Mist was dense enough to affect not only visibility, but the airship as a whole. Frantz could understand why the people were so terrified of the Mist, even beyond the idea of monsters lurking in the Mist. Frantz began to picture the Mist taking on the form of a hand and throwing the airship out of the sky. Frantz's eyes widened for a moment as he gripped onto the railing tighter and was frozen in fear not having expected the Mist to appear as terrifying as it is when at the whims of the airship.

  Chapter I: Memories of Mist

” I'm going to have to put her down! ” Erlein shouted over the howl of the gusting winds which carried the Mist upwards to them. ” I've never encountered anything like this before! ” He continued, looking over towards Frantz who seemed to be holding on for dear life.
Erlein felt the Pyrefly rock hard as he tried to lower it's altitude, almost as if something had rammed it. Casting the thoughts aside he did his best to retain control of the airship and guide her to the grass below when once again the enter ship was rocked by as seemingly massive blow.
” What the he— ” Erlein had begun to say when the massive wings of the giant bird cut through the Mist for a second before the ship was struck once more, this time splintering the port side railing into hundreds of pieces which were caught in the misty gusts and torn away from the ship.” —ll was that. ” he finished his thought sensing that they were under attack and he would have to maneuver the airship to the ground as fast as possible.

As the ship rocked back and forth, Erlein prepared to take the ship down as the conditions for flying dramatically decreased.  Steadily, they began to lose altitude as the roar of something in the mist could be heard and a great gust of wind battered the ship and a giant shadow covered the airship.  It did not take long before the group found out what was attacking their ship as the wings of a giant bird manifested above the ship.  It was important that they landed the ship, fighting the bird in its own territory would put them at an extreme disadvantage, especially in this mist where their visibility was quite low.  Landing the ship, however, would be difficult with the bird attacking it.

I'll try and buy you some time to land the ship!” Vivi exclaimed as he took his staff and began to channel some magic into it.  Sparks began to spiral around the staff and climb from the base to the tip, as it did so, Vivi raised the staff into the air and cast a Thundara spell towards the monstrous creature.

Frantz gripped onto the railing harder as the ship was rocked by the zuu. Frantz had been trained to jump to extreme heights and free fall down, but crashing in this airship was one of the most terrifying experiences of his life. It was until the airship hit the side of a cliff that he began to calm down. With knees bent for balance, Frantz let go of the railing and grabbed ahold of his ice lance. Following directly behind the bold of lightning, Frantz jumped into the air and came down, lance tip first, straight down onto the zuu, causing the beast to fall with the airship for a moment. As the beast began to retaliate, Frantz jumped off the bird and onto an outcropping of the cliff and began taking small jumps down the cliff to keep up with the airship's decent.

  Chapter I: Memories of Mist

The flash and crackle of lightning manifesting itself from the curl of Vivi's staff burst into the cabin of the Pyrefly in an instant after Vivi raised his oaken staff from the bow of the airship. The flash subsided quickly but the thunderous rumble seemed to linger, cascading down the side of the massive cliff side towards the rolling plains below, leaving Erlein in momentary awe.
” Amazing. ” Erlein manged to mumble as his hands held the helm of the airship steady, moving away from the giant beast towards the ground atop the cliffs below. ” You're both going to need to brace yourse— ” Erlein had begun to say when he watched Frantz move from the cabin outward swiftly and with an unexpected burst leap from the deck of the Pyrefly into the air towards the gargantuan Zuu, weapon in hand.” —lves…. ” He completed his thought, even though it no longer applied to the Dragoon.
The winds were lashing around the airship as it made it's descent towards the cliff side, striking the ground with enough force to heave massive amounts of dirt onto the deck and even into the cabin and break almost every tethered item on the entire ship free.

It seemed like only moments had passed since the lightning manifested from Vivi's staff and struck the monstrous Zuu and the crew found themselves barreling towards the ground.  The landing was hard but it was quick and as it struck the ground Vivi fell down to his knees, his staff falling from his hand and landing with a hard knock against the wood.  There was no time to think about what had happened, Vivi doubted that the beast was taken care of.  Quickly, he lifted himself off of the ground. With a quick swish of his hands, he brushed the debris off of his knee and bent down and clutched his staff.

With his staff in hand, Vivi quickly departed the airship and took a defensive posture, prepared for what was to come next.

Frantz continued to jump down the side of the cliff, following with the airship and the Zuu. As the giant bird got closer to the ground, Frantz stopped his descent, bent his knees, and jumped high into the air above the Zuu once again. Frantz once again felt weightless as he hit the height of his jump, but this time it was a reassuring feeling. The dragoon allowed his head to fall backwards as he back flipped till his head was pointed towards the ground, lance facing towards the Zuu. Frantz began to spin as he descended towards the Zuu until his lance felt the Zuu's flesh. Using his lance to right himself, Frantz jumped off the Zuu and landed back on the ground by the airship, “You two alright?!”

  Chapter I: Memories of Mist

Things seemed to occur in slow motion as the ship tilted to it's starboard side and began to descend much quicker than Erlein had intended. The wind was whipping around them, finding it's way into the cabin as the airship listed and with a bone jarring heave smashed into the ground sending Erlein tumbling to his left from the cabin onto the ground below with a heavy thud.
” Yeah I think I'm alright. ” Erlein called back, unsure of who had asked the question as he gained his bearings looking on the wreckage of his airship which he had been thrown clear of. ” Oh man… the Pyrefly… What a mess, ” Erlein was talking to himself at this point, as if he had forgotten entirely about the colossal bird that was causing the wind to thrash around them. Looking from the wreckage he caught sight of Vivi who seemed to be focused ahead, staff ready. Erlein's eyes followed towards the sky, his mind settling, focus of his own returning. His hands wandering towards his body he tapped and felt along his waist before settling on the hilts of the daggers which were sheathed on his belt. Pulling them free Erlein stepped forward towards Vivi and Frantz his mind clearing, knowing that they were about to engage in battle.

Days and weeks had passed since Vivi had last felt the thrill of battle.  However, there was no rust in his form or in his mind.  The sensation of the fight brought him the memories of the many battles he had once fought in, bringing down the smallest of creatures to the largest of creatures.  Vivi tracked Frantz as he descended down from the cliff sides and taking advantage of his ability to jump through the air and use his lance to take a shot at the Zuu.  As Frantz landed, Erlein soon also made his way to the group and in moments, the new group of individuals was ready to take on their first challenge together, now they only had to figure out how to fight with one another.

Knowing his own role, Vivi stepped behind the two and brought his staff forward in front of him and held with vertically with both hands gripped tight around it.  Vivi's eyes closed as a small aura of light encased around him and he began to focus his mind and body in preparation for his future attacks.

Frantz ran to meet with the rest of the party as he looked up at the Zuu. Neither looked too damaged from the fall thankfully, but neither did the Zuu from the attacks so far. It seemed that this Mist also made the monsters stronger. Frantz continued to understand why this was such a bane to the people of this continent. Vivi's staff caught Frantz eye and remembered the power of the thunder spell before. Frantz released one of his hands from his spear and brought the blade in front of his body and ran his hand over the steel. The dragoon's magic flowed over the blade and caused the blade to glow red. He began running towards the Zuu, jumped into the air, and spun to slash the bird with his magic imbued spear leaving a vulnerability in his magic, “Hit him with your magic!”

  Chapter I: Memories of Mist

An ache throbbed through Erlein's body as he pulled himself upwards from the floor of the Pyrefly's cabin, which he had been thrown to on impact with the ground. Broken glass and debris from the cabin were strewn around him as Erlein stumbled through the door onto the deck of the airship which was in a state of utter destruction resting on the green cliff side of the mist continent.
” Shit. ” Was the only word he could muster as he serveyed the damage to his ship, his mind still in a haze as he staggered across the uneven wrecked deck towards the bow of the ship where he looked down on the greens below where both Vivi and Frantz had already began to engage the foe that had brought his ship down. ” Okay, I gotta get down there. ” Erlein was saying to himself as the Zuu began to whip the air up around them, the heat growing quickly before combusting in a wave of flame that circled around them in waves whipping the remains of the Pyrefly as well as the ground below.
