  Chapter II: The Crystalline Conundrum

A cool breeze danced through the rolling fields as Erlein and the others walked on, the lights of Treno shinning in the distance now illuminating the night sky. Erlein felt a sense of comfort as he looked onto his home, sensing that soon everything would be set right.
” I've never been so happy to see Treno before.” Erlein said to the others as he picked up his pace, making for the gates.
The plaza was bustling as ever when Erlein entered the city, citizens carrying on in boisterous conversations and gallivanting around the town. Erlein looked back at his two comrades as he stopped in the center of the entry plaza.
” I'm sure you know the way to Dr. Tot's place Vivi, I need to make a quick stop but will quickly catch up to you both.” Erlein said with excitement before bounding off to the right, through the iron gates towards the slummy side of town.

The battle was exhausting, it had been many weeks since Vivi had engaged in a battle of that magnitude and even then, they rarely saw creatures as massive as that.  Unfortunately, the party would not have much of a chance to relax and catch their breath, for the Pyrefly laid in ruins upon the ground, splinters of wood spread out all around it and various items cast aside.

It was a long walk, one that took a few hours by foot.  It was a somewhat comfortable pace, allowing them to recuperate as much as one can without being able to fully stop.  As the sun faded away and day turned to night, it weasn’t long before they began to see their destination.  For all the was started to go on upon the continent again, Treno seemed it’s usual busy self.  Lights shimmered throughout the night sky and the sounds of the hustle and bustle of the night life of Treno echoed throughout the surrounding area.

As the group walked through the gates into the bustling city, Erlein stated his intentions to momentarily leave the party and regroup with them at the house of Professor Tot.

”Mr. Frantz, I’m heading to the Professor’s house, you are welcome to follow me if you have no other plans.” Vivi exclaimed, unsure what if any business Frantz may or may not have within Treno.

It had been quite sometime since Vivi was last in Treno, he remembered all of the exciting adventures they had last time and their passage through the caverns. Vivi paused a moment and looked all around him, taking in the sights and sounds.  It was relaxing to see such normalcy.  In Alexandria everyone was still heavily helping rebuild the damage that Bahamut had caused, but the signs of battle didn’t exist here, it was like Treno had managed to escape it all.

With this new found vigor and resilience instilled in him, Vivi began the short trip to the Professor’s house.

During the battle, Frantz had felt he had not lost any of his battle prowess, but as the adrenaline rushed away he started to feel fatigue and weariness set in. His body was sluggish, but he did his best not to show how tired he was. Not having time to rest actually help the dragon knight. He could tell that he would be sore should he have not stretched by walking and would need to work his way up to jumping like he use to.

The city of Treno brought Frantz's mind away from the tiredness. Night seemed to fall quickly as they approached and Frantz got the impression that the city laid in a perpetual night. Frantz noticed that the town was designed very differently than the rest of the continent he had seen and immediately felt the unnerving feeling of paranoia creep up on him. Thought Frantz got the impression that his paranoia was well founded. Frantz wondered what a renown doctor was doing in such a town and even more so what business Erlein has here aside from him. He set the thought aside knowing it was just the survival part of his training telling him to be wary due to the shady feel of the town.

Frantz look to Vivi with relief that seemed apparent, “Please just call me Frantz.” Frantz responded with a warm smile, “This is my first time here so…heading right to Dr. Tot's may be for the best. Unless, there is something you feel I should see.” Frantz didn't want to risk missing something due to a negative impression he held of the area. It was possible that some of the shady characters he saw had gathered here due to something positive.

  Chapter II: The Crystalline Conundrum

The hustle and bustle that was the norm for a place like Treno calmed Erlein as he quickly moved along the raised stone walkway that twisted it's way over the slums towards the weapon merchant. Poking his head in the door Erlein gestured towards the man inside with a point from his index finger.
” So, The Pyrefly went down about twelve miles outside of town—” Erlein stared, still hanging his upper body casually through the doorway. ” I swear it wasn't my fault this time!” Erlein continued, speaking faster now. The man behind the counter looked up his eyes growing larger as Erlein spoke. ” Anyway I can't stay and chat, Later!” Erlein said with a grin before ducking back out of the door and slipping down the stairs into the lower part of town as quickly as he could.
Erlein moved quickly through the lower side of town, cutting through alleyways until he popped out next to the Tetra Master arena, he was almost to Dr. Tots tower. Sliding past a man in a brightly colored sewn frock Erlein climbed a set of stone stairs before catching sight of the others in the distance about to enter the Docter's abode.
” Hey guys wait up!” Erlein shouted across the night as he picked up his pace so he could rejoin the others as they arrived.

“Okay, Frantz,” Vivi acknowledged, making the correction to drop the Mr. from before his name, “We may be able to explore later, but Doctor Tot is the priority” Vivi stated.

The two walked through Treno, taking in the various sites. It was loud, it was busy and it was bright. Treno felt like a place that would never be brought down, somehow always avoiding the atrocities of the continent. It was this liveliness that calmed Vivi, for he knew much of the world was still recovered from the last event and he could only imagine what was going on now.

As they neared the Doctor’s house, a familiar voice called out to them. It seemed as if Erlein had completed what turned out to be a very quick detour and was able to meet back up with the group before they arrived at the Doctor’s place. Vivi stopped at the sound of his voice and turned his attention towards him and waited for him to finally catch up.

Frantz looked down at his new companion as they walked the streets of Treno together. For someone so short, Frantz admired the purpose that laid behind the way he moved and spoke. The streets of Treno hustled and bustled with the comings and goings of its citizens and visitors. Vivi showed no signs of being worried about the dark town, but Frantz wondered if he would even be able to tell if he was worried. The dragon knight waved for Erlein as the group approached the tower of Dr. Tots, “Hey, were you able to get everything done that you needed?” Frantz said with a raised eye brow wondering how he was able to get anything down in the time it took him and Vivi to get here since Vivi had taken them the direct route. “So what's this doctor's specialty?”

  Chapter II: The Crystalline Conundrum

Erlein stopped for a moment to catch his breath as he rejoined both Vivi and Frantz at the foot of the stone stairway that would lead up the tower to Dr. Tot's abode.
” Who Tot? he's a scholar or sorts, knows about as much as anyone about the history of our planet here, among other things.” Erlein replied to Frantz as he started up the stairs, the flicker of torch light casting dancing shadows as they climbed upwards towards the top of Tot's tower.
As the Erlein began to reach the top of the spiraling stone stairs the musty odor of old books slowly started to tickle is nostrils, the torches still illuminating their climb and casting dark silhouettes of their shapes as they moved upwards. Seeing the light of Tot's study Erlein motioned to the others as he reached the platform only to hear voices from the room ahead.
” Doctor, the return of the Mist to both this region and Bermacia is very troubling and is only made worse since none of us have heard from Zidane.” An unfamiliar voice spoke out, feminine but strong in resonance and timbre.
” Yes, yes. I'm afraid it's had me quite puzzled. It seems Kuja's promise that Terra's assimilation of Gaia could not be halted may have been true. I thought Zidane had surely been doing everything he could to stop the merging of our worlds but alas it seems something had happened to hi—” Dr. Tot was speaking now, his tone stark before he suddenly stopped noticing Erlein and the others. ” Who's that? come in come in!” Dr Tot called out to the group.

The group was reunited in front of Doctor Tot’s residence and just as soon as that was, they begin their trek inside as Erlein led them up the old and creaky steps.  Vivi’s eyes wandered around the room, the flicker of candle light providing a dim lighting through the residence.  Vivi would describe it as an organized mess, with papers and tools and trinkets scattered across desks, tables and shelves.  Books were nestled in an a somewhat orderly fashion around the room in floor to ceiling bookcases.

As the group all reached the top of the stairs, a familiar voice seemed to echo out into the ledge where they stood, looking out above the first floor.  That same voice seemed to share the same concerns that this group did and even Burmecia was mentioned, something Vivi knew that Frantz would be interested in hearing.  It didn’t take Vivi too long to recognize the voice as that of Freya, the Burmecian that travelled with the group after they met her in Lindblum during the Festival of the Hunt.  The shuffle of their footsteps was enough for Doctor Tot to hear them approaching and his voice called out to them.

”Doctor Tot, Freya!” Vivi exclaimed as he led the group into the study, with a little more pep in his step than he had since the journey started.  It was calming to see familiar faces, though the reason for their renunification made the moment a little more somber.

”We have travelled from Alexandria because of the reports of the Mist coming back, we even encountered a mighty Zuu, much bigger than the ones we previously faced on our journey.  I hope these are not ill tidings for Zidane’s own adventures.”  Vivi explained to Doctor Tot and Freya.

Frantz followed behind the group and took note on Dr. Tot's specialty and hoped he would have time to speak with him in private or look through his books, but judging by the importance of their mission he didn't think he would have a chance to do that now. Lost in his own thoughts, Frantz did not register the female voice until the group was before the doctor and Lady Freya. Frantz stiffened immediately and saluted, “Lady Freya!” He realized that his message might not have reached her due to her being here and not Burmecia, “I sent word to Burmecia after leaving Alexandria. Along with finding out about the Mist, it seems that Queen Garnet has gone missing as well.” Frantz could feel his adrenaline begin to pump again like in the battle, but this time the experience was not as welcoming. Instead he worried whether his choice to go with the party would be seen as wrong.

  Chapter II: The Crystalline Conundrum

” Why Erlein and Vivi no less! And, well I'm afraid I don't know you, but you come in esteemed company!” Dr. Tot greeted Erlein, Vivi and Frantz warmly, ushering them into his study where he and Freya had been speaking. ” Yes, the return of the mist is quite troubling Vivi. Freya and I were just discussing this matter at length and we seem to have both concluded that something has happened to Zidane, whatever it is he was doing to stall Garland's evil work seems to have come to a halt. ” The doctor's tone had shifted, worry present at the forefront of his voice, a trimble trickling through as he spoke Zidane's name.
” What!? That's impossible!” Erlein blurted out, feeling anxious at the thought that Zidane.. THE Zidane could have failed or was in serious peril.
” It seems that's the case. And with Garnet missing too… this has quickly become a mess. ” Freya replied, somber, looking over Frantz with intrigue as she spoke.
” We simply do not know enough to say for sure, but it seems that way. We just need more information, we must find out what is happening at the Iifa Tree.” Dr. Tot was thinking out loud now, his thumb and forefingers stroking at the hairs on his chin.
” Then we have to go to the Iifa Tree!” Erlein said with vigor, sensing that they would only know for sure the true nature of the returned mist until they had investigated it's source.

As the group entered entered the study, it did not take long before Dr. Tot and Freya had inundated them with a lot of information.  It was apparent how important this mission was and Vivi was glad that he had decided to tag along and it seemed that there was more to Erlein, for even Dr. Tot knew who he was.

It was crazy for Vivi to think that Zidane had failed in his mission for Vivi knew he would give everything he had in him to protect this world from Garland’s treachery.  It’s no wonder Garnet had left the castle, she must have sensed the same thing.  Vivi did agree on the next course of action, the Iifa Tree was of utmost importance and it could provide valuable clues as to what is going on.

”I agree,” Vivi stated, “the Iifa Tree could provide us with our next course of action.”

Frantz felt relief flow over his body as Freya did not seem angry that he had taken it upon himself to change his mission. Frantz was thrilled to hear that the group had an objective in mind as to where they should be going, but had never heard of this Iifa Tree even though everyone else did. He had studied maps of this continent since coming here to familiarize himself with the major landmarks, but had never come up with a map with the Iifa Tree. Again, Frantz was skeptical to ask about the tree as everyone seemed to know about it, “Let's go!” Frantz felt his mind to track his path out of this dark city, but realized they had nothing waiting outside the city the help them travel, “Dr Tot, by chance do you have a way for us to get there? Erlein's airship was attacked on the way here.” Frantz couldn't think of anything within walking distance that could be the Iifa Tree and was hoping it wasn't.

  Chapter II: The Crystalline Conundrum

Erlein seemed to shrink in size as Frantz asked Dr. Tot about possible transportation to the Iifa Tree, feeling the need to slink away and hide but knowing it to be impossible.
” The Pyrefly was damaged…again? Well that certainly complicates things…” The doctor replied to Frantz, eying Erlein in jest. ” You'll all have to head to Lindblum then and secure transportation directly to the Iifa Tree, Regent Cid will surely lend whatever support he can. ” Tot continued as he scanned each of his visitors. ” Lady Freya I assume you will be accompanying them? ” Tot asked as his gaze rested on the Bermecian.
” Of course, not only is the fate of Gaia in balance, but that of Zidane and Garnet as well.” Freya replied, somber and clearly deep in thought. ” We must hurry to Lindblum.” Freya continued, she was very matter of fact.
” But how will we get there without an airship?” Erlein finally chimed in.

The destination seemed to be set and a sense of purpose and direction was forming within Vivi.  However, just as quickly as it had formed it quickly dissipated when Frantz reminded the team that they were without transportation and journeying to Lindblum on foot would be quite a distance to travel.  Then, Vivi remembered the last time he was in Treno with Zidane and the crew.

”Is it possible that the Gargan Roo tunnels can get us there, or at least closer?”  Vivi posed to Dr. Tot, feeling as if anyone know, it would surely be him.

Frantz was thrilled to hear that Freya would be joining them. The party had showed they were formidable before when they faced the bird, but with Freya joining them their mission seemed far more attainable. “What is Gargan Roo?” Similar to the Iifa Tree, Frantz had no idea what Gargan Roo was, but judging by the way that neither Erlein or Freya had thought of it, it seemed that it may not be common knowledge to everyone. Either way, Frantz hope this journey to Lindblum would be a quick one without an airship crash.

  Chapter II: The Crystalline Conundrum

A cool draft moved through Tot's study as Erlein turned his head towards the Mage Vivi who had made his suggestion, the Gargan Roo tunnels, which had prompted Frantz to question the same thought that Erlein had been thinking.
” Yes yes, The Gargan Roo will get you to Lindblum in no time at all Vivi! Surely Regent Cid will greet you upon arrival and secure your passage to the Iifa Tree with much haste.” To replied, ignoring both Frantz's question and Erleins confused glances. ” We should head down now, time is of the essense. ” Tot continued as he moved through the small group of people towards the stairs, motioning for the others to follow him.
Erlein's legs ached as they seemed to finally reach the bottom of the seemingly endless spiral of stairs. The chamber they had entered was lit in torch light, the dancing flicker of flames framing their movements in shadows against the stone walls of the Gargan Roo tunnel. As far as Erlein could tell it looked like a platform, not unlike the lifts that were situated at many of the gates of the continents. He could only imagine what kind of transport could be kept down here. ” I'll summon the Gargan Roo. ” Tot said matter of factly as he moved towards a braided silk tassel which hung near the edge of the stone platform, pulling on it.
” So what exactly is a Gargan Roo?” Erlein repeated Frantz's question for moments earlier when he began to feel the vibrations.

The mention of the Gargan Roo caused obvious confusion amongst Frantz and Erlein, which was to be expected.  Seeing as the entrance to it laid below Dr. Tot's residence, it was not a well-known means of travel.  The group, now with Freya added to it, made their way down the long staircase and deep into the earth.  As they neared the tunnels, Vivi could feel the cool breeze created by the drafty tunnels.  As Dr. Tot called for the Gargan Roo, Vivi felt obligated to explain to the group what they were getting into.
” The Gargan Roo is a tunnel system created by the roots of the Iifa Tree, it will allow us to travel to Lindblum in a quicker and safer manner than walking up above,” Vivi explained, leaving out the bit about the creature, some things were worth waiting to be surprised by.

Frantz allowed his question to drop unanswered as it seemed the doctor wished to show rather than tell. The route to Gargan Roo was not very long and looking around Frantz could understand why the doctor didn't take time to explain. The platform seemed to be from a different era when compared to the town of Treno. It seemed Erlein was also confused by the platform and Vivi's explanation didn't help much. “Wait…how do we use roots to trav-” Frantz question was cut short as the platform began to vibrate. Instinctively, Frantz reached for his spear, but when he noticed that neither Doctor Tot nor Vivi moved to defend themselves it seemed this vibration was normal, or whatever normal is here.

  Chapter II: The Crystalline Conundrum

Erlein was met with the presence of a cool breeze being pulled through the tunnel just as he felt the first signs of the faint vibrations, which grew quickly in frequency. From the darkness the first thing he saw was the shimmering refraction of light from the gilded carriage which seemed at first to hang directly from the vines above. Then he saw it, the Gargan Roo itself, like a giant hairy bug, the carriage hanging from his back. His first instinct was to fight, but everyone else seemed at ease so Erlein calmed himself and waited as the carriage and Gargan stopped at the platform.
” Ah here it is, you should make it to Lindblum by day break. I will send word ahead of you via Mognet, surely Regent Cid will be expecting you when you arrive.” Tot said as he moved back towards the stairway, tipping his cap to the party as he walked.
” I guess we're riding this thing?” Erlein was asking no one in general as he moved towards the edge of the platform, grasping the metallic chains which connected the carriage to the back of the Gargan Roo, pulling himself in.

Quite a lot of time had passed since Vivi last rode upon the Gargan Roo.  He could still remember his own hesitation when he first rode the Gargan Roo with Zidane and the rest of the party.  At that time, Vivi still kept mostly to himself save for his conversations with Mr. Steiner.

With the Gargan Roo now pulling up, Vivi looked around and could see the intitial unease by both Erlein and Frantz, they looked as if they were ready to attack the poor creature.  However, without any words or interjection needed, the two seemed to calm down all on their own.  As the creature arrived, Dr. Tot informed the group that he would send word ahead to Regent Cid.

Erlein was the first of the group to board the Gargan Roo and Vivi followed him shortly afterwards.  As the group all boarded the Gargan Roo, Vivi turned towards Freya, his long lost companion that he had not seen in quite sometime.

”Freya, how has your quest been to rebuild Burmecia and how is Sir Fratley?” Vivi asked her.
