  Chapter V: Midnight Sun

Cloud took a deep breath, his arms reaching for the overhead handles used to brace ones self. Grasping tightly as the Shinra issue B1A Assualt Helicopter jolted up and down chaotically on it's z-axis. Cloud could feel his stomach jumping to his throught, he was terrified that the helicopter was going to go down in the harsh winds of the glacier sheets that stretched south towards the sea on the Northern Continent. Jerking his head right Cloud watched the snow packed ground come closer, the now horrid sound of sirens blaring through the cockpit. The near constant twilight this far north was unsettling, though at the moment Cloud was far more worried about crashing and going up in a ball of flames, thinking how ironic it would be to burn to death in a blizzard.
” I thought you said you knew how to fly one of these thing! ” Cloud shouted as his head jerked back left where Raiden was struggling with the helicopter's controls, no doubt because of the extreme winds, it seemed as if a blizzard was in the making. ” We're not even going to making it to this damn Icicle Village if you don't get a hold of this thing, do we need to set down and go the rest of the way on foot? ” Cloud yelled over the siren, his left hand now frantically hovering over several switches on the overhead controls, searching for the one which would turn of the siren. Turning back to look behind him, tugging on his harness Cloud looked at Tsuna, shrugging his shoulders as if to ask how he felt about going the rest of the way on foot, provided Raiden could land the thing without killing them all.

Raiden was practically in a panic. A cruel mixture of harsh northern weather, an insistent alarm, and a blonde who could wail like a banshee all worked in concert to make his life increasingly more difficult. If truth be told, a dark part of him considered intentionally crashing the helicopter just to quiet the noise. Not that he would ever truly do such a thing. Impossible as it might sound a big part of him enjoyed their travels, even though darker forces plagued their every step. “Why don't you fly the damn thing then?!” Raiden exclaimed angrily while desperately struggling to keep the helicopter from nose-diving. 'I really didn't expect the northern weather to be this volatile.' he thought as they were battered by yet another brutal gust of wind.

“Fuck, fuck, fuck!” Raiden spoke in rapid repetition as the helicopter was battered by the brute force of the winds. “I'm taking us down, brace yourselves!” Raiden started their descent while doing his best to keep their vehicle level as possible. Raiden couldn't say whether or not it was within his skillset to land the ship safely, but he knew well enough that they didn't stand a chance of reaching their destination in one piece by air. If they were to make an emergency landing, so to speak, he at least wanted to get the ship low as possible. At least that way they would have a chance at survival. If he were to somehow manage to land the ship safely though, it would be more a feat of luck than personal skill….

Tsuna's first helicopter ride would have been a wonder, even with all this life threatening chaos, but after Hojo's death CM-3 took no amusement. He braced himself throughout the flight spoke when necessary. With the death of Hojo, Tsuna was also dead. The cold calculating monster that ShinRa had created was no longer under control by Tsuna's need to show he had his dignity. CM-3 was free.

CM-3 look over at Cloud as he seemed to fear the helicopter ride. Cloud's shrug was met with a shrug of indifference. Even if CM-3 knew where Icicle Village was, he wouldn't be able to tell how far away they were. If they had to walk, then that's what they had to do. Extreme cold exposure was one of ShinRa's experiments and would bother CM-3 none.

  Chapter V: Midnight Sun

Cloud only nodded, realizing that the landing was probably going to be pretty rough. Bracing himself as the white sheet below grew nearer Cloud was shook violently as the helicopter struct the ground, skidding across the snow covered ground, burying itself up nearly to the doors. Cloud took a moment, his hands moving towards the harness that had kept him from being thrown out of the helicopter, grasping them and unlatching them in a quick motion. Looking outward, the blizzard was growing in strength, the visibility was low and the howl of the wind was intimidating.
” Based on our last check we are probably two or three miles from the village, it's near white out conditions so I suggest we stick very close together. ” Cloud said as he turned to Raiden and then Tsuna, wondering if the real gravity of the situation they were in had set in yet. It had only been twenty four hours sense their encounter in Midgar with Sephiroth and Genesis, though they never laid eyes on either there was no doubt that they were there. The Shinra man, Reeve, had pointed the to this place, where they could find the truth, Cloud longed for it. ” We should get moving before it gets worse. ” Cloud said after a pause, opening the helicopter door and exposing the party to the cold outside. The wind was harsh, even blowing through the layers of clothing he had put on not long ago, it was not going to be a pleasant trek.

“It's a relief that we've made it in one piece,” Raiden groaned in relief while turning off the helicopter's engines. Even if they weren't likely to return to it, he felt better leaving the option open. Once he was finished, Raiden carefully moved into the back of the helicoper, grabbing his equipment from the co-pilot's seat along the way. In a practiced motion he affixed his weapon to his belt, and pulled on a pair of gloves to keep his fingers warm. In addition to that he wore a scarf underneath a jacket with a fur-lined hood, which he pulled up over his head. Following that he pulled the scarf up over his mouth and nose, tightening it a bit to keep it that way. “It's hard to move in this,” he complained while folding his arms across one another; though he knew the winter wear was a necessity.

Once the door was open he stepped out of the vehicle first, the cold bite of the snowstorm tearing into him almost immediately. Even with everything he wore over his trademark suit it was still freezing, and they weren't likely to be out of this weather any time soon. “Let's hurry up; with our luck we'll be set upon by something really unpleasant if we stay here any longer.”

Cm-3 looked at the stark difference between himself and his comrades. They both bundled up to avoid the cold while CM-3 still worse his tattered suit that until 24 hours ago was always kept flawless. His long black hair hung ragged to his shoulders, the crosses that were embedded in his forehead showed, no longer hidden by his hat. The hat most likely lost forever withing Hojo's lab, where Tsuna lay as well.

After a quick inventory of his surroundings, which didn't take long due to the there being nothing there, CM-3 made his way towards Cloud. “I'll take rear.” CM-3 suspected that some animals may have adapted to these condititions no matter how odd it may seem. His blade remained in his hand as he waited for the group to move out, the sword with no sheath that had not left his hand since he had massacred the dead body of Hojo.

  Chapter V: Midnight Sun

The wind was strong, pushing against Cloud's body as he started to trudge forward through the snow, which he found was up to his knees. It was clear that a three mile walk, which would normally be pretty easy, considering the amount of ground they had covered since leaving Nibelheim, was going to be a challenge in itself.
” That would be our luck, who knows what could be living out here… hopefully a blizzard like this will keep most creatures away. ” Cloud shouted, turning his head back to see the others, hoping they could hear him. ” I'm just as worried about freezing to death as I am about encountering anything. ” Cloud continued blankly, seriously uncomfortable in the cold.
Turning forward again, the snow blowing hard into his face carried by the strong steady winds, Cloud moved forward more. In the distance the helicopter was no longer visible, the snow obscuring. Cloud felt uneasy, he would have to trust his instincts, trust himself, a difficult task. In the distance, the outline of a sharp wall of ice began to become clearer, the cool blue color visible in the midnight haze, what would be sun if not for the total obstruction of snow and clouds. Cloud knew it would get dark here sometime, for a couple hours at least, they needed to move.

As he trudged on the freezing winds stung his eyes, the only part of his body exposed to the biting cold, forcing him to lift his right arm up to provide what protection it could. Their journey to Icicle Village was sure to be a difficult one, and if the rough conditions grew much worse they would be forced to find shelter or risk their lives. “If the blizzard gets any worse we'll find shelter, whether you two like it or not!” Raiden called out at the top of his lungs, trying to make sure he could be heard over the roar of the storm. It wasn't a form of suggestion, but rather a command; if it came down to it he would force them to shelter. They would lose everything if they were to fail here; he wouldn't allow that, and he would give everything to hold the group together.

'They both lost a part of themselves at the tower.' Raiden was quick to remind himself, which served to bring his own questions to the surface. When they had met the man at the top of the tower there had been a flash of recognition in his eyes, as if he knew the former Turk, yet no matter how he tried Raiden hadn't been able to recall the dying man's name. 'I feel I've lost something precious. I should have known him, I know that, yet why…?' As the darkness continued to grow a large wall of ice became visible, inspiring him with a momentary feeling of awe before he refocused upon their present predicament. “Tsuna, are you sure that you'll be alright in that? It's fuckin' cold!”

CM-3 kept moving his head around his should as in this snow it was too difficult to walk backwards. The command from Raiden rubbed him the wrong way, “What you gonna do, build us an igloo?” Not even Tsuna liked commands, CM-3 hated them more. As his head moved to his front, his saw his allies shivering. For once, CM-3 appreciated the training, if only for a moment, “Yea. Why? It's not that cold.” Tsuna, coming out shortly, shot Raiden a sly smile.

  Chapter V: Midnight Sun

As they drew nearer the towering wall of glacier ice loomed overheard, now serving a wall against the wind and snow, giving Cloud and the others reprieve from the storm that raged around them. The cool blue ice seemed two maybe even three hundred feet tall, and they were going to have to climb it. Looking at the others Cloud seemed dismayed, in his mind he was not concentrating on the task at had, but rather replaying the events in Midgar over and over in his head.
” Maybe we should find shelter until this blizzard slows down a bit, the winds could shift and we'd be screwed. ” Cloud spoke up after staring off into the unknown for several minutes, shaking the negative thoughts from his head. ” There seem to be several deep niches at the base of this wall, I'm sure we could hole up in one for a few hours. ” Cloud continued as he raised his hand and started to move it parallel to the wall, finger extended pointing at the niches. He was unsure how the others would respond, they were all affected and distant, perhaps more time to think about what had happened was not the right move, but the only other choice could be suicide.

It wasn't long before Cloud suggested that they take shelter, though Raiden wasn't keen on the idea of doing so in one of the crags in the ice. “I'd rather not if we can avoid it. I much prefer the idea that Tsuna so brilliantly offered some time ago.” Raiden announced with a shout, moving away from the wall. With a deep breath he began to focus solely upon a singular concept in his mind. Even with his bangle beneath several layers of clothing a powerful green glow could be seen, and the earth in front of him began to quake lightly. Shortly after the ground erupted from beneath the snow, in the form of what could only be described as a crude igloo, large enough for all of them to take shelter in. “Huh, I'll be damned. It's a fuckin' igloo.”

Tsuna coming out was a matter of survival and so he did, “Always knew I was brilliant.” Tsuna smiled again at Raiden as he made his way into the igloo, his hand moving to his head to move his to get into the igloo where it found nothing. Just like that, CM-3 was back and the look of nuetrality came back. Tsuna couldn't exist without his hat so he didn't. Thankfully, since Tsuna had set context, CM-3 didn't have to go back out there to save face. It may not have killed him, but it sure was more comfortable in the igloo.

  Chapter V: Midnight Sun

In the shadow of the wall of glacier ice it became clear to Cloud and the others that if they were going to make it to Icicle Village they would have to seek some kind of shelter and wait out the storm. Amazed by Raiden's idea, raising a earth igloo of sorts from the hard packed tundra with his earth materia, Cloud did not hesitate to enter and get out of the wind and elements. While the interior of the igloo was not exactly warm by normal standards it would do to keep the alive though the rest of the night. Darkness came quick, and it seemed to depart almost as quickly. Snapping away after dozing for the duration Cloud stood and took a moment to check outside.
” The storm seems to have passed. ” Said to himself, loud enough for the others to hear as well if they were awake. Looking out at the massive cliff Cloud's eyes shifted along the ridge until stopping, a cabin was visible in the distance, at the top of the wall of ice. Smoke bellowed from a towering stone chimney. ” Well, look at that. ” Cloud mumbled as he went to check on the others.

The cabin was a far cry from her plush apartment back in Midgar but it was just how she liked it: isolated and simple. She surrounded herself with luxurious things to give off a persona of selfishness and being ostentatious, when really she only relied on the most basic of needs. The old, black aga had warmed the cabin nicely, along with the saucepan of carrot and gysahl green soup on the hob, which she gently stirred.
In the lone room was a sofa, a table with just a few chairs, the aga, a counter with a separate sink unit beside it and then a small staircase leading up to an open expanse that only just managed to fit a double bed. A door on the side led to a small bathroom with a toilet and shower unit inside. It was all the Snow needed, and really all she wanted, too. The storm outside had settled to a gentle breeze but had not once hazed her at all. Stoicism was a trademark for people like her and fear was almost never allowed to exist in her mind.

Raiden just barely managed to stifle a laugh at the remark, glad to find that their friend wasn't completely lost to them. 'Maybe he just needs time.' he mused upon entering the igloo, moving to the far wall and lying down against it. Even if this place was far from comfortable it would at least serve to keep them alive until the snowstorm had passed them by. Now that he had the chance to rest his eyes slowly began to droop, until he drifted off to sleep. Once more he dreamt of the night they had fled Nibelheim, the images terrifyingly vivid. Then the scenery started to change and he was within Shinra Mansion, before the fire had consumed it. In front of him was the humanoid monster they encountered within the tower, simply staring at him until suddenly it began to mutate.
Raiden woke up in a panic, his heart beating so hard he thought it might burst from his chest. As the realization that it had merely been a dream set in he began to calm down, though he couldn't shake the dreaful feeling that had overwhelmed him. 'What the hell was that…?' Raiden thought as he curled up, that final image still fresh in his mind. In the end that thing had become him. Why did such a ridiculous nightmare frighten him so much? “Fuck.” he groaned as he made his way out of the igloo to join up with Cloud. No sense in dwelling on dreams when they had more serious matters to attend to….

CM-3 sat at the back of the igloo like Raiden, keeping his back to a wall and being able to see the entrance. He had not slept much since the Hojo incident and with a sheathe for his blade it always stayed in his hand. That was the not the only reason he kept it in his hand, CM-3 was always ready for an attack. It was Tsuna that was calm.

CM-3's master die glowed red as Raiden slept. He pulled out the die to inspect it and watched as Raiden seemed to have a nightmare. The red creature seemed to be doing something to the die, but CM-3 was sure yet. As Raiden awoke, CM-3 put the die away so he wouldn't see, the glow going away and followed him outside where Cloud found a cabin. The wall was a little overwhelming, but not something that couldn't be beaten.

  Chapter V: Midnight Sun

Cloud gazed up at the wall of jagged ice, the edge of a glacier that was solid, no melt at all. It looked to be nearly two hundred feet to the top and Cloud knew that to reach the cabin, and of course Icicle Village beyond they would have to climb it. Stepping farther out into the cold Cloud looked around to make sure there was no visibly easier way to reach the top of the glacier, a sunken feeling hitting him when he did not.
” Guys, we're going to have to climb this thing. ” Cloud said, his tone expressing a disdain for the events that were about to transpire. ” The face seems pretty jagged, there are logs to hang and foot holds, and it's not warm enough for any of the ice to melt so it should be sturdy enough. ” Cloud continued to speak, not exactly sure that his words were true, hoping mostly to reassure himself and the others that it could be done.
His words spoken Cloud started towards the glacier cliff, taking large wide steps in the deep snow which passed his knees. He didn't look back at the others, his eyes instead focused on finding the best spot to start the climb.

Snow walked over to the window, the warmth from her bowl of soup gently heating her hands. She loved the peace and quiet of being in Icicle Village and wanted it to be endless. However, she was here for only a short while before she knew she had to get on with more serious matters. Finding her sister was not going to be an easy feat. Avelia had been difficult to track ever since she had joined ShinRa several months ago. She had become a stranger to her family. Snow was determined to bring her home, aware of the evil that ShinRa was, and then live out the rest of her life in peace and happiness.
It was a far cry before she could even consider retiring. The money that came with every assignment was great but it still was not enough to keep her happy. Money meant security and she would need a lot of it if she wished to play out the rest of her life in safety, without threat from anybody. She finished her soup and quickly washed it in the sink before blowing out the candles that dimly lit the room. Plunging into darkness, she headed up the stairs, a perfect map formed in her mind from memory to ensure she did not miss a step. Once finding the bed, she slipped off her clothes and climbed under the sheets, resting her head on the pillow and closing her heavy eyes.

As he listened to Cloud explain that they would have to climb the ice wall he groaned in frustration. While it would appear to be their own route forward there wasn't a doubt in his mind that it wouldn't be an easy journey to the summit. With a sigh he reached up and lowered his fur-tipped hood, then pulled down the portion of his scarf that covered his face. Immediately afterwards he inhaled deeply, taking the chance to bask in the fresh mountain air. There was a powerful chill to it, which stung at the inside of his nose, but he was glad for it all the same. Raiden reached for the hilt of his weapon and let his right hand rest upon it, feeling a small measure of comfort from its presence. Just ahead of them was a task that was quite dangerous, and anything he could do to calm his nerves would be welcome.
“It'll work out just fine, Cloud. Hell, I'll bet Tsuna would carry us both to safety if it comes down to it.” Raiden encouraged his friend with a casual grin, and set off after Cloud as he started toward the glacier. Raiden was careful to trail behind Cloud through the deep snow, making his own passage through it that much easier. No sense in wearing himself out when they had such a daunting challenge awaiting them.

With the revelation that climbing was the only choice set in, CM-3 almost caught himself smiling. It was a physical challenge to get out some of his pent up anger, a nice break from riding in helicopters and walking. He then tried to feign a smile as Raiden commented on him climbing them up, “You're probably right.” Tsuna would have done anything to stay with his friends, CM-3 liked them around because they were strong and had information he didn't.

With his sword in his right hand, CM-3 began to climb the ice wall. His left hand held onto whatever he could and his right use the sword for leverage. The climb air felt good as he climbed and the sensation of a similar wind from his past flittered throught then was on its way. Unlike Tsuna, CM-3 didn't care much for where he came from, just where he was going and for now it was the top of this ice wall.
