So this is a take on a thread you see all over the place, however with more discussion! The idea being, post up the last movie you watched along with a 1-10 score and a little bit of info about why you felt that way about it, then we can discuss said film.

I'll get it started.

Into the Wild (2007) ›› ( 8.0/10 )

I had wanted to watch this when it frirst came out, there was a lot of buzz around it but it was lost in my backlog. They recently added it to Netflix so I finally gave it a watch over the weekend. It was an interesting story, a character study more than anything. The disjointed narrative was a nice touch. It was a nice film.

Originally my thoughts were to give this film an 8. The story was timeless with a great switchup that ( if you don't read the plot synopsis on wiki ) made this movie very original and somewhat disturbing if you really delve into the meanings behind the film. It's very light hearted and comedic at the same time of a horror film which they do well. I only put it down one because of the ending. Watch the movie and you'll see why.

Honestly, I watched that late last year and found it to be pretty eh. I know there was a lot of talk about it bing original and all that jazz but I thought it was pretty bad. I think I already had this talk with Fevian lol, he was the one talking it up that made me consider watching it.

I never said it was original. It's the fact that's unoriginal that makes it great. An allegory about the horror movie genre written in the horror movie genre. What's not to like?

You're just a curmudgeonly old man is all. :P   Anywhoooo…

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) - Let me start by saying that I'm not really a fan of Star Trek. I enjoy The Next Generation and some of the movies, including J.J. Abram's 2009 Star Trek, but I haven't really watched a lot of the old Shatner episodes or films. Given that, I can't really say how I'd feel about Into Darkness if I was really a fan. There are some in jokes that I got, others that I probably missed. And I'm sure there are things that a true Trekkie would dislike. Again, I am not one, so I actually enjoyed this movie for the most part. Acting, direction, SFX are all great. The plot does, however, have some holes. Sometimes, things get a little silly. But that didn't really stop me from enjoying THE FIRST HALF. That being said, the movie starts to take a turn about an hour-fifteen in. In particular, the last fifteen to the thirty minutes are pretty dumb and full of clichés. It desperately grabs for anything it can, but ultimately falls short, producing a random series of unnecessary sequences that make you sort of shake your head. Still, for a CGI-driven science fiction/action film, it's pretty entertaining, and the last part didn't bother me enough to destroy the film entirely. Also, Benedict Cumberbatch. ( 7.0/10 )

It's apparently not doing quite as well at the box office as was expected, though iit still may pull out $100 million in it's 4 day opening run (strong numbers from today and tomorrow are a must for this, seems unlikely). Numbers from Thursday and Friday were pretty far off the expectation though.

Yeah, I saw that it only had $22 million last night. It'll make back the budget overseas though. I think it'll end up making around $200 million before it gets pulled from theaters.

I dunno man, the last one didn't really do that well over seas. Star Trek isn't traditionally a strong worldwide brand. It will surely still get like $80 million four day, but I had seen that the studio was estimating $100-$110 million or something, so clearly they were wrong. Even if it doubles it's foriegn haul from the last one, which it probably will do, it's going to have trouble recouping that budget.

It made $84m in the four day domestic and $116m worldwide. I think it can make another $84m worldwide before it leaves theaters.

That won't cover it though. The general rule of thumb is Production Budget x2 (to account for advertising budget, which is generally about the same as the production budget, though this can vary. With major films like this one, sometimes it's more) Which is why It's going to have a tough time being profitable. That being said, in the long run it should be since they will make a good sum on Blu-Ray/DVD sales (with a movie like this you can usually expect anywhere between $50-100 millon in that area) and licensing to networks (like HBO, etc).

Still from what I see it looks like unless it has a strong hold next weekend and boosts it's numbers over seas that it will have a hard time being super profitable (Like Iron man for instance) and might find a 3rd entry less likely of happening.

Also I watched a couple movies this weekend myself.

Slaughterhouse-Five (1972) ›› ( 8.0/10 )

Kurt Vonnegut is an author I'm pretty fond of, and while this film didn't exactly capture the meaningfulness of the novel it's based on it was still pretty damn good. I was unsure how the non-linear narrative structure would transition to the big screen, but it worked. A really nice film.

True Confessions (1981) ›› ( 6.6/10 )
I've been eyeing this one since it was added to netflix (I mean Robert Duvall + Robert De Niro in a hard boiled LA murder case, how could that not be awesome?) Well it wasn't as awesome as I had hoped, as less emphasis was put in the hard boiled crime part (I was looking for something like Chinatown out of this, which it was not) and more on the two brothers moral gray areas, with one being a cop (Duvall) and the other a prominent priest (De Niro). Still it was a solid film, and it seems like a lot of the ideas for this film got jacked by Rockstar for LA Noire….

The beginning started off slow and then got kind've messed up at certain points.. but ofcourse this is nothing compared to what goes on later lol. Honestly the segments are all very messed up, one of them being kind've dumber but still crazy. I got scared not gonna lie lol.. it's all found footage type stuff so if thats not your thing you might not like it.. however don't just not check it out. It truly is scary as shit and goes from being fun to fucked up in the most brutal of ways in an instant. FREAKY MOVIE!!

The Hangover Part III - Very quick overview here. Pretty much what I expected. They went away from the formula of the first two and did something else. Really, it was more of an action-comedy than anything. It was okay. Not as memorable as the first two, but pretty consistently funny. Still, there were some things that weren't that great (as expected). Despite that, I sorta like how they ended it all, though moreso in theory than execution. 6.0/10

Yeah, this one might be a little better than the second one, but it doesn't have as many memorable lines/moments in my eyes. But, then again, I don't really care about that much in the first place.

A couple more movies to add from the weekend.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) ›› ( 6.2/10 )

For a guy who really likes Steve Martin and doesn't mind John Candy, somehow I had never actually seen more than 10 minutes of this movie in passing. I decided to give it a full watch and it was pretty good, what you'd expect out of this kind of this. Steve Martin was in top form, John Candy is better in other things. It's on the high end of 80s comedies, so a 6.2 is actually a pretty good score for what this is.

The Dictator (2012) ›› ( 4.3/10 )

To start off I have to say, I really love Borat, that movie is one of the funniest things ever put on the big screen. This however, is not. In fact this is a pretty terrible movie that luckily is only like and hour and twenty minutes long. Also.. Seriously Ben Kingsley? You're a fucking great actor why are you in this?

Pretty much my feelings on The Dictator. Only part I really though was funny was the “splish splash, takin' a bath” part.

I don't remember laughing at all, so I much have found it all not funny. I'm pretty sure the only reason I didn't turn it off was I was playing DQV at the same time.
