  Dungeon: The Lair Ruins

” Uuugggh ” The bandit leader exclaimed with a groan as he was struck in his side causing him to stagger slightly to his right due to the force of the blow.
Rafe watched the movements of both fighters intently, seeing that Haseo had left him a safe opening. With the same quickness as before Rafe pounced like a jungle cat, darting forward and arcing his sword down towards the backside of the bandit leader. He smirked as he moved but his expression was quickly lost as the bandit leader's short sword whipped around to parry his strike.
” Yeah, real quick. ” Rafe uttered to himself again, revisiting the point he had made earlier.
Leaping back Rafe moved to his left—the fallen leaves of the grov's trees crackling under his feet—and moved to his left out of the way of any possible strike. Now he simply waited, seeing that Haseo had a clean strike at the badnit's prone left side, wondering if he could get his defense up in time to deflect another blow.

A click resounded after the scythe staff hit the leader, the clamps keeping the separete pieces together released with the push of a button from Haseo. A weapon like this wouldn't work against someone so fast, it was generally just to pick off the trash. Clamping the folded weapon onto his back, his empty head was then filled by another of his hand axes. “What a waste of time” Haseo muttered under his breath, with this guy's fighting style there's no way he had the greatsword.

It seemed to Haseo that this Rafe had a good eye for oppurtunity and as he backed off, Haseo charged. His back low, axes out from his body then bearing both blades from different angles, making it difficult for someone even with his speed to deflect.

Rafe grimaced as the axes both found their targets, feeling a ting of pain rush up his own back as he imagined the pain that the bandit leader would surely feel. The fair haired adventurer watched as the bandit leader fell to his knees, his hands both reaching for wounds. A gust of cool spring wind danced through the grove, it brought smells from the rolling hilly plains outside.
” I think that we've dealt with these bandits now. ” Rafe uttered, his mind already turning back to the cavern entrance behind him and the treasures it may contain. ” I still intend to check the hideout; that is why I'm here after all. ” Rafe continued as the thumbed to the entrance which lay at his back some twenty meters.

Haseo walked over towards the bandit to look at his face, impassionate about all he was going through, “Your dying, we both know this. No healer will be healing you, instead you die here. Now, I said I wasn't going to ask again, so answer my question and it will be quick.” Haseo clipped both his handaxes to his hips, “Don't and we leave you here with a little parting gift making sure no healer can help.” Haseo was too engrossed with his own vengeful journey to remember Rafi was there. He wasn't a bad person, but had too much hate for any bandits to see right from wrong. They were leeches on society, taking what other people work to earn and sometimes you just gotta burn a leech.

Rafe took a step back towards the opening of the ruins, feeling that his new found ally and the bandit leader had something to hash out. He could feel the tension in Haseo, this desire for knowledge and hatred of bandits. Rafe wondered where it stemmed from but knew that now was not the time to delve into those things.
” Let me die then. ” The bandit's words reverberated though the clearing, and moreso through Rafe's own being. They were meaningful words, they meant the bandit would tell Haseo nothing of what he asked.
” You heard him. ” Rafe decided to chime in, hoping to end this standoff and make headway into the lair.

A long sigh escaped his lips as Haseo look down on the bandit. “So be it.” His right hand reached for his lower back which grabbed his scythe and extended it out. A quick series slash across the bandit's cheek caused blood to run down his face. “You're marked now. Should we cross paths again I'll know it and you will never forget the name, Haseo.” Walking towards the ruins, Haseo knew not even the best healers would be able to heal the “H” shaped wound completely and some scar would remain. Even with all his hatred, he stopped dropping to their level and killing in cold blood. The last wound wouldn't attribute much to the wounds in battle so he could live with himself. Nodding to Rafe, words escaping him at the moment, Haseo plunged into the hideout.

Rafe turned his head from Haseo as he pulled his weapon free, expecting the worst. The brush under his feet crunched as he moved towards the cavernous entrance that was naturally exposed in the upward slope at the end of the wooded grove. He resisted looking back and instead chose to plunge head first into the unknown darkness of the lair. Light from outside filtered it's way in several meters and as his eyes adjusted to the lower light he could just make out the warm flicker of fire light in the distance. Rafe instinctively moved his right arm to the rough rock wall, feeling all of it's imperfections as he moved deeper into the hideout.
” There's light up ahead, might be best to be on guard. ” Rafe found himself speaking aloud, feeling the presence of Haseo behind him.
The flicking torch light grew stronger with each step, revealing a slight curve in the path. Rafe followed as the tunnel opened into a larger chamber which at first appeared natural but quickly proved to be somewhat altered. The chamber sported the same rough walls—the fire light casting shadows that danced about the ceiling, dipping into all of the small crevasses— though it had obviously been worked into a nearly dome like form. Along each wall two torches lit the room, which was cluttered in the center with the bandit's goods. Three bedrolls were laid out haphazardly, ruffled and unkept. Around them clothing and trash were scatted, the bones of small creatures picked clean among them. At the far end of the chamber a dark passage way was unlit, though some light dared illuminate it's mouth.

Haseo stayed quiet as they moved through the passage way. His impulse to kill the bandit had almost gotten to him, but his noble father came into his mind's eye, stopping him. That anger had caused him to make many bad decisions before and almost a new one. He could tell Rafe frowned on what he did, but hopefully he knew the truth of his actions over his words. With the leader outside, Haseo kept his hands free, but aware in these small corridors only his axes would help him.

The chamber showed the bandit hideout to be more of a hovel,
“Bandits may not be our worry now.” The three bedrolls showed the true number of people here as Haseo sat down and began going through their previous possessions, looking for things of worth and any hints to his family's greatsword, “Though it's concerning that it continues one. Why did they not continue on? With lookouts outside and men further in, this would have been a better ambush spot than outside.” Haseo voiced his thoughts outloud as he puzzled over them. Monsters? Possibly. Something keeping them there, but how certain was the setup? Who could sleep in a cave comfortably with an open passage for monsters? It mattered little to Haseo now, he would find out eventually.

” There doesn't appear to be anything of value in here. ” Rafe said rather matter-of-factly as Haseo entered the domed chamber a few steps behind him—reaching with the tip of his blade to turn one of the tattered bedrolls.
The young man's attention quickly moved from the littered strewn about the cavern floor to the dark opening on the far wall. He could tell the rock wall was worked much like that of the chamber in which they now stood. There was no doubt in his mind that the tunnel would lead into a dungeon proper.
” Maybe they haven't been here that long? Perhaps just enough time time to have a small presence in town. ” Rafe attempted to answer Haseo's wonderings. ” Let's keep moving. ” he finished speaking, as he moved across the chamber towards the torches which hung from the wall, pulling one from it's mooring before starting towards the tunnel that lead deeper into the ruins.

Haseo nodded accepting that other possibility as well. This would have made an excellent ambush spot, but then again no one said bandits were smart. After finding nothing he cared to carry, Haseo grabbed one of the torches off the way, “Let's hope this wasn't all the good stuff,” and headed further into the hideout.

The shadows cast by the torch penetrated the darkness, illuminating the roughly hewn rock tunnel that twisted and turned its way downward with each additional step. Rafe moved at a steady pace, his eyes following the rough walls as far as the torchlight would allow them, unaware what could lie in the darkness just beyond the lights reach.
” I think this tunnel is about to widen some. ” Rafe found himself projecting behind him, listening intently to the way the sounds of his footsteps traveled through the caverns, feeling the sound grow bigger as he reached the entrance to a large chamber completely cast in darkness.
The young man took a few cautionary steps from the relative safety of the tunnel into the open chamber, his light casting it in damp shadows. On the walls he found evenly spaced torches and assuming that his new found companion had also brought his own light source moved to one side of the chamber to begin lighting the torches.
” Seems pretty big, I'll get these you get those. ” He said as the chamber began to become lit.

Grabbing a torch of his own, Haseo followed behind Rafe while keeping an eye behind them. There was always a chance that the bandits had others out and could return. “Let's hope so. No knowing whats out there.” Haseo spoke to reduce any chance of echoing in these seeming empty caverns.

Spreading out as the cavern widened into what could be seen as a decent room with area to move around. Nodding at he took the other side of the room and began lighting torches with his own.
“What have you heard what about this place use to be?” Haseo lit another torch, “Most of what I gathered was about the guys we met before and very little about this place's history.” Haseo lit the final torch and looked at Rafe, “Any stories or note?”

” I haven't heard much honestly. I did some inquiring around Farebury in regards to places like this. You know the usual spots, the tavern, a few of the shops. ” Rafe replied as he finished lighting the torches that encircled the large cave, his voice echoing loudly as the acoustics of the chamber created great resonance.
Rafe grew quiet as he took in the chamber in full light, quickly noticing that there were no other exits, at least none that made themselves obvious. This was a good sign. The room itself was encircled by rough unhewn stone, as you would expect to find in a mine or something similar. In the center a small stone platform was elevated a foot from the rocky ground. The platform was smooth and perfectly square, Rafe judged six feet per side. In each corner of the platform the cardinal directions had been carved. The remainder of the room was empty, aside from a few clay pots and the remains of what was once a wooden crate, now splintered and scattered about the room.
” Well this is interesting. ” Rafe said as he walked towards the center of the chamber.

Haseo put his own torch out on the adjacent wall as the room filled with light from the ones on the wall. Stepping closer to the platform, Haseo looked in bewilderment, “Why would someone need to know the direction points in here?” Hinting that he thought there could be more here than meets the eye. Placing his hands gingerly on the sides, Haseo tried to rotate the sides as he examained one of the sides, “Do these points line up right?” Coming through the cavern and without the sun as an easy guide, Haseo would need to take a moment to back track to figure it out, but he would take time from simply seeing what was in front of him.

Rafe leaned in close as he made a full circle around the raised stone platform, his boots kicking up age old dust and dirt into a light cloud which refracted the torch light, looking like light snow fall in the dimness of the cavern.
” What did you say? ”Rafe asked rhetorically as he wrapped his mind around Haseo's comment.
Instinctively Rafe's hands were already digging into his satchel, pulling forth the neatly folded paper map which he had acquired in Farebury as well as his compass.
” You're on to something there fella, This thing is inverted. What do you think that means? ” He spoke up as he studied the cardinal points from his compass, map, and the platform in the room.

Haseo paused in thought. The platform pointed in and wrong direction, yet did not move. Standing up, Haseo ran his fingers over the top of the platform, trying to see if there was any variations, “The platform doesn't seem to move, so putting the directions right now that was is our of the question.” Taking his hands off the platform, Haseo moved towards where the platform's north pointed and examined examined the wall more closely, “Maybe where they point will give us some clue.” Haseo moved towards where east pointed hoping for some clues.

Rafe listened to and watched Haseo intently as he examined the platform, taking special care to follow his newfound allies hands as he touched and pushed on the platform. After a few moments he had come to the same conclusion as Haseo, the platform itself was not going to manipulate the room in anyway.
” That's exactly what I was thinking. ”Raphael replied as he followed Haseo a few steps towards the wall marked north, though it actually lead south.
Moving the torch close to the hewn rock wall Rafe attempted to light the area as best as possible as Haseo moved allow the area when a faint hairline jumped out at him, he knew instantly there was some kind of passageway hidden here.
” Look, this is excellent workmanship but if you lean in close you can make out the line of the door, we just have to figure out how to open this thing. ” He finished.
