FF8 is probably my favorite in the series, I hold 7 and 9 right there with it but I'm just a little more fond of 8. I love the junction system and the freedom it gives you to develop the characters the way you see fit, I think the main story is actually very underated and it has a ton of depth to it and a lot to say, and the localization is killer. I would argue that FF8 has the best soundtrack of any FF game, with 9 and 7 following and then 10 and 6. Like you said the art direction is killer as well, some of the locations are just so well done and there is a lot of variety in the design of the world. I see the things that people don't like about the game and understand why they don't, but I just think a lot of them were waiting for FF7-2 and that's not what they got, which is what the Final Fantasy series is so great because to redically depart in formula from a 10 million seller and risk alienating all those new fans was risky but they did it anyway.

So the remaster is going to just upres the game and re-do the HUD in HD quality, or is it actually a remaster completely? Interestingly enough, I kind of place 7 and 8 on even terms BUT… I actually thought the Junction system was far more badass. I’m not fond of the plot or characters, although I did like the world, music, and art direction overall.
I place it above 7’s customization because it very open-ended thanks to the card game, if you want to break it early you have the freedom to. I’m also a fan of FF2’s as you may know because of how it can also be broken and seems a little more realistic in its leveling system. I’m big on systems you can break at almost any point early on in games.

I did really like that you could save some gambit presets in the FFXII remaster, that definitely saves some time when you're swaping between your grind presets which are setup to chain/steal or your more traditional combat ones. Considering you really have to use the gambit system in order to get through some of the boss fights in that game, it helps.

I'm sorta wondering now when we'll get the next big content show off for FF7R. Tokyo Game Show is in September and it seems likely they will probably have a big presence there. Wondering when this year we are going to get that FF8 remaster as well, I'm seriously pumped for that one having replaying most all the modern FFs in the last 2-3 years besides it.

I’m not exactly comparing predecessors like KH2 and KH, but that it’s just out right awful in balancing its control scheme. It wants to be a barebones ATB system plus added real-time movement without compensating for the lack of camera/lock-on control (in more difficult game modes it makes all the difference). As I said, BBS supplemented the DPad cycling with direct button mapping of commands. The point isn’t Crisis Core has limited combat mechanics, but that the hardware it is on might force them to think about the basics they’d want to implement from previous experience in bigger games like KH for example. From there, they’d fine tune it to be functional. Seemed to work out well, just wasn’t a fan of DMW.
The idea to take away from all this is giving players more customization via pause menus to relieve some of the controls and fumbling during battle. That’s what makes 12 so great, adding to the recent Zodiac release are save/load Gambit presets. These are the kinds of solutions streamlining repetitive, mundane processes in RPGs.

Agreed that FFXII is the best we've seen of this style combat, and the gambit system to handle what your AI companions are doing should be something that all these FFs with AI party members have, or KH for that matter too. I disagree about KH2's combat though, I thought it was pretty good a giant leap from what KH was (most of my issues here stem from the really bad camera which was definitely improved upon in KH2). As for Crisis Core I wouldn't say it's limited, I like the way Materia worked in the game to give you abilities (very much like how you would equip abilities in KH), actually I like the Materia system in that game a lot more then I thought I would, you can definitely customize and merge you bonuses into some pretty great stat boosts. I'm not 100% sure but I think the same guy was also responsible for the original Dissidia on the PSP as well, which I also really liked overall.

KH2 is definitely bad when it comes to action combat. Its action combat miserably tried to combined D-Pad navigation through menus in real-time (and any sub-menus therein) with little supplement (shortcuts) ultimately falling short ergonomically. FF7R is shaping up to rectify it all: takes the classic FF ATB Wait mode (which is essentially “Tactical” mode once you have one ATB gauge filled) with added real-time movement, basic action commands to expedite the gauge fill, and instant character switching. This is the proper way to execute KH’s combat without sacrificing control and strategy. And it still retains shortcut commands for quick queuing of commands. In some ways, it’s identical to Parasite Eve’s system, but a more elaborate and evolved form clearly.
BbS was excellent, Crisis Core did better with controls than KH2 (but obviously there’s less to work with on its platform of release so consider that). FF12 is the king of this variant compared to all the rest really.

Well yeah, this isn't a revolutionary battle system or anything, they have definitely been trending this way for awhile though, since the first Kingdom Hearts. There have been a lot of iterations and improvements that have lead to what we saw in the E3 demo, but if it's as tight as the people that have played the demo say that's great news. Let's be honest, more often or not Square's real time action combat systems, with ATB gauges or not, have been hit or miss over the years. There are some that worked alright, KH2 wasn't bad, Crisis Core isn't bad, and even FFXV isn't bad. I'd say FFXII is the best of that bunch, but that's probably because it leans more towards the Turn based/timed actions where as most of the others suffered from camera issues. I do like that you can slow it down if you want, I want to get my hands on it myself.

One thing I will say is when Kitase introduces a new battle system (or rather modified ATB) they hype it up way too much. These are modifications that fans have pretty much been shouting for years as fixes and fine tuning to the ATB variants.
The guy that designed the combat system for the FF7 Remake is the same guy that did the combat for KH2 and the reason he didn't do KH3 is because he was working on FF7R. I'm still holding on to some hope that this guard scorpion demo hits PSN at some point.

I agree that it will probably end right after the motorcycle chase fleeing Shinra HQ with the prospect of a wide world to explore. That is one of the best moments of the original, and it sets up that amazing second part of disc one where you are on Sephiroth's trail. The mood and atmosphere of that part of the game are part of what makes FF7 so great, with that Nibelheim flashback in Kalm setting it all up. I can't see them ending the game against Motorball as the last boss though, I wonder how they change that up?

I'm definitely interested in getting out into Midgar and exploring though, and I hope we get some Turks side content that expands on their story some. Reaching the Wall Market is going to be pretty great, I expect they will sorta expand it in size and scope some. I bet that cliche sewer sequence is A LOT longer then it was in the original lol. It's not a JRPG without a sewer sequence.

I have a pretty good feeling it’s going to be part on rails just like before for a few hours and then open up as a metropolitan hub with various side quests and activities. I mean Midgar is pretty damn huge, it’ll probably play on the level of GTA’s city with some free roam. Of course, it’ll likely be restricted to just the city but a lot of story and character background could just be unearthed in Midgar alone. There’s the lower slums plus the upper levels. Expecting tons of fetch quests and vigilante missions but maybe I’m injecting a little too much here.
It will end with an iconic cg scene of the entire party looking out to the open world after the escape as a cliffhanger to part 2. Guaranteed

I don't really know what that "two Blu-rays full of content" thing was about. There are some games out there already that have install discs and the play discs which allow the games to have 100ish gb worth of content. Red Dead 2 comes to mind. I imagine it will be something like that, and who knows how big this game actually is. I'm holding out hope that they've really gone at it and built Midgar in a way that we can explore it with some freedom, and expanded it in size from the original. I'm worried it's going to be linear though. Really worried.

They really need to keep these games coming at a steady pace though, if they start letting 3+ years between releases of what should be one game... well that's probably not going to go over well with the fans. Considering the amount of voice acting they are going to have to record for each of these days, and all the mo-cap...

You could say that again, they had it real bad in the last decade with times: whether in terms of dev or release dates. Great to hear about cross gen compatilbity, so there’s definitely a stepping stone in their biz model. But yeah, those several years between parts could be an issue. The word is part 1 is two blu ray discs worth of content, and if true it would be more than enough to hold over fans. Not to mention any other minor DLC in the interim to pad out the wait between major installments.

From interviews that I have read apparently while they are stil finishing part one they have already started the planning on part two, but you still have to thing there will be at least two years between games unless they are increasing the size of the team or something so it can reasonable be finishing one game while starting the next. As far as next gen goes, Sony has announced all PS4 games and saves will be compatiable with PS5 so you have to expect the next game to be cross gen and then from then on PS5 gen. I think this next generation of consoles is going to be more of the same while more memory and better load times, but otherwise probably not a gaint leap anywhere else so it makes sense that the FF7 Remake series will be able to work across generations.

Also, I guess it is good that Square isn't dropping a trailer for FFXVI if they think it's farther out then a couple years, since you know... they've had some issues lately with that.
