Mmm, that's a really difficult question. You know, with GoT, it's based on such an expansive story and world, and it builds so much over the course of the show, it's hard to say what's the best season. I mean, the most exciting seasons are definitely 3/4 in my eyes, but I have quite a few nitpicks with the execution in 4. 
On the other hand, I thought the first couple of seasons were executed really well, even if not a lot of stuff was happening yet and the third season was just fantastic in all fronts. That being said, I hadn't read the first three seasons worth of source material until after watching the show, so my views on those may be skewed compared to my views on the fourth season.

In any case, the 3rd season is great. Dunno if I'd say it's the best season, but that's sorta hard to say for something so great anyway. My suggestion though: read the books! The third book, which encompasses seasons 3 and 4 is one of my favorite books of all time, and I don't even read the fantasy genre.
