Whipped by a fierce wind
And dashed like the ocean waves
Against the rocks—
I alone am broken to bits
And now am lost in longing.

Minamoto no Shigeyuki (1000 a.d.)
The tall grasses swayed in the springtime breeze, dancing with the ripple of the cooling winds. Zakuro's wooden geta kicked up the dust from the path towards the lord manor, allowing it too to dance in the air about them. Ahead of them the path would cut through a small grove of sakura which had just begun to blossom, it was his favorite time of year.
” What news of the war could Otomo-san wish to share with us? ” Zakuro questioned aloud to Riku as he took in a deep breath of the sweet spring air, taking a moment to allow his eyes to wander to his companion.
Nearing the manor the dirt path had now turned to smooth paving stone on which his geta made a clacking sound as he walked, in the distance he could see the gate now. The guards recognized them both and stood aside allowing the two men to enter where Onaga-san, counselor to Daimyo Otomo Tadaaki stood in wait. Zakuro attempted to hide his contempt for Onaga-san as their eyes met, he had never liked the man and never agreed with the advice he gave his lord, but that was not his place to say aloud. Onaga was tall and slender, his dark eyes cunning and quick, Zakuro wondered again why they had been summoned.
” Come Samurai and Monk, the Daimyo wishes your audience. ”Onaga's voice was high pitched and he drew out his consonants as he spoke, before turning with the motion to follow into the manor.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1
Riku walked side by side with the samurai. His shakujo in his left hand tapping on the ground as they walked, his right pinky moving to his ear and cleared it of the wax as he looked absent mindedly into the distance, “Probably nothing good if he called for us.” Riku shrugged his shoulders as he flicked his right finger removing anything that he was able to clear from his ear. He was not concerned about the task the Daimyo wished to discuss with the two the wind seemed come from their back and head towards the Daimyo's manor.

Riku glanced over at Zakuro for a moment as Onaga-san greeted them. Riku was not much of a fan of Onaga either, but that was mainly due to him sticking to formality. Riku knew that there was no way that Onaga would change his ways so he didn't feel the need to address it, but simply walked with a slight shrug to Zakuro as Onaga turned his back.

The sounds of fish splashing was carried through the air of the small garden that lead up to the manor entrance, the mossy rocks of a stone ringed pond the dominating feature of the path between the gate and house. As Zakuro reached the dark wooden stairs that lead upwards he removed his straw hat, letting it fall behind him to be caught by a string around his neck. The stairs creaked as he climbed up, casually removing his geta as Onaga-san slid the paper door and motioned them inward. Zakuro nodded and slid his feet into the provided slippers as he entered the manor following closely behind Onaga-san who lead them through the entry-way which smelled heavy of incense and through the main chamber towards the courtyard door.
” Our lordship awaits you among his cherished flowers. ” Onaga-san said as he slid a second paper door open allowing the sunlight into the main chamber, Zakuro noticing the beauty in the grains in the woodwork of the beats to either side of the door.
” Thank you Onaga-san. ”Zakuro attempted to hide his contempt for the man as he exited into the sunlight, sensing his companion by his side.
The courtyard was surrounded on all sides by the walls as wooden walkways of the manor, yet it was quite large. A stone paved walkway lined by sakura led towards another small pond, this one with a small stream running into it, appearing as if magically from somewhere under the manor. Sitting in the shade admiring the blossoms was their lord, the Daimyo Otomo Tadaaki. He was an older man, his hair beginning to thin, but he had a stature about him still, a stoic way of holding himself up. His dark green gi, the color of their clan, seemed at home among the flowers and trees of the courtyard. The lords eyes raised to meet Riku and Zakuro as the approached, his face showing worry.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1
Riku took in the beauty of their lord's manor. He appreciated the Daimyo's admiration for nature. From the following ponds with fish, to the wooden stairs case the trio climbed to reach him. Before leaving the outside, Riku felt a reassuring breeze touch his skin and seemingly push him inward. The monk felt reassured about the meeting that was about to occur. He moved his geta and placed his feet into the slippers provided as he followed the group towards the Daimyo.

Riku simply smiled and nodded towards Onaga as he opened to the door to Daimyo and followed behind Zakuro into the courtyard. Riku took in the courtyard as they walked towards the Daimyo who's look in his eyes caused the monk to worry slightly till he remembered the breeze and waited for their lord to address them.

The golden orange rays of the late day sun crept over the western wall of the courtyard and manor causing a cascade of shimmering sparkles in the small stream as they passed, approaching Daimyo Otomo. Around them the breeze had again picked up and captured the light pink cherry blossoms from the many sakura trees and sent them swirling in the air.
” I'm so relieved you have both arrived so fast. ” Damiyo Otomo spoke quickly waving off Zakuro's attempt to bow before his lord. ” I'm afraid there is no time for that, my life is in danger and I have decided that there are very few among my own that I truly can trust. ” Otomo spoke quickly, as his eyes seemed to look around them, scanning the manor walkways and the garden.
” What's this?! ”Zakuro was quick to question and he found his reflexes still sharp as his hand moved towards the blade that he wore on his back only stopping when Zakuro realized there was no need to draw. ” Surely you're safe here in your manor. ”Zakuro responded again as his eyes drifted to his friend Riku, feeling anxious now.
” Safe, no it seems none of us may be safe. I have sensed a change in the lands around us these past days, something in the wind as well… surely you have noticed this Riku? ” Damiyo Otomo began to explain, seeking reaffirmation from one as in tune with the land around them as himself in Riku. ” A darkness grows, and something is empowering it. ” Otomo continued as he now looked on the stream and flowers of the courtyard garden with worry, sensing in them the coming storm.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1

Riku's demeanor became more serious as the Daimyo informed the duo of his danger. Riku senses no danger in the immediate area, but began to think back over the past few days. “I had noticed a difference, but have not had a chance to discover what was the cause. All I know for sure is the wind brought me here as soon as you called for us.” Riku sighed as he felt unable to fully understand this uncertain feeling, “What have you been able to sense?”

Daimyo Otomo turned in silence with an outstretched hand motioning for them to listen. The wind caused the trees to sway and at first Zakuro seemed to notice nothing but then, like a dagger he heard the sound carried by the wind from the forest, a low wail of a sound that sent shivers up his spine. As the wind dropped so did the sound and a once he knew what his master was saying.
” It's the corruption, but the old tails say it was sealed away. ” Zakuro was responding aloud to what he had sensed in the wind.
” I'm afraid that seems to no longer be the case. The stories of yokai returning in the forests appear to be true, but why this is I cannot say. ” The Daimyo responded as he began to walk the stone path, passing between Riku and Zakuro as he moved under the sakura back towards the manor where Onaga-san had re-emerged from the doorway.

Zakuro turned as Otomo-san walked between he and Riku, watching as the Daimyo moved towards Onaga and the wooden stairs that would lead up onto the railed porch and doorway back into the main room of the manor. The wind caught his attention once more and he looked to the sky, that subtle breeze carving its way through the cherry trees, the same low wail trailing behind it. When his gaze returned he felt is body tense as if by reflex, ahead of him like a blur of black a figure moved from the shadows cast by the manor wall. Before Zakuro could respond he saw the others, coming from all sides towards Daimyo Otomo, the gleam of their daggers now refracting the late afternoon sun before the converged on the Daimyo who seemed to calmly exhale as the blades began to cut him.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1

Riku listened intently though his face appeared to be absent minded. His thoughts drifted to his experiences over the past weeks the theirs words fit his feelings. Riku closed his eyes as he took a deep breath and tried to get in touch with his kami. The wind carried an anxious tension to it which only seemed to intensify until the monk opened his eyes and watched as the shadows surrounded and stabbed his Daimyo. Riku's gaze cleared and sharpened as he gripped his shakkou with both hands tightly. The wind gathered from around the room, shaking the sakura tree, and surrounded Riku's shakkou forming into a churning ball visible wind. Riku pointed his weapon towards the shadows and two gusts of wind spread from the shakkou forming into twin needle points which moves to surround the Daimyo and attack each of the shadows.

The shadows were moving in ways that Zakuro could not seem to fathom, though his reflexes had once again gained control of his limbs. His blade had been drawn with such swift maneuver that he himself had seemed to not notice as it caught the orange rays of the late summer sun, his limbs acting on their own to bring the blade out and into an attacking position. Zakuro's eyes were working hard to keep up with the movement of the assassins as they had converged on Daimyo Otomo, cutting him down with flickers of steal and crimson. He felt the wind around him moving, though he was unable to comprehend that Riku had gathered the force of the wind and sent it flying past like a collection of arrows towards the invaders. Zakuro watched as one by one the ninja slid and dodged the attacks and began to slip away back into the shadows, then like a explosion of luck the last barrage struck down the legs of one of the dark figures who stumbled and fell towards the steps of the manor.
” Assassins! We must act quickly and gather what information we can! ” Zakuro was shouting as he moved ahead, blade in hand, towards his fallen lord and the one injured assassin, reaching them in just a few long steps. Zakuro rotated his wrist bringing his blade to the neck of the fallen figure, hoping Riku would be knowledgeable enough to quickly grab hold of the ninja to restrain him.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1

Riku watched in vain as his spell missed all, but one of the ninja assassins as the rest vanished into the shadows that they had come from. Riku's first reaction was to rush towards their fallen Daimyo, but Zakuro's words caught his attention and the samurai was right. The wind in the room began to gather around ninja's ankles binding his legs together as he brought down his shakkou down onto the ninja's wrist causing him to loosen his dagger as wind formed around his upper torso keeping his arms tight against his chest. Riku knew that the binding on his arms wouldn't be strong enough to hold the ninja, but was certain that it would delay the ninja long enough for Zakuro to attack. Confident that the combination of his binding and Zakura could keep the ninja from running, Riku rushed towards Daimyo Otomo and checked for signs of life.

Zakuro could feel the air whipping around him, tossing his long dark hair. Riku had moved quickly, and within seconds the assassin was disarmed and bound but holding a ninja, even a injured one, Zakuro knew would likely end in failure in some way. His mind working quickly Zakuro took his blade into his right hand and moved quickly with his left pulling at the sleeves and openings of the assassin's gi, looking for anything that could help identify the killer's clan.
” There's nothing here! ” Zakuro spit the words out as he allowed his hands to move to the ninja's dark mask and with a tug pulled it free. ” His eyes… ” Zakuro murmured as he looked on the man's face, scarred and devoid of emotion, though there was something about his eyes that Zakuro couldn't place.
” LORD OTOMO! ” Onaga's voice suddenly belted with such volume that Zakuro's gaze was pulled from the assassin to Riku and the fallen Daimyo Otomo Tadeeki. Standing in the doorway of the manor Onaga, flanked on either side by several fully armored guards was arriving on the scene. ” You Bastards! You've slain him! ” Onaga yelled on, as Zakuro let his eyes move back towards the assassin to find him gone, disappeared as if he was never there.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1

Riku searched as thoroughly as he could, but he could find no sign of life. Riku looked up at Zakuro, “He's dead…” Just as those words escaped his lips, Onaga bursted into the courtyard and accused the two of slaying Otomo. “It was…Shit!” Riku attempted to point to the restrained assassin, but Zakuro stood alone, the ninja had broken his spell and escaped. The looked on Onaga's face told Riku he wouldn't listen to reason. Grasping his shakkou, Riku called for the wind again and with a sweeping motion cause an arc of wind to shoot out towards Onaga and his samurai hopefully causing them to stumble, “Let's go.” Riku began running in the opposite direction of Onaga trying to make his way to the back exit. He knew this wouldn't make them look good, but they wouldn't be able to figure out who sent the assassins if they were killed by Onaga's samurais.

A brief moment of uncertainty overtook Zakuro as his mind struggled to put together everything that was happening around him. First the strange meeting with the Daimyo, his sombre tone, then the assassination and now this. Why had fate brought him to this moment and how would he find his way out of it? Suddenly an arc of wind snapped the Samurai's mind back into the present as it curved up the stairs towards Onaga and the Samurai striking them with enough force to send them stumbling backwards.
” Yes, we probably should. ” Zakuro replied to Riku as he quickly sheathed his blade and turned to follow Riku. ” We should probably make our way around through the structure. ” Zakuro shouted out as he began to turn to his left towards one of the four major buildings knowing from past experiences in the manor that the Samurai barracks were at the rear gate and would make for a trying task if they were to try to escape through them.
” STOP THEM! ”Onaga's voice sudden cut through the courtyard, though Zakuro did not turn to look back.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1

With his adrenaline pumping, Riku began to think back about the day and thought about how the two had gotten into this situation. From being called to assist their Daimyo with saving his life to running away now thought to have killed him, Riku couldn't help but think that they had been setup. It couldn't just be an accident that the assassins attacked when the two of them were there to speak with the Daimyo. Riku's mind was pulled back by the sound of Zakuro's voice. Riku's nature of making it up as he went almost sent the two into the worse location of the manor. He turned and began running in the same direction of Zakuro, “Let's get out of here!”

Zakuro could feel the wind, and even though the situation had proved to be dire, he couldn't help but hear the wail of darkness being carried by it, as he moved as swiftly as his feet would carry him through the courtyard. Riku was behind him, he could sense that, and something told him the Samurai would have regained their stature by now as well and would be in chase. Reaching the wooden stairs, Zakuro leaped up them in one step and without stopping moved into the manor. The great room they entered was full of mats and pillows as well as shelves of scrolls and many works of art. Zakuro remembered this room as where the Lord liked to entertain, it had many objects of interest to energize conversation and dialog, something at Otomo had loved when socializing.
” Yes, I think we should head back the way we entered and hopefully miss any of Otomo's guard. ” Zakuro replied as he stopped for a brief moment, sucking in as much air as he could before turning to his left and bounding towards the sliding paper door that would separate this room from a long hallway that would connect towards the lord's living quarters. ” We'll probably encounter some force regardless though. ” Zakuro continued as he opened the door to reveal the corridor which, at the end was guarded by a single samurai in full armor, sword in hand.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1

Riku followed closely behind Zakuro as they made their way through the manor. Riku stopped short as he caught sight of a samurai stopping their path, “Guess we'll have to show them why we were both called here today.” Riku commented to Zakuro as he swung is shakkou around him to gather the wind to encompass the top of the staff. From the many battles fought with Zakuro, Riku wanted to give him time to charge before sending off his wind arrows. The wind that sprung from the shakkou split into two spirals that left a lane for Zakuro to charge through and twisted there way to attack the samurai on both sides.

The corridor was silent for several moments after Riku spoke, it's length about twenty feet and it's width around eight. Zakuro had quickly judged that fighting with a sword in such a space would need to be done quickly, he would have to do most of the heavy lifting in his first move. Knowing that his Iaijutsu was strong Zakuro felt for the hilt of his blade, his eyes never leaving or wavering from the Samurai who stood between them and moving forward. In an instant, like a strike of lightning his Odachi was free and he was moving forward as he brought the hilt of the blade into both of his hands. Zakuro crossed the room in two steps and with a subtle leap he feigned a slash before thrusting forward under the defense of the Samurai who was impaled through his lower left side. Zakuro sensing Riku would act to finish this short battle quickly forced his body as low down as he could.
” Now! ” Was all Zakuro said, though he shouted it quite loud as he waited for the force of Riku's wind magic to be hurtled down the hallway into the injured Samurai.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1

Riku smirked as he watched Zakuro take the offense his magic gathered the wind. His wind arrows spiralling intensified as they drove themselves towards the samurai. “Let's go!” Shortly after Zakuro dropped low, Riku thrusted his shakkou forward to focus his thoughts and the two spirals quickened and hit the samurai on both sides sending the samurai backwards. Knowing time wasn't on their side, Riku sprung after Zakuro ready to go into close quarters should the samurai want to fight the duo further.

The intense force of Riku's wind magic sent the injured Samurai guard flying backwards through the sliding paper door at the end of the hallway with such a crash that it would definitely alert the others to which way they were now headed. Zakuro quickly got back to his feet, keeping his Odachi drawn as he expected to face more opposition before they got out of the manor.
” Alright, we must be quick though and simply find the exit avoiding combat as much as possible. ” Zakuro responded, sensing that conflict would only slow down their escape and make their so far favorable odds less with each passing minute, and that was before his mind could even consider the fact the would not only have to flee the manor but the city as well.
Shaking the unneeded thoughts Zakuro moved foward into the room the Samurai had been thrown, paying the fallen man little attention as he quickly looked over the room, scanning for their next exit. The room itself was large, not like the previous, but still spacious. Zakuro quickly placed it as the Daimyo's sleeping chamber. Zakuro felt a ting of shame as he realized he was wearing his geta on the lord's tatami mats but quickly realized their survival was more important than customs. Looking to his left Zakuro motioned to a sliding door which he assumed would lead back towards the grand chamber they had initially been led through before entering the courtyard.
” How about some of that wind to knock it open, if anyone is waiting on the other side it will at least stun them. ” Zakuro spoke as he stepped aside giving Riku room to work with.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1

Riku followed behind Zakuro closely as they made their way towards the exit of the manor. His heart raced as all he could think of is the samurai in the manor swarming upon the two. They made a good team, but they could only handle so many of them at once, certainly not all of them. “I got it covered.” Riku took his shakkou in both of his hands as he swung it above his head as he spun in a circle. Wind began to swirl around the top of the shakkou into an orb. With a burst of speed, Riku swung the shakkou down vertically over his head and sent the orb towards the sliding door. Upon clashing with the door, the orb would explode outward in all direction into the other room.
