Chapter VI ~ Beasts of Burden

Brown flowed in a sea of roses as the all familiar dream of Rem filled his mind, unfortunately cut short by the approach of a large vehicle pulling alongside the sand steamer. Vash's senses picked them up immediately. He would wait for his new companions to start this adventure, a slight smirk rising from his lips. It wouldn't be less than thirty seconds before the two were up and alert.
” AHH! One more minute Mommy!! ” he would scream as they sprang into action, falling out of the cot and fumbling around before quickly standing. ” Ugh.. Right let's go! ” he would yell looking back and forth at the two with a red face. He then reached down to his side and wrapped his fingers around the grip of his long colt, jamming the hammer down with his thumb to ready his trusted sidekick, quickly following Jonas and Alucard.

  Chapter VI: Beasts of Burden

The steamer rocked again as the breaks engaged, sending Jonas tumbling back towards his bunk. His reflexes quick, Jonas extended his hands outward grasping the bunk's rail before he lost his footing, saving himself a painful fall. The others seemed to come to the same conclusion and Jonas was surprised but the quickness Valentino had shown. He was sure his early judgement about the man was correct, even more so now that he had seen his reaction time.
” We need to find out what's going on. ” Jonas said as he reached towards the door, feeling in the darkness for the latch. ” Let's go take a look around. ” He continued as he finally found what he was looking for, with a quick thrust sliding the door open.
Light from the corridor streamed into their small cabin, illuminating the three mean and their meager possessions. Jonas was into the passageway quickly, his head going from left to right looking for any sign of activity. Things seemed calm, he assumed that up to this point no announcement had been made by the officers, if they were being boarded it might not have even happened yet. Looking to his right Jonas peered down the long corridor, with many doors on both the left and the right. His head turning back to the left he could see the nearby L-bend that they had passed upon leaving the stairs. He cursed himself for not learning more of the steamers layout but knew that a detailed map of the ship was posted at all the stairwells.

Looking around and noticing the corridors had yet to fill with people or grew loud with chaos, the situation had not yet reached this floor. Alucard walked past Jonas with purpose, heading towards the stairs they used to get to their room. If he had to look for the steamer crashers, it would help to know what the layout of the vehicle looked like. “Hmm, if I was going to attack, where to start…” Alucard said to himself as he analyzed the map.

The hull of the sand steamer would groan as the shifting of weight would cause them to jumble about the cabin; planting his feet firmly to hold himself from falling. Jonas would take the lead with Vash nodding in tow before Jonas gripped the door and pulled it wide open to reveal the exterior. They would step out into the corridor with Alucard quickly brushing past them to gaze upon the map by the stairs. His eyes traveled the opposite direction, being cautious of anything at this point.
” We should end this quickly before anyone gets hurt.. ” he spoke as he turned to follow and come up behind Alucard, his brow squinting as he observed the map aswell.

The passageway seemed eerie and quiet as Jonas moved with the others back towards the stairwell where the map for the floor they were on was posted as well as bullet points for important areas on other levels of the steamer.
” I agree, it's odd that the ship hasn't fired any shots from it's turrets if it was a bandit strike, it's also odd that there hasn't been an announcement. ” Jonas was thinking out loud, as his eyes drifted around the map and his mind pictured the four massive turrets—two per side—that severed as the steamers main form of defense. ” We need to find someone and see what's going on. ” Jonas continued to speak as his eyes stopped scanning the map. Jonas pushed his finger out, touching the diagram, his focus within one nearby room that was labeled “Crew Lounge”. ” Let's go. ” The dark haired man called out as he turned from the stairwell and made his was towards the nearby lounge.

It should be noted that there are six levels to this steamer and we're on the third. I'm about to update the map with our general location, from this point on when you move in the OOC just leave a note about your location so I can update the map each round.

Alucard's adrenaline began to decrease as nothing continued to happen. No loud noises to indicate anyone except the three of them gave a shit. If Alucard were to find out only the three of them were still on the ship, he wouldn't be surprised at this point. Putting his Jackal away in his coat to not startled the crew, Alucard followed behind Jonas, “Why hasn't anyone looked out into the hallway at least to see why the steamer put on it's breaks?”

Vash memorized the map within a few seconds and turned to face Jonas, listening as he agreed that something strange was going on. Something was off about this situation; the entire vibe was wrong. Vash would turn in tow with Jonas to listen to Alucard grumble as he holstered his weapon. Vash's fingers remained firmly in place on his.
” Time to find some answers ” he said with a smirk as he shuffled his way to Jonas. There were two passageways on either side; the crew bunks or the lounge area. 'Which to check first' he thought before Jonas made the decision for them. With a skip Vash would bring himself alongside Jonas then run straight through the lounge doorway.

  Chapter VI: Beasts of Burden

An air of mystique permeated the corridor, it's fingers grasping the three as they neared the crew lounge door, their remarks adding to it's aura. Jonas looked back at the others, his eyes showing signs of concern as he reached out and rapped quickly on the door. Silence followed, no response. His body tensed as he placed his palm against the sliding door, pressing and pushing it open slowly, his eyes fixated. Jonas stopped halfway, he didn't blink, he knew the others saw it too. Scattered about the room—their bodies twisted and mangled with expressions of grotesque pain and suffering— were the off duty crew, six of them to be exact. Jonas knew instantly they were dead, there was no one who could survive such physical abuse. His eyes drifted to the floor away from the bodies, his mind blank, in a state of shock.
” This— ” Jonas had begun to speak, his voice low an trembling, when the breaks engaged once again this time more violently. Jonas staggered forward, catching himself against the crew lounge door before his head shot back to the others. ” What the hell is going on here?! ” He found himself asking, his mind racing.

The horror of the scene in front of Alucard struck him to the core, causing him to look away, but a small part of him still wanting to look. “Or maybe just more questions.” Alucard said looking over at Junior. “What could have caused this?” Said Alucard to himself as he braced himself to look at the bodies. They were only a few rooms down from this room and Alucard had not heard a thing.

The scene before him brought back flashbacks of several moments in his life. Wherever he turned there was death. And yet again he was powerless to help these poor people. His face lowered as he gritted his teeth, tears slowly forming from his eyes.
” Why.. why did it have to be this way.. ” he spoke with stutter, blaming himself for not being aware earlier. He should have been able to prevent this. Vash turned away from the bodies strewn about and stared directly at his two cohorts. The tear lines laid fresh on his cheeks but the fire was alive in his eyes as he glared past them. ” We need to move fast and stop this ” he spoke, voice steady.

  Chapter VI: Beasts of Burden

Jonas averted his eyes from the grizzly scene in the crew lounge, unconsciously taking several step backwards until he felt his back press against the far wall of the passageway. Jonas stood silent for a moment as his mind combed over what he had seen, trying to figure out how all those people could be killed so close to their cabin without arousing them. As he had the thought another quickly replaced it, and without warning he turned and quickly slide the door to the crew quarters open, revealing a scene much like that before, bodies in bunks and on the floor, their limbs and faces twisted in agony.
” I have a feeling that we might be too late to stop this… ” Jonas said as he moved away from the second room, his eyes drifting to Valentino, stopping to meet his gaze, attempting to look into the man's heart. ” For some reason we have been spared, and I think that reason is you. ” Jonas continued never blinking or breaking his gaze, waiting for the answer.

Moving away from Valentino and closer to Jonas, Alucard looked upon the stranger with new eyes, “I have to agree with Jonas on this one. You seem to know who or what caused this.” Though Alucard couldn't fathom what caused this, Valentino's response seemed to be too okay with this situation as if he half expected something like this to happen.

Vash gritted his teeth slightly as the two men now stared at him with an all too familiar look. This was the last that he needed right now. His hand remained steady on his revolver; his chest then rising as he inhaled deeply before letting it out.
” I've been searching for a person for a very long time… I don't know who did this.. but it's probably because of him ” he said to them, still debating inside whether to reveal his identity as the steamer rumbled. 'Someone has to still be on this thing' he thought as he tilted his head to the stairs.

Jonas's eyes followed Valentine's as they drifted with thought back to the stairs, the thought clear enough for him to pick up on. His words had shed little light on their situation, but had admitted to relating to him, which was a start.
” Let's go. ” Jonas spoke very matter-of-factly as he started back towards the stairs, doing his best to remove the sight of the twisted and deformed bodies from his mind, with little avail. ” We should head for the bridge, hopefully someone is still piloting this tank. ” Jonas said over his shoulder to the others as he reached the stairwell they had just previously left, remembering from when they had boarded that the bridge would be on the uppermost floor of the steamer. ” I think the bridge is on the top level, so lets hurry. ” He finished as he upped his pace and started to dash up the stairs, remaining alert and aware of the doors as he passed them.

Alucard's gaze lasted on Valentino for a few moments before he shook his head, waving off the negative thoughts, “Well he may have found you.” Valentino could have easily tried to kill the two of them should he have been involved with this. “Let's hope someone is still driving this thing.” Alucard followed behind Jonas with the thought of the blacked out window in the back of his head. Still wondering if just their window is was blocked or if they sommehow figured out a way to block every window.

Vash let out a short breath of relief as the intensity between the trio simmered down for now. He knew their suspicions were still there and rightfully so, but now was not the time. The three of them would turn and begin heading down the corridor towards the stairs, his boots clanking along the steps.
” No.. Knives wouldn't show up here ” he muttered under his breath, lowering his head slightly as they paced down the steps. He shook his head a bit and continued on. ” Whoever it is I should handle this.. you guys find an exit and get off this thing ” he said as he matched the stride of Jonas's pace. He knew they were probably right; whoever did this was taunting Vash and he did not want to risk anymore lives today.

  Chapter VI: Beasts of Burden

Jonas grasped for air as he made quick work of the stairs, taking them two at a time. As he climbed his newfound allies' words struck home, and deep down he truly hoped that Alucard's thoughts would come true, that someone was still piloting the steamer. Reaching the top of the stairway he paused for a moment, hesitant to open the stairway door, unsure of what might wait for them on the other end. Hearing the others as the quickly came behind him Jonas summoned the nerve and slid the metallic door open revealing an empty, if not barren corridor. His eyes glanced back towards the map which detailed the seventh level of the steamers floor layout.
” The bridge is just down this corridor, come on. ” He found himself saying as he stepped into the passageway, his senses tingling, aware fully of the danger around him. He looked back at the others as he started down the hall, ignoring the doors to his right and left as he made straight for the bridge.
The lights flickered and cast them in darkness for a brief moment as they traversed the corridor. Ahead the double sliding doors of the bridge lay on Jonas' left. He looked back to the others, panting as the weight of the voyage caught up to him. Waiting he looked to Alucard and the new comer, stepping aside and hoping one of the others would accept the task of opening the bridge doors.

The errie quiet of the steamer began to get to Alucard as they continued to the bridge. Not to say there wasn't enough ambient noise, but there was no noise from any life on board. Without even checking every room on the way, Alucard would have bet that everyone on board was as dead as the crew they had just left behind. Watching as Jonas stopped at the door to the bridge, Alucard lifted his jackal up and stepped forward. Looking back with his hand on the knob, Alucard nodded and opened the door slowly, not trying to make much noise.

They continued on their way, not even hesitating to let him continue on alone. These two were different then those he had met over the years, that was for sure. As much as he would normally enojy the company of such two individuals, now was not the time. They would clammer up to the seventh level, alert and ready for anything. Jonas' motioned and Alucard complied. Vash would then ready himself in front of the door, raising his Colt to eye level towards the entrance with his feet braced, ready to move if necessary.
” Let's get this over with ” he said watching Alucard steady his hand upon the doorknob before turning it to reveal the room.

Their seemed to be a moment of hesitation in Alucard's actions—a feeling that seemed to permeate all three men—as he slowly slid the bridge door open. Jonas felt his heart throb as he watched the metallic door move aside, ready for any kind of scene to present itself, half sure that bullets would be flying and slightly thrown aback by the the lack thereof. Looking in, the bridge was positioned along the large arc of a window from which the steamer could be piloted. Several mechanical stations where located through out, all with large work stations containing gauges and knobs, flashing lights and switches, however was the bridge didn't contain were any people, no signs of life at all.
” This is not what I expected to find ” Jonas said aloud as the realization that no one was piloting the steamer set in, a call that sen Jonas rushing past the others towards the arced window, looking out onto the barren landscape of Gunsmoke which was moving by at a steady rate ahead of them. ” Either of you know how to stop this thing? ” Jonas said as he tried to make sense of the gauges and levers before the entire ship shook once more, as it had before a sense of breaking which was clearly something else entirely.
