Case One: Demons Abound

The sun had barely just risen over the horizon of the isolated encampment and already the residences were bringing life to the forested area. A loud rythmic clang echoed even through the dense trees that surrounded the small minka. The clangs came at the same intervals for several strikes until an extended pause followed by another set of interals from behind the dojo, smoke rising from the furnace. The minka was modest to suit the surrounded, it could not house more than 4 rooms. The single floor raised off the ground by a couple feet with wide wooden staircase leading into it. A large, level sand pit rested just before the stairs. There two men stood facing each other.

It had been a month since Koichi had his run in with the Yakuza. Botan had taken him here after making his deal with Koenma and into the care of Seika to train him to act when Koenma called. The trainings had been intense. Just as Seika noticed Koichi was getting use to the dfficulty, he would increase the intensity so that his whole body screamed from exertion. Up until this day, Seika had been beating form into the man's boorish style, trying to unlock his hidden potential. Preparing Koichi's body for when he managed to give his reiki form. Now Seika stood, hands behind his back, chest slightly leaning forward. His face as stern as a cliff overlooking the ocean. He knew that disciples he took in would begin to resent his training methods in short order and would need to release that anger from time to time, or at the very least try. In in those baser emotions, their potential could be drawn out and take shape. Seika was more than happy to oblige that urge, if only for them to realized how much further they must progress to do so,
“Begin when ready.” Seika's voice cut through the metal on metal boom that continued to echo around them.

Koichi felt the sand between his toes as he stood looking ahead of him at the old geezer, knowing what it was he wanted of him but feeling the urge to just tell the old fella to shove it and head back into the house to try to get some more sleep. However he remained silent and continued to look across the fire pit into the man's eyes, trying to get a better read on him.
” Listen old fella, I've told you this probably every day since I got here. I like to fight with blades, I'm not a hand to hand kind of— ” He has begun to say before trailing off as the old man's gaze changed. ” Fine, but one of these days I'm going to get in a lucky shot and crack you one. ” He said, giving into the old man as he lowered in his stance, squaring his shoulders before taking a step forward and then with what energy he could muster he pushed off with his back foot and leap towards the man, hoping to strike him square in the jaw.

While nothing in Seika's face gave away his thoughts, this aura of disappointment seemed to radiate off of him. His body remained in it's same place until the split second before it contact his jaw. It seemed to disappear and reappear on the outside of Koichi's fist. His left hand already on the younger man's wrist and with a swift twist he exposed the underside of Koichi's wrist. A light sigh escaped his lips as he felt little radiating from where his hand grabbed. A hammer fist crashed down on the wrist causing the hand to release his tension as two swift kicks to Koichi's torso sent to flying backwards. “Yes, yes…your precious blades.” Seika went back into his previous position with his hands behind his back and torso leaning forward, giving the impression that he may not have even moved,
“What use is a blade when I can take it away from you?” Energy danced upon the old man's hand as he moved it from behind his back, “If you don't wish to die when your baby master next cries, you must rely on yourself. Find this power, let it roar through your body, and strike me!”

The first rush of pain from the simple strike to his fist seemed to leap up Koichi's arm like a bolt of lightning, then before he could even react he felt the kicks to his torso. The young man let out a blast of air as he staggered backwards, instinctively reach for his stomach.
” God damnit you old bastard! ” Koichi was succumbing to his anger, his eyes first looking down at the sand before he slowly raised his head and allowed them to meet the gaze of the master once more, now burning with rage. ” I just wanted to slug you one, but… no, that's not ENOUGH! ” He was burning with rage now, he could feel something swirling inside of him, and his fists seemed to be radiating heat. The young man rushed ahead again, waiting for the old man to make his move.

A smirk flashed across Seika's stone facial features for a moment as his discipline threathened him,
“Maybe start with once.” Seika taunted as he moved just out of the way of the next attack. With each subsequent attack, Seika moved out of the way and a firm pressure would be felt upon Koichi's body about the size of a finger, “Good. Now feel that power within. Remember what it is like to use that crude spirit gun that the baby had gifted you.” As the exchange of blows continued the rythmic clangs paused then continued once again. The heat in Koichi's fist would continue to increase until it felt like the furnace itself and his hands seemed ready to explode. Seika ducked under another punch and back flipped several feet, giving space between the two. He moved his right arm in a circular motion with his left hand clutching his opposite shoulder. An blue aura began to radiate from the master's arm as his face remained stern with a touch of entertainment, “If you wish to survive this next attack, you must claim your power as your own and give it form, or perish here.” Seika bent his knees and pushed forward with his arm cocked back ready to strike Koichi's face as the metal beat went deaf in the background.

Koichi was moving as fast as he could ever remember moving, his hands were pushing foward growing hotter and hotter with each passing moment as he took swing after swing at the old geezer, who seemed to continue to be faster and either move out of the way or deflect each of his attacks no matter how faster or fierce they seemed to the young man.
” I know what my power is you old sack of shit, I'm through with all of this! ” The words seemed to speak themselves as Koichi sensed what the old man had in store, having seen his attacks over the past weeks and finally everything began to click in his brain. When the strike came the slender young man, his dark long hair jumping and dancing as he moved, felt the anger welling up inside of him. Koichi put his arms out in front of him and he felt the burning heat as the spirit energy literally arced from his hands like lightning, at first with no form but with flashes of a blade, that he had so longed for. He wielded it as best he could, defensively, hoping to knock back the elder's attack and survive long enough to strike back with one of his own.

The speed at which Seika approached Soichi seemed to increase as he saw his reiki take shape, his fist moving to clash directly with the sword. Sparks flew as the two opposing auras met and for seconds that seemed to go on forever the forces met ending when Seika jumped back placing his hands behind his back showing no signs of an follow up attack.
“Looks like you found a blade I can't take.” Seika looked to the empty sky above with an intent stare though the pressure of his continued awareness of Soichi would not be lost of him, “Just in time. Your baby master cries for your attention.” As if in response to Seika's scathing words, a figure in blue could be seen flying towards them.

The forest enclosure seemed to go silent after the clash of the two reikis as the usual rythmic clanging of the metal also stopped.
“Awesome!” Ichii was standing on the side minka that the three called home. The young boy wore a white collared shirt with a blue vest, small scorch marks tarnished the white shirt. His hands blackened with soot as he ran with gleeful applause towards Soichi. Ichii stared up at the reiki sword in wonder, “Looks like you finally found your own power.” Ichii smiled with a sense of accomplishment, “Taking after the number 1 disciple, I see.” Ichii could sense the greater focus from Seika after this comment and paid it no mind. In his own mind, he had seniority, in age and time with their sensei. Ichii's smile dropped as he looked to the sky following Seika's comment, “Guess we won't have time to celebrate.”

Koichi took in several deep breaths as he felt the lightning in his hand rippling with energy. He looked on it with wonder as the geezer seemed to lose focus on the fight and look upwards. As he began to do the same he heard the voice of the other, seemingly attempting to place himself at the top of something that Koichi had never card about.
” Teacher's pet is back I see, I already told you I don't give two shits about this training, I'm here because apparently it's what I HAVE to do. ” Koichi replied as he finally turned his head upwards looking for whatever it was that had drawn the old man's attention, and not all that surprised at this point on who he say approaching from above.

A pink figured soared down innto the clearing and jumped down from his flying oar weightlessly into the sand,
“Oh, sweet Soichi, you don't have to do anything.” Botan covered her mouth with her hand as she laughed to herself, “You are always welcome to take a little trip with me though.” Her threat undercutting her jovial tone. “Enough, messenger. What does the baby want?” Botan fumed at the disrespected towards her maste, slamming her right foot and punching her clenched first by her side, “Show Koenma respect! Oh, Ichii.” As if completely forgetting her anger, Botan noticed Ichii who seemed to be hiding behind Soichi from her perspective, “No need to hide. Do you have what I told you to make? You two will need it for your first official case.”

As Botan approached from the sky, Ichii found himself unconsciously moving his body behind Soichi, hiding himself from her view as much as possible. He knew she was not here to chat or to congradulate Soichi on manifesting his power. She was here with a message from Koenma, which meant more work for him.
“Hi, Botan.” Soichi waved towards her as he came out from behind Soichi with a great reluctance as she noticed him. The boy's hand seemed to move through molasses as he went into a brown messenger bag which materialized around his neck and on the right side of his body. Ichii pulled out a compass on a watch band, the black pointer revolving around as if unable to find the northern direction. “Yea, this will work as you asked.”

Koichi knew instantly who the old geezer was looking at, and he guessed that the expression on his face did little in his favor based on how he had acted upon landing. He also assumed the reason she had arrived, and while he wasn't exactly happy about being thrust onto their first case, at least it meant he wouldn't have to spend another day looking at the old fart next to him.
” Our first case eh? Anything to get me out of this dump, even if I have to spend the entire time with this suck up. ” Koichi exclaimed as he took a small step to the side in an effort to not allow Ichii a place to hide.

Botan clapped her hands with a gleeful smile at Koichi's enthusiasm to take on his first case, even if not for the best of reasons. Botan took the compass and moved his hand into the big folds of her sleeves. When her hand was visible again, the compass was gone.
“I'm glad you're ready for your first mission! We've gotten word that a demon is planning a theft on one of our vaults. We don't know how they plan to steal from us, nor do we know their names. What we do know…is they are confident they will succeed.” Botan looked down at the ground and held her chin at the last part of her comment, showing less confidence than the apparent thieves. “To find them, you two will need this.” Botan moved her hand into her sleeve and pulled out the demon compass with a grand gesture, as if Ichii had not just given this to her, “The demon compass. It allows you to track a demon's energy.” A blue light began to glow from Botan's hand and onto the compass causing the black tip to spin faster, “Well, I'm sure it'll work once we leave here.” Botan waved her empty hand dismissively, “The compass is now set to…someone in the crew. Well, I'm not going to tell you how to do your job.” Botan presented the compass to Koichi and placed her oar between her legs, “When you two are ready, hop on and let's head out.”

Ichii moved forward as Koichi moved to the side and stood side by side with them. Ichii's jaw dropped and he looked from Botan and Koichi until giving up when Botan displayed the compass as if she had just brought it,
“It also had a meter on the bottom…here…that shows how far away they are.” Ichii drooped his shoulders in defeat as he walked forward and pointed to a bar of yellow circles that continued to switch between full and empty as fast as the compass indicator spun, “It'll work once we get out of here.” Ichii's pride as a blacksmith wouldn't let me go without explaining that it wasn't his creations fault that it wasn't working. Ichii tapped his vest and a warm blue glow enveloped the small holes on his shirts and repaired all the holes and scorch marks. “Are we all going to fit on that.” Ichii raised his eyebrow eyeing the oar.

The tall young dark haired main watched as a cool breeze trickled in through the trees and whipped Botan's sleeves as he did her little trick, bringing out the compass she had just received and beginning to explain what it was they were actually going to be doing.
” So basically you want us to use thing to find some demon or demons that are planning to steal something from the toddler's vault? ” Koichi asked rhetorically, understanding what it was she wanted of him but just wanting to give everyone a hard time. Before allowing any kind of response he simply took a step forward ahead of Ichii and took his place on the oar, seeing no need for another smart ass response yet, as he needed to get as much information out of the weird woman as he could.

Botan looked at her oar to Ichii's comment on it's size and with a slight wave and a smile the oar extended to make room for the trio.
“Now don't you be too lonely while these two are we me.” Botan waved towards Seika as the oar took off from the ground. Seika merely grumbled something that went unheard as he waved the group off and headed into his home.

The oar was a much faster form of transportation than it appeared. A light force could be felt keeping those on board from falling off. As the group reached the edge of the clearing, an odd breeze past by them almost as if they had flew through it rather than it blowing past them. The endless expanse of the forest filled the landscape for as far as the eye could see. Any who wished to turn around for a final look at their home would find nothing, but trees.
“That's right, Koichi. What is kept in that vault must not be allowed to fall into their hands or the human world would be in trouble. Now that we are out of there, mind letting me know which direction we should be heading in, Koichi.” Botan gestured towards the compass with a wink.

Ichii followed behind Koichi once the oar had expended the fit all of them. It was not until then that the thought of following off crossed his mind,
“Uhh…Are there any handles….” Ichii's voice trailed off as the oar took off for the sky. His hands gripped the oar so tight that his knuckles began to turn white. After a few terrifying moments, Ichii noticed that he was able to keep balanced on the oar not only by his hands, but by the spiritual energy which propelled the oar forward. “I would really love a chance to analyze how the oar works.” With a new found confidence, Ichii moved his feet to stand upon the oar as if he were surfing. His head turned back towards where they had come from knowing that he would see nothing, but trees. He had lived there with Seika for some time and still Ichii still did not know how that barrier worked. Ichii had tried to snoop around for the source shortly after moving there, but had not been successful in find it. He stopped looking after he noticed Seika always gave him extra work shortly after each time he would look for it.

There was a sudden burst of wind and the oar lifted up into the air, it tossed Koichi's hair and he instinctively moved his hands to flatten it when he realized he was balancing on the oar with ease. He looked over at Botan, who seemed at ease, then to his other side at Ichii who seemed to be rising in anxiety as they continued to rise higher.
” Uh, direction.. yeah… ” Koichi said basically talking to himself as he reached into his vest pocket to grab the compass, pulling it out quickly while trying his best to focus on it rather then the distance the oar had made from the forest below them. ” Assuming this thing works— ” Koichi laid a subtle dig at Ichii. ” It says we should head south-east..uh…ish. ” he finished, before feeling the oar with an unexpected burst of speed begin to accelerate at a remarkable speed towards the south-east, sending the wind whippin through his hair once more.

Botan smiled at Koichi's comment towards Ichii as she leaned herself to cause the oar to began flying south-east,
“Oh you don't need to doubt that compass.” Botan looked back and gave Ichii a wink, “Ichii is quite skilled…when given enough reason.” Ichii grumbled from the back of the oar  to this comment. The forest passed below the three as an increasingly fast speed. The oar began to rise in altitude until it was above the clouds. Minutes passed until the compass gave off a small beep and the oar made its descent from the clouds. No signs of the forest could be seen, instead a small city was all that could be seen.

Botan took the three down low, passing a school with a sign reading “Sarayashiki High School.” Botan steered the oar down in a small alleyway, keeping the three out of sight from others as much as possible. Botan swung around and noticed that three of the five lights at the bottom of the compass were bright,
“Well, this is as far as I go. I'm sure the two can take it from it.” Botan said as she signaled for the two to get off the oar. Ichii hopped off the oar and looked towards Koichi for direction.

Koichi caught the wink that Botan had given to Ichii and sensed something coded in the way she replied but decided now was not the time to bring it up, as it seemed he would have a lot more on his plate to deal with in the immediate future. Looking down on the forest he felt the mist of the clouds as they climbed higher until all view of the ground was blocked out. He wondered for several moments how fast they were actually moving and was not exactly surprised when they began to descend and the forest was gone, replaced by streets and buildings. He did not recognize the town they had arrived in but was glad to get his feet back on the ground when they landed.
” So we just keep following this thing? ” Koichi asked once more before Botan could leave, his body language suggesting he still didn't fully trust the compass..
