With the release looming I'm hoping some of you guys drop by to discuss the game, any thoughts on the demo?

The remake is great!

It makes me want to start posting at FF7 Fortress again, and I wonder how many others feel the same way.

But I swung by there today, or perhaps it was the archived version of it, and it seemed like it was out of operation…

Even if there isn't much activity, and probably a lack of events, could FF7 Fortress still work? Can we still make characters and have stories there once more? Even if it's a solo adventure, and the system is classic, I'd still love to rp there again some day.

Abyss, that's a name I haven't seen in awhile. I sorta figured the remake dropping might bring out a few old groups people.
Oh yeah, the remake definitely came out great. I'm in chapter 9 right now myself and I've been very happy with how they updated the story to this point. The way they have expanded on all the locations while keeping all the aspects from the original has been really amazing.
As for Fortress, yeah it's sorta an archive. There are actually parts of several versions of Fortress archived here but the one on the homepage is the last version. We were continuing to RP on it up until a few years ago when Sanarian went MIA. We had a long RP going at that point for a couple years. I definitely miss RPing FF7 and if we could round up a few people to do something similar I'd be interested.

Nice, I just got to Chapter 8 myself, and I can see why they didn't release the entire game at once. But it's cool, I'm glad they decided to add more content and delve deeper into the story.

I've been lurking on FF7 Fortress though, reminiscing about the good ol days. I've missed that awesome layout and all the aesthetics, glad to see it all again. I must say though, I'm eager and excited to create a character and get back to some RP.

Would it be alright if I were to at least post a character? Perhaps get any others who might also be lurking to notice that there could still be activity?

I mean I can only imagine what the next game is going to be like. This has been pretty linear so far, and I expect the entire game to be since the Midgar part of FF7 is that way as well. But I mean, when you leave it all opens up. I wonder how they will handle that? That feeling of going to Kalm and the Chocobo Farm before the Zolom, that's going to be amazing.

As for Fortress, yeah you should. I'm down to do some RPing, we're not super active here all the time, but every now and then a few of us get together and do some stuff. Feel free, I'll try to contact some people.

Oh man, so looking forward to hunting that oversized snake again. Good times.

And awesome! Hopefully some people get back to you! I'll start putting together a bio form, probably won't have it posted until late tonight or tomorrow though.

I've been taking my time with it, on Chapter 10 myself. It's been absolutely incredible so far and I had zero faith in Square to pull it off after how much I disliked the last two entries iinto the series (13 and 15), so this is a crazy pleasant surprise.

I tend to not like action combat in my JRPGs, either, but overall the combat system has been extremely well done. I like how it encourages you to switch characters, and Tifa is super fun to play with. The only thing I would like to see changed in the future is to add a little more twitch to the blocking mechanic. As it is now, it seems really sluggish. I may just be too used to parrying in Souls games or similar action games where it's very responsive. Maybe it's intentional to make you anticipate patterns, but I still think it'd be better if it rewarded you for reacting on the fly instead of anticipating.

Really enjoy the weapon upgrading too, and ofc materia is as perfect as ever. I do wonder how it'll be handled in the future games as far as if anything carries over.

It's kind of nuts how well they've fleshed out everything. I don't feel like any of the content they added is bad, and all of the story elements feel natural and not like any kind of bloat. Some people dislike the side quests but since I'm an MMO player I've never been bothered by that kind of thing lol. Even if the objective isn't always unique, it does a nice job of fleshing out the characters and the world you're in so I love it from a lore perspective.

Speaking of lore, I've watched several streams through the end of the game, and I'll be intereted to see Strife's opinion on the ending once you get there. Personally, I really like it, but it seems to be a bit divisive.

I've heard the ending is something, I'm staying away from spoilers myself right now though, I'm getting closer to the end of the game (on chapter 14 now doing side quests before moving on to the end game stuff). Speaking of XIII and XV I mean you can see the clear evolution of those systems into this. The weapon upgrading is very similar to the character progression mechanics in XIII and the stagger system is directly pulled from that. I think what it really shows is it's more about the characters and story than anything. XIII had a garbade story and characters and XV had a lot of problems with the pacing and whatnot. The side quests haven't really bothered me either, they're optional.

I'm with you though, it's surprising how well they managed to pull this off, after all the problems that they encountered during development. Has to give you some hope that they'll be able to turn the rest of the original into something just as amazing.

Also trying not to spoil it for myself, but not playing the game nearly fast enough to beat it anytime soon. I only just got to chapter 9, and I am beginning to remember just how much there actually was to the original first disc. Still having fun with it though.

The first disc was probably more than half the game overall, it's just that you had all the extra mini-games and more FMVs and stuff that had to be included on disc 2 and 3. There was a lot of talk out there before the game was released about how they were going to take just the Midgar section of the game and turn it into a full game, but the Midgar section of the game contains more than a third of the actual dialog and is so heavy in exposition that it's really not that surprising. When you consider that disc one was everything up until the Forgotten Capital it's pretty wild how much story they packed on that first disc.

Coming up on the release of Part 2!
I'm pretty amped for it overall. Part 1 blew away my expectations, which had been admittedly quite low, but I'm really excited to see where they take it in this one. I'm not a hater of the changes made, and it's really something seeing the world brought alive the way it was in such high fidelity.

I loved FF7R myself. One of the best things Square has done in ages and FFXVI also lived up to expectations. Lydeck do you have Discord?

FFXVI is definitely a top 3 minimum for me. Lots culled from FFV which they explicitly stated they looked at as a reference for Summons playing an integral role in the combat system. As for voice-acting and script, it's similar to FFXII in that respect which I hold as the pinnacle of the series' writing (perhaps outside of XIV/ XI).

Loved the Searching for Friends motif all about this track:

This is the standout theme of FFXVI for me, Soken worked in the Theme of Final Fantasy in an interesting way — reminds me of The Dark Knight (Batman) but probably serves to setup Clive more as the staple class we know of in the series):

Oh yeah I straight up loved FFXVI as well. It's not top 3 for me, but it made #6 on my list, passing FFXII which I also really like so that says something. I also agree that Soken's soundtrack is amazing, like I'm somewhat indifferent to FFXIV's soundtrack but XVI just blew me away. There were some specific standout tracks to me as well, especially when they hit in the narrative of the game.
