Thoughts of RPGs This Gen?

Yeah they really need to pull back the focus on the garphics and focus more on the characters and whatnot. It's just gotten to the point with agme development where it costs so much money to make HD games that you have to sell massive amounts of copies to even break even, which just isn't possible with a niche genre like the JRPG.

I don't know if I'd call their narratives “outstanding” (unless we're talking egregiously), but I maintain what I said before: it needs to be an interesting game (this means having an interesting character progression system and battle system). And by extension, competent character development outside of battle as I care more about riveting characters than overarching plot.

One thing I can get behind is the amount of consistently solid games released in the past.

I honestly don't see the JRPG genre really making it much longer in the west, outside of a couple key franchises that will have a presence. Over and over they are released here and fail to move hardly any copies, especially on the handhelds which is where the bulk of JRPG development has headed to cut developmental costs. Pair that with the rise of the WRPG in the past decade and you pretty much have to think that the era of the JRPG is coming to and end. Luckily for us there are SO many great JRPGs that we should have plenty to continue playing for quite awhile.

Yeah. If there's one thing that can be said, it's the amount of variety in the JRPG Library and it's often a result of developers taking risks from both business and development viewpoints. Not much to be said about the other end as it usually abounds with same banal setting/genre and hardly anything imaginative.

Yeah, from the 16bit through the PS2 era they luckily made a shitload of JRPGs, many of which never made it to America but thanks to the hard work of fans have translation patches now. There's plenty out there to play, hell I have a need to play list so long I'll probably never get to them all, lol.

Think I'll pick up FF3 PSP next week as it's the only one I haven't completed to date.

I was thinking about downloading that. I played through most of FF3 on a NES emulator with a english langauge patch like 10 years ago. I wasn't really that fond of it as I remember, I got tired of the grind about halfway through. I expect the remake is a lot less grind. I haven't busted out my PSP in awhile, I need to do that it's by far the best way to play PS1 games. They look really great on it.

Also, at some point soon I really want to play Dragon Quest V. I downloaded the PS2 version + the english translation and burnt it awhile back, I just haven't ever gotten around to starting it.

Speaking of which, I need to finish Vagrant Story and Xenogears. For Xeno, I'm still around that D Block or something lol. As for Vagrant Story, I recall having to run through some interminable tunnel to fight a dragon (which I never bested).

Both of those games are amazing, Xenogears is so great once you start to unravel the story it really takes off. Vagrant Story is right up there too, I know the part you're talking about! lol, I got stuck there too for awhile, it took me several tries to best that damn dragon.

They need to release freakin' Tales of Xillia over here! They've already announced a sequel in Japan, and we don't even have the first. :c I loved Tales of Vesperia, Imma be pissed if one of the few series of JRPGs I like doesn't get a NA release on it's new games!

The Tales series doesn't exactly have a history of being a big selling here in NA, you can't really blame them as I expect localizations keep getting more expensive too.

It's such a shame that they don't sell more, too, because they're such fantastic games.

American audiences, I am disappoint. :c

It really is a shame, sadly it seems all western gamers want to do is…
a) shoot stuff
b) play sports sims
c) hack n' slash

If only story mattered more.

Also, FF13 doesn't “feel” or “sound” like Final Fantasy at all.

It's amazing (not really) how they've gone from XII to XIII, which was a direct response to the philosophy of XII. I say “not really” because the series is known to try out different things despite 1-3, 4-6, and 7-9 being similar when taken from a cursory point of view. For me, its XII gameplay that trumps XIII in every manner (and I liked XII at its release too so I'm not one of those guys who needs to play the most recent to appreciate its predecessor(s).)

As for FFXIV, I wish it were an offline FF.

What would you guys like to see from FFXV?

I can't say that FFXIII didn't 'feel' like FF, that's hard to put into context because the series has been known to have vastly different settings. From the pure fantasy/steampunk settings of 1-6 & 9 (and to an extent 12) to the more modern feel of 7, 8, 10, and 13. If you mean 'feel' in terms of how it played, yes I agree there, since it was so damn linear, although I thought it did play fairly close to 10 outside of combat.

The sound is a nobrainer, FF12 didn't sound like FF either. And while I'm on that, FF12 is pretty much just Vagrant Story 2. Is it a bad game? Not at all, and it did include some of the FF themes, but to me that will always be Vagrant Story 2.

As for the future of FF. I'd like them to return to the fantasy/steampunk roots again as they did after 7 & 8.

Didn't give a care for its high tech world, but the other half below was all right. The director was feeling himself a bit too much when he tried to blame James Cameron's Avatar for ripping off the setting. Joke or no, a little suspicious to even mention that.

I was a bit reluctant to get that point across above, but there isn't a rote formula FF follows. I'd like something that's a cross between the Industrial Revolution and our Interwar years, but I don't want to see them “return” to anything specifically. And if anything, something more like FF5 is what I'm clamoring for where gravitas is exchanged for something carefree.

XIII basically inverted the role of the light warriors from previous FFs in an attempt to usher them into a grey area. It's also irritating how they have ridiculous terms for gods, deities, and “light warriors”, as to suggest by using these terms that they're somehow nuanced from past FFs. No matter how it's spun, their concepts and ideas will always be transparent to me.

I really would like a return to the steampunk stylings of FF6 & FF9. Atmospherically those two really nailed it. I don't expect to see them return to a true fantasy of the earlier games, even with the light steampunk aspects they had. The WRPG really has fantasy locked up, so I think that's why the focus this gen has been on the sci-fi/cyberpunk areas.

Kind of sucks because the worlds are often unimaginative. Same old design, lore, and vapid aesthetics.

Strangely enough, when I played FF12 I always got the feeling that it's music and the setting of the game was a throwback to the older games. At least I got that feeling while playing them.
