LISTEN INTRODUCTION
The listen ability is one of the most basic, allowing your own character to hear what is going on around him, from the sounds of his/her environment, to those who are traversing through it. It can be used to listen in on conversations, to hear the sound of someone attempting to sneak up behind your character for an attack, or even to pin point the exact or relative location of a unseen enemy, among other things. At times listen checks may be made by the DM so as to retain the element of surprise for the players if they fail the check. In the case of a character or NPC attempting to be quiet, the listen ability will be directly opposed by the move silently ability check of said target(s). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A times when a group of players are all together in the same place and have the same chance to hear the same thing, the DM will usually make the check for all of them with one roll. Characters who know the advanced ability alertness gain a bonus to listen checks based on their level in that ability, on top of their normal ranks. |
