DOWNTOWN ULYSSES
Downtown Ulysses Oregon is located on the southern bank of the Alexander River, nestled in tightly between Old Ulysses to the east and the industrial West Ulysses to, the west. Downtown Ulysses as it is now, was early on the residential district of the city, prior to the large building boom of the 1950s onward, which quickly spread into this region of the town, though some construction had started earlier, most prominently the Oregonian hotel which was completed in 1937 just on the eastern edge of downtown. Over the past 35 years Downtown Ulysses has grown at an unusually high rate, with many buildings going up in the same years to form the commercial and residential center that it is now. Packed with stores, nightlife, as well as city and state government offices it has become a growing center of activity in the American North West and appears that it will be for some time to come. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MCINTOSH OFFICE COMPLEX
Only officially completed last year, the McIntosh Office Complex is comprised of five buildings of varying heights all calling the same block home. The center of the complex, the Henry J. McIntosh Building, which was finally opened last fall, is the tallest building in the city, towering 690 feet above the streets below and home to 64 stories packed with offices for many of the regions biggest companies not to mention other facilities, centering on tourism.

POLICE HEADQUARTERS
Another new building complex in the Downtown district, the Ulysses Police Headquarters is a modern office building that has been given the task of centralizing the police force for Ulysses which before the grand opening of this building was fractured and unorganized through out the city. Also serving as the downtown precinct it’s a fully featured police department, hosing a garage for vehicles and a jail in the basement levels.

BAMBU
For most of Ulysses’ life it was known as a hard working town, dominated by the heavy industries that operated in and around the area. All that began to change in the late seventies, first with the music scene and then the art scene which sprung up as a counter culture movement, with the posh club Bambu a cherry on this sundae. Known as the place to be if you’re anyone, it strikes a clear difference against the norm in this city.

ULYSSES CONVENTION CENTER
Part of the building boom of the last decade, the new government complex also included plans for what is now the Ulysses Convention center, a massive 400,000 square foot space just off the center of the city where some of the biggest conventions will surely flock too. Including full amenities, a commercial center, and offices and planning spaces in a connected building it’s been praised as a prime example of good city planning.

THE OREGONIAN
Upon it’s completion in 1937 the Oregonian was heralded as one of the finest hotels on the west cost, and perhaps the nicest in the North West. Featured elegant interior architecture and decor which still reflects the time of it’s opening it is still one of the most popular hotels in the region. The building, ten stories tall, features many rooms, a five star restaurant in the lobby, as well as a large ballroom for events and conventions.

CROVER’S PAWN
Originally opened in the early seventies, Crover’s Pawn has quickly grown into one of the largest commercial establishments in downtown Ulysses. Having recently moved to a new space, which is three times the floor size as their original location, Crover’s packed full of items, and is now regarded as one of the best places to acquire anything from jewelry, firearms, electronics, and especially musical instruments in the entire city.

SMITTY’S PUMP STATION
It’s little news to anyone how the car epitomizes the American way of life, and it was never more so then the 1960s which Smitty first opened his pump station in what is now downtown Ulysses. As the city has grown around Smitty’s it has also evolved into a modern gas station, but still manages to encompass that old time charm that many try to replicate but never can, perhaps it’s because to this day Smitty will pump gas for you. |
