  Chapter 1: The Exam

Jonas waited patiently as the girl cadets exited the transport, taking the brief opportunity to watch them exit the vehicle. As the transport emptied he scooted out of his seat and stepped out into the mid-day sun. It was warm and Jonas was struck by the duality he was witnissing, a war was waging oversea but here it was peaceful and calm. He wondered if Galbadia really did present a risk to the entire world once more but shook away the thought, he could not afford to get off track today.
” Cadets form a line please. ”A stern but feminine voice said as Quistis Trepe, head instructor and famous SeeD, walked into view dressed in complete SeeD regalia. ” I'll be splitting the six of you into two groups which each will be accompanied by myself during the exam. This is serious business, I have eight more exams to administer after this group, no funny business. ” She finished speaking as she shot a glace towards Jonas, clearly his past was not forgotten.
” Oh great, of course we get instructor Trepe. ” Jonas wispered towards Gil, who he had come up behind and wrapped an arm around in jest. ” She failed me last time, I'm kinda surprised to see her, it must be pretty damn important for her to be escorting all of us. ” He finished as he released his hold on Gil, hoping that he would loosen up.
” First group, Jonas, Gilead, and Gwenllian step forward. You three will be entering first, you have five mintues to prepair yourselves. ” Instructor Trepe spoke before signalling to the others to wait in the transport for the next round.
Jonas looked a Gil, releaved that they would be partnered but was unsure about the tall dark haired cadet Gwenllian who he had never actually seen in action. She was quiet, and he always thought rather attractive but she had always kept to herself.
” Do you know anything about Gwen? ” Jonas spoke, thumbing towards the cadet they had been paired with who stood a few meters away prepping her nunchaku.

Gil waited impatiently a short distance away from the transport, trying to contain his desire to just charge into the Fire Cavern. Thankfully it didn't take too long for the others to exit the vehicle, after which Instructor Trepe quickly ordered them all to form a line. Jonas didn't seem very happy that she was their instructor for this, and the piercing gaze she directed at his partner made it clear the feeling was mutual. “If you didn't flirt with your instructors this wouldn't happen, Jonas.” Gil stated flatly, simply ignoring the arm Jonas had around him. It was better not to risk anything that might encourage him.

“What did you–” Gil started to speak, only to come to an abrupt halt when Instructor Trepe's voice cut through the air once more. They were actually going to be paired together, something that came as a small relief to him. In his eyes it never seemed to work out very well when he was paired with others–he could never shake the feeling that he had to hold back around strangers, if only to avoid accidentally hurting them with his wild fighting style. Jonas was the only person he had met that didn't get in his way in a fight, always seeming to be just where they could best combine their efforts without obstructing one another. “–ah, nevermind. Why would I know her?”

  Chapter 1: The Exam

” Oh you know, I just thought maybe the recluses sometimes might say something to each other in passing ” Jonas responded to Gil's answer, wondering about their partner's abilities and hoping that she wouldn't hold them back.
Feeling confident about his readiness Jonas simply waited as the five minutes passed, taking in the view. Jonas remembered the first time he had come here, his first attempt at the SeeD exam, he was completely unprepared for what had transpired but he felt different this time around.
” Alright, your five minutes are up follow me cadets. ” Instructor Trepe broke the silence, before simply walking away in the direction of the cavern entrance.
” Okay, let's go. It's hot in there, trust me watch your step and just try to focus on moving through the cavern and sticking to the path if possible. ” Jonas spoke, attempting to give his fellow cadets an idea of what was to come, and warning them against making the same mistake he had made his first go around. Before setting off he watched as Gwen started off ahead of them, she didn't seem stressed at all. 'Maybe we're going to hold HER back..' Jonas thought as he gave Gil a playful shove forward before setting off after the two women.
The entrance to the Fire Cavern was an irregular opening in a tall rugged cliff face. The entrance was wide at it;s opening but it narrowed as you moved though it. The heat from the inside grew as Jonas turned his body to squeeze through the final opening into the natural cave. The ceiling opened and vaulted high above his head, the glimmer of crystal shimmering in the natural fire light that gave the cavern it's name. It was hot, uncomfortably hot just as he remembered, but how could it not be with liquid magma flowing around them to the sides of the curving pathway.
” Cadets, your exam begins now. I will not aide you from this point on, I'm only here to watch and score your progress. You have thrity minutes to traverse to the end of the cavern and back. ” Instructor Trepe said calmly, making way on the path for the cadets to pass her and head off into the unknown.

“I wouldn't know.” Gil tersely replied as his eyes fell upon the entrance to the Fire Cavern. An urge to blindly charge into the cave on his own, to prove that he didn't need anyone had begun to gnaw at him. Tempting as the thought was, he felt they were going to be judged on more than just physical ability. In an effort to rid himself of any further temptations he removed his weapon from its place on his back, focusing his attention on making sure it was in prime condition for the trial ahead of them.

The single-edged blade was just over a meter in length with a curved tip, and a base that extended forward and ended in a flat base–clearly meant to serve as a mock handguard. The base featured an ornate etching, with a fiery patterned engraving stretching nearly halfway up the back of the blade. It bore a hilt tightly bound in cured leather, with a chain tassel hanging from the pommel–with an intricately carved icon at the end, which resembled the mythological phoenix. Gil had never seen a more impressive weapon in all his years, yet he still hadn't thought of a name for the blade either… something that he felt the sword rightfully deserved.

Gil snapped back to reality when the instructor called out to them, informing them their time was up and they were to follow her. Casually he hefted the weapon onto his left shoulder, doubling his normal pace in order to catch up to the others as they made their way into the Fire Cavern. It was hot inside the cave, though it wasn't too disconcerting–though as they ventured deeper into the caves he found the heat grew worse with each passing step until they finally entered the primary cave system.

“Let's go,” Gil ordered the group with an almost uncharacteristic grin, his eyes burning in anticipation of what they might face further within. He took a few steps before pausing for a moment, checking the area for any potential draw points before moving on. If at all possible he wanted more magic before they reached whatever the primary objective of the test was; no doubt it would be something threatening, else this wouldn't prove to be much of a test for the group.

  Chapter 1: The Exam

He heat of the fire cavern was already getting to Jonas, he remembered how off putting it had been the first time he had taken this exam. Clearing his head he nodded to Gil and started down the path, knowing all to well where and what it would lead to. The path they followed was curvy, twisting and turning every few meters with very few straight areas. The ground was charged, much black or reflective obsidian which danced with the waves of fire that leaped from the flowing magma.
” There are some pretty wicked beasts in here, so everyone been on guard. ” Jonas said, breaking the brief silence, his gaze fixed on Gwen as he spoke. Jonas knew what Gil would bring to the table, he had seen him in action many times and had venture outside of the Garden with him in the past, taking the road to Balamb where they had fought many wild beasts. ” Up ahead, look a draw point. ” Jonas broke the silence once more as the dancing helix caught his gaze. His sword ever ready, Jonas made haste towards the draw point, outstretching his hand to draw in the stored natural magic from this place. ” It's fire, maybe not that useful in here but later on it will be. ” He commented.
Jonas stepped back, making room for the others to take their turns at the draw point. Looking away his eyes caught sight of something moving in the distance, their first test. The floating fiery creature was like a small burning sun, though it's face and pointed head were less sunlike. Jonas knew instantly what the creature was, a Bomb, called that for their habit of self distructing if combat was not going their way.    ” Trouble ahead, it's a Bomb. ” Jonas spoke, pointing with his blade in the direction of their foe. Before he could finish speaking Gwen had moved, darting ahead towards the creature, smashing into it with a fierce blow from her nunchaku. ” god damn. ” Jonas said looking towards Gil before taking off in direction of combat.
” Jonas seems to be taking a leadership roll, Squall was right about him. ” Quistis spoke to herself, watching from some ten meters behind the cadets. ” The question will be can he keep Gil in line, if not failing him before could have been a major mistake. ” Se finished as combat began in the distance.

Gil quietly approached the draw point after the others had turned away from it, focusing upon the natural magic stored within before casually flicking his wrist and drawing it out. As he turned away from it he noticed the creature in the distance, a bomb, but before he could do anything Gwen rushed toward the creature without so much as a single word to the party. “Jonas, don't–” Gil tried to deter his friend from a brash course of action, but it was in vain as soon enough he too charged forward. 'I suppose it's unfair think he could overcome his weakness for women.' he thought sourly while the other two began to launch their own assault on the beast.

As they attacked he held his weapon at the ready, thinking over his options while trying to resist the urge to cut loose and attack. Gil decided to put his own bloodlust aside for the time being, holding up his left hand as he began to focus upon the mystical energy within the bomb. Gil drew from the creature quickly, drawing the magic into his own resevoir of spells. It was always refreshing to be able to use his own innate talent as a sorceror, though he did wish could use his full potential without risking exposure for what he truly was.

  Chapter 1: The Exam

Jonas moved fast, freeing his blade from it's harness as he did so. The path ahead was rocky and rough, but he made quick work bridging them gap between himself and the bomb. Watching Gwen, he was impressed but even he wasn't so gung-ho about rushing into combat, he hoping that this wouldn't effect the challenge to come. As Gwen moved back, having landed her attack Jonas saw his moment to strike.
” Gwen step back! ” Jonas shouted as he twisted his body around building up power as he pulled his body three hundred and sixty degrees around outstreching his blade as he rotated to build up force. The blade struck teh creature hard and Jonus leaped back hoping to be ready for the floating menace if it decided to hurl itself into him.
” We need to dispatch this thing quick, it could do some serious damage to all of us if it kamekazes ” Jonas said as Gil joined them, smartly taking the moment to draw a few spells before they would finish the creature. A few seconds past and the creature had failed to react to the double attack which Jonas knew only meant one thing. As thethought crossed his mind the bomb began to grow in size boosting itself up as it prepared to blow, he knew they would likely only have another minutes or so before it would blow.

Once the bomb began to grow in size, preparing to self-destruct upon the group, he burst into motion without a moment's hesitation. Gil didn't want to risk their chance at passing the exam before they had even truly gotten underway–it was time for him to cut loose. As he neared his intended target a grin of audacity began to creep into his expression, and combined with the crimson in his eyes gave his expression an almost terrifying appeal. “Out of the way,” he coldly warned the others as he came within striking distance. They weren't likely to be in the path of this particular strike, but his better nature had won out and he decided not to chance it this time.

Once he was ready he placed all his weight on his right foot before swinging down violently, carrying the blow through as he turned his body full circle using his left. As the swing of his weapon was carried through it just barely scratched across the stone of the cavern floor, creating a flurry of sparks before it came into the air in an overhead arc. Once more he turned pivoted on his right foot to bring the weapon crashing down full circle into the bomb. It was a flourishing technique, but it was an attack that allowed him to place his full weight behind the blow.

  Chapter 1: The Exam

Jonas leapt back as Gil unleashed his blow on the bomb with frightening power and speed, something that did not surprise him at all. 'Same old Gil, man he's got some impressive attack power' Jonas thought as he watched the bomb wobble after the blow. Not seconds later Gwen was back at it unloaded a powerful strike of her own on the creature sending into a wobble once again, Jonas knew that this was his chance to end it all before the situation risked getting dangerous.
” It's like a game of ball! ” Jonas said with a laugh as he pushed off, building up the speed as he lunged towards the creature which his blade, taking a swipe as he ran past. The Bomb wobbled for a moment as if it was going to hold on but then feel to the ground, finished. ” Come on, no time to wait around, they time us on these things and I want to impress them. ” Jonas said, as he breathed heavily, he was starting to enjoy this.
The cavern didn't widen as he started off again, following the curving path as he moved forward. The heat of this place was making just the task of walking tough on his body and he began to feel more fatigued than he had expected, even though he had come though here before. He had forgotten the physical toll that this place took on him, he had always focused on his failure and he now wondered his his fatigue before might have lead to that.
” Hold up. ” Jonas said quietly as he came to a stop, point ahead of the group to where two tri-winged creatures were flying, their odd mammalian faces at the center of the spiraled wings. Jonas knew exactly what they were, remembering the chapter in class about them, they were called Buels. As his memories served him they shouldn't be to much of a challenge, so he started forward slowly.
” Amazing, Squall was right about their combat abilities. ” Quistis said to herself as he followed behind, keeping an eye on them as they approached the Buels.

Gil still bore that audacious grin as he observed the aftereffects of his attack, the bomb wobbling wildly from the massive power behind his attack. Shortly after it was struck once more, by the girl called Gwen, and then Jonas lunged at the beast with a jovial laugh at its pathetic wobbling following their attacks. Once his attack struck the beast it feebly attempted to hang on, but then collapsed onto the floor below. It wasn't a difficult fight, but Gil still felt that they shouldn't push their luck and wildly engage mobs like that. There was no telling what they might encounter in the future, or what such careless attacks might result in.

A reminder that they were being timed was all the incentive Gil required to continue along the path, hefting his massive sword back onto his shoulder as they set out. Ahead of him Jonas appeared to be suffering from the effects of the intense heat in the cavern, something that Gil could sympathize with. It was so hot in the cavern that just breathing in left a burning sensation in his lungs. In addition to that the stifling heat had him sweating profusely. If they were to stay here too much longer the effects would only grow worse too–though it appeared to him that Jonas wasn't handling it nearly as well as he.

Jonas then told them to hold and drew their attention to the beasts on the path ahead. Gil nodded his head to confirm that he had seen them before speaking his mind on the beasts. “Finish one off, then we should use one as a draw point to stock up before we head further in.”

  Chapter 1: The Exam

Jonas stopped for a moment, wiping sweat from his forehead as he listened to Gil's strategy and nodded back at his friend. He took a second, looking towards Gwen who acted like he wasn't there and simply walked past her nunchaku in hand, her silence intrigued Jonas. As he started towards the two monsters Jonas remembered that they tended to contain several different elemental spells, He thought Gil must have remembered that too, so his strategy would be perfect.
” You seem to like to swing that sword of yours around, so why don't you put one of these things down. ” Jonas said to Gil with a laugh. ” After all, I need to stock up on some spells too before we reach the end of this cavern… trust me. ” Jonas finished as he took his stance. Ahead Gwen had already started assaulting the first Buel, he hoped that she would stick to Gil's plan but if not he was going to get a few spells out of the creatures before her and Gil could put them down. Holding his palm out and concentrating suddenly a bright light flashed and Jonas could feel the new magic surging within him.

Gil flashed a bloodthirsty smile as he approached the creatures, his weapon at the ready. The other had already struck the beast by the time he arrived, having moved in a leisurely jog in order to conserve his energy. Once he was within range he hefted the weapon into the air, holding the heavy weapon with a single arm. Then he swung the blade in a heavy diagonal arc across the beast's wings before returning the weapon to its resting place upon his shoulder; he didn't dare back up yet–if it survived that brutal slash he intended to advance into more devastating attacks.

  Chapter 1: The Exam

Jonas watched from a safe distance as Gil moved in close for attack, making a nice swipe with his blade that caught the creature across two of it's three wings. Jonas noticed the creature bob up and down in the air slightly as it took the blow, it was hurt. Feeling a burst of energy he fought of the fatigue caused by the extreme heat and took three long quick steps into the melee, pushing the tip of his own blade out to pierce into the core of the injured creature. As he pulled his blade back the Beul bobbed up quickly but then fell swiftly to the ground at their feet.
” Quick you two, draw some magic I'll hold this other Beul off to give you some space! ” Jonas said loud enough for Gil and Gwen to understand before stepping into the path of the second Buel which was ready to attack. Bracing himself Jonas lifted his blade up across his body hoping that it would deflect some of the oncoming attack. Moments later Jonas watched the beul begin to spin wildly before hurling towards him like a cut loose swap blade. His blade caught some of the attack but the creatures force pushed through and nicked him slightly.
” Teamwork, this is new. ” Quistis spoke to herself as he watched, taking mental notes of the performance the three cadets we putting together.

Gil could hear the sound of footsteps as his friend closed in upon the monster, which inspired him to reflexively back off from the beast. After he stepped away Jonas closed the gap and attacked the beast, thrusting his weapon forward and piercing into the beast. There wasn't a doubt in his mind that the attack would fail to kill it, so he turned his attentions to the next creature only to be cut short when his friend volunteered to handle this one. “If you say so.” Gil replied bitterly, stifling his battle fervor for now. Much as he might want to run wild it was important to at least make it clear that he could work in a team if necessary.

While his friend kept the beast occupied Gil slowly lifted his left hand, the motion helping him in the mental process of tapping into the beast's magical reserves. Once he had a grasp on the magic within he began to exert his will over it, taking hold of as many spells as possible before drawing them out. In that moment the magic became visible swirling orbs of energy that flew through the air before merging into his internal reserves. It hadn't occurred to him until then that his own method of drawing magic might very well be fundamentally different from that of normal people; not that he could simply ask given the fact that nobody knew the truth about him.

  Chapter 1: The Exam

Jonas staggered back, slipping for a moment but releasing his double handed grip on his blade to thrown his right hand under him before he hit the ground. He rebounded quickly, the heat of the Fire Cavern's floor lightly burning his palm and fingers as he pushed himself upwards again. Before he could regain his focus he watched as Gwen jumped in front of him laying a massive blow from her nunchaku into the Beul which sent it to the ground in front of the party.
” Nice one. ” Jonas chuckled as he brushed his pants legs off, still feeling the oppressive heat on his legs which had brushed the floor of the cavern as well. ” I'll make sure to repay you for that. ” He finished speaking, sporting a goofy smile.
” No thanks. ” Gwen responded sternly before walking away from Jonas and Gil, heading deeper into the cavern.
” She's no fun. ” Jonas said as he turned to Gil, a look of disappointment on his fac. ” Come on, lets move… ” He finished speaking again, motioning for Gil to follow as he started after Gwen.
As they traveled deeper into the winding corridors of the Fire Cavern the heat became more and more oppressive, Jonas knew that they would soon reach the final chamber and along with it the final test of the exam, one that he felt readyf or this time.

Gil stood back and watched as they finished the beast off, with a swing from Jonas' weapon followed shortly by a bash from Gwen's nunchaku. With a fair amount of effort he hefted his massive weapon into the air and brought it to rest upon his right shoulder. “If you say so,” Gil replied curtly before heading down the passage just a few steps behind the others. It didn't show but the heat was starting to wear on him. Every part of his body was starting to feel heavier, the superheated air was making breathing hard, and he was covered in a sheen of sweat. Yet still he refused to succumb to the heat and back out now; the goal was within reach, and he had no intentions of dropping out just before the finish line. “Jonas, did you bring any water?” Gil asked flatly, having failed to bring something to rehydrate himself–a fact he sorely regretted.

  Chapter 1: The Exam

In the distance as the twisting path lead them around towering stalagmites which shot upwards into the air like miniature mountains the cave seemed to come to an end. The ceiling curved downward, the jagged rock wall meeting the ground and the path ahead of them. To either side of the path the liquid magma like lake pooled, spitting up flames as the liquid hot rock rippled and moved as if it was a living thing. An irregular opening was cut in the rock wall where the path met it, darkness loomed through it and what was on the other side could not be seen.
” Sadly I didn't, everything happened in such a hurry today that I wasn't as prepared as I wanted to be. ” Jonas spoke in reply, wishing that he had brought water for them all.
” Here. ” Gwen's voice echoed through the chamber as he held out a bottle of water towards Gil, and speaking nothing else of it, but motioning to allow Jonas to drink from it as well.
Jonas nodded a thank you, turning back for a moment to spy instructor Trepe. Jonas knew what lay beyond this chamber, and while he wanted to share the knowledge with his classmates he knew that it wouldn't do any good, as only witnessing it with ones own eyes would really paint the picture. Before moving towards the irregular opening Jonas moved towards the familiar purple helix that was a draw point and in a flash of light felt the surge of energy that imbued him with knowledge of magic.

“Thank you.” Gil offered his gratitude, reaching out to take the bottle of water from her before unceremoniosuly bringing it to his lips. As he did so he caught Jonas making way to a nearby draw point out of the corner of his eye. Once his friend returned the mage proffered the water for Jonas before making way over to the nearby draw point. Once he reached it he lifted up his left handle and coaxed the magic out, directing its energies into himself before returning to the group. A cursory glance at the irregular opening that would lead them further into the cavern yielded a strange feeling that it was best not to continue onward. It didn't matter to him though–what awaited them stood in the way of the path laid out for him. “I'm going to cut loose this time,” he announced to the others by way of warning, hoping that Jonas might be able to exert some control over the new member of their party and keep her from getting in the way.

  Chapter 1: The Exam

Jonas moved towards the irregular cut opening, turning his body sideways to slide through. The darkness surrounded him, pulling him in deeper, only a speck of light visible in the distance. Jonas twisted and turned as he squeezed through the tight passage, the lone light growing as he moved closer. Jonas was silent for much of the trek, readying himself for the battle ahead, fully aware of how hard it would be.
” You'll have to. ” Jonas finally broke the silence, his voice cutting through the silence, letting Gil know that he and Gwen would both have to give it their all if they expected to win the battle to come.
As Jonas reached the end of the passage he took a deep breath, the heat pushing on his shoulders, almost asking him to just give in. Exhaling he stepped out, the now familiar light from the liquid hot magma hurting his eyes for a moment. Rubbing his eyes he removed his hands to reveal the inner most chamber of the Fire Cavern, The chamber was like a massive dome, the rock walls at least 100 meters in diameter but most of that space was covered by a lake of magma. A small path lead out into the center of the domed cavern where one large rocky but mostly flat island of land stood above the lake of fire.
” Let's go. ” Jonas said as he started down the lone path.

As they continued through the irregular pathway it became more and more difficult to maneuver through it, his massive weapon making it rather frustrating. Soon enough they emerged from the passage, and he breathed a sigh of relief. They had come into a massive domed structure, with a lone pathway that stretched out to a small island surrounded by a lake of magma. That strange sensation from before hit him once more, but this time he pushed it away without a second thought. Nothing could stop him from pressing onward.

Whatever it was that they were here for would likely reveal itself on the island ahead, and it made his heart beat faster in anticipation. Jonas believed that there would be no other choice for them to all fight to the best of their ability; he desperately hoped that was the case. If he truly wanted to test his limits, and exceed them, he had to fight more powerful opponents.
