  Chapter 2: Die Walküre

The alarm sounded loud, it's siren like blare grasping Jonas from the depths of sleep and with a thunderous tug pulling him back into the conscious world. His body ached all over as he turned attempting to reach across his body towards the desk that separated his bunk from Gil's. He groaned in pain as his muscles fought him, reminding him of the fight he had the day before, like a punch to the gut. His hand trembled as he smashed it down atop the siren silencing it's screams. Jonas sat up and looked ahead where his dress uniform hung from his closet. Today he was a SeeD.
” Gil you awake? ” He spoke before looking, assuming that his bunk mate was indeed already awake and likely already dressed and ready, that's how it always was. ” When we gotta be at the docks in Balamb again? ” He asked as he tried to recall Squall's speech from the night before, his brain still hazy from sleep. He knew they would be traveling to Balamb, to the docks on their own, then they would meet up with the SeeD units and cross the sea to nearby Dollet.

A blurred memory, or a twisted dream? It was difficult to tell the difference. An eerie mist hung heavy in the air, obscuring all but the immediate area. Strangely he could see a shadowy figure through the fog, its back turned to him. Whatever it was struck him with an indelible sense of fear, and he instinctively took a step back. All of the sudden chaos erupted all around him in the blink of an eye; fires sparked to life, blasts in the distance shook the earth beneath his feet, and crippling pain tore through him. Then without any warning he woke up, and desperately scrambled to sit upright. As clarity began to return to him the finer details of the dream faded away, until only a phantom pain remained–following the paths of the scars that decorated his body.
It was rather unlikely that he would be able to get back to sleep after that nightmare, so he took one of his books from the desk and began to read. If nothing else it would serve to distract him from dwelling on that dream. For nearly an hour Gil continued to read, until the alarm came to life and Jonas stirred from his deep slumber. With a sigh of frustration he noted the page, and gently placed the book on the side of the desk. “Yes, I'm awake.” Gil replied dryly while getting to his feet. “We don't have to be at the docks for a few more hours, but we should make sure we're ready before that. We're SeeD now, after all.”

  Chapter 2: Die Walküre

Gil's rather blunt delivery of the facts seemed to take Jonas off guard in his still hazing return to the conscious world. It was the first time he had been called a SeeD, and it felt strange and sounded odd to his ears; Jonas wondered if he would become accustomed to the idea that he was SeeD.
” It'll take us at least an hour to get to Balamb on foot, I can't imagine any of the transports are going to be available if they're still rushing to finish the exams today. ” Jonas said, remembering his talk with Instructor Trepe before the ceremony the night before, her genuine happiness that he had graduated and then the comment that she still had many more exams to conduct and was quite far behind given the situation. ” We should probably get ready and get out of here, I want to pick something up on the way out. ” Jonas confessed as he stood from his bed and began to dress himself in his SeeD uniform, finding a certain pride in putting it on for the first time ever.

Gil rose to his feet with another sigh, and made his way to his closet. Once he was there he pulled open the door, and simply stared at his SeeD uniform on its hangar. It didn't look like a combat-friendly outfit, rather it seemed to be more akin to something one would wear for a formal ceremony. “I hate this thing.” Gil announced half-heartedly. All the same he still removed the garment from the closet, and quickly changed into it. Once he was finished dressing he folded his old attire, and set it neatly on the foot of his bed before he knelt down, and retrieved his greatsword from its case. With renewed vigor he fit the weapon into its holster, and fit the straps over his tunic.
“I'm ready when you are,” Gil said calmly while turning toward his friend. For a moment he eyed Jonas suspiciously, but then simply shrugged and started out the door. “so let's pick up whatever it is you want. Just don't chat anyone up, or I'll leave you behind.” Gil's tone of voice was playful, but at the same time seemed to carry a muted promise.

  Chapter 2: Die Walküre

Jonas nodded as Gil passed him moving towards the door, quickly falling in line behind his friend as they exited the dorm room into a long hallway with many identical doors. It only then dawned on Jonas that upon their return they would likely be assigned new quarters, in the SeeD housing area, or even permitted to live outside of the garden in Balamb. The idea was bittersweet. More room and privacy were both promising, though he had spent much of his time as a cadet, several years, in one room. He was going to miss it.
” It won't take long, I promise. ” Jonas replied to Gil as he moved past him in the hallway, looking back at his doorway one last time before turning to exit into the long columned causeway that connected the dorms to the Garden proper. The air outside was brisk, though not totally unpleasant. The morning light darted through the columns and danced across the paved path. ” I just need to stop by the library before we leave. ” Jonas continued as they neared the garden, drifting back into step with his friend as announced their first destination.

Gil couldn't help but notice as Jonas paused to turn back to the doorway, but was too preoccupied to think much of it. In just a few hours they would be deployed on their first official missions as SeeD–into a battlefield. At the mere thought of the challenges that lie ahead his blood began to boil, and a devious grin spread wide across his lips. A moment later Gil forced the idea out of mind in an attempt to regain his composure, in the hopes that nobody had seen his idiotic expression. “I'm worse than Jonas, sometimes.” Gil muttered in frustration. It was difficult enough to maintain control in the heat of battle, he didn't need to run wild in his everyday life too.
When his friend fell back into step and spoke up Gil nearly jumped out of his skin. You're going to read a book?” Gil quirked an eyebrow, and stared blankly for a moment to emphasize the statement. “Maybe you need to visit the infirmary.”

  Chapter 2: Die Walküre

” Uh, yeah a 'book'. ” Jonas replied to Gil's remark, his voice breaking for a moment, as he passed by him along the columned corridor that would connect them back to the Garden proper.
Jonas moved swiftly, hoping to avoid any other conversation about his destination until they had arrived, he felt no need to explain himself further. The Garden, like the night before, seemed desolate in comparison to the normal hustle and bustle of activity that could could be found within. Jonas took notice of this fact as he walked, the heavy clicking of his boots against the tiled floor reverberating through the massive inner circle of the Garden, only partially masked by the calming sound of water flowing all around them.
” It's eerie in here when it's so empty. ” Jonas said aloud as he briefly checked behind him to see if Gil had kept close. ” I'll uh, just be a minute. ” Jonas spoke up again as they reached the spoke that would lead into the Garden library, wondering if Gil would follow him in or not.

A slight break in Jonas' voice caught his attention. There was definitely something more to all of this, and the fact that Jonas was trying to hide it from him only sparked Gil's curiosity–and his natural affinity toward mistrust. In utter silence he trailed close behind his friend as they walked through the near empty hallways. It was a little strange to be able to hear the sound of their boots on the tile floor, the gentle flow of the water, rather than the chaotic din of students going about their daily routines.
“Yeah.” Gil firmly agreed, close enough behind Jonas that it would almost be a violation of his friend's personal space. A faint hint of mischief flashed through the crimson of Gil's eyes. “I'll come with you,” Gil declared with a wry smile. “after all what kind of friend would I be if I didn't encourage your new hobby?”

  Chapter 2: Die Walküre

Jonas let out a low sigh as Gil announced that he would be going with him, he had assumed that this would be the case all along, though he had done all he could to prevent it.
” Yeah, alright. ” He replied with little vigor as he moved through the corridor that connected the garden to the exterior library.
The sunlight caught the pillars of the passageway differently then those that connected to the dorm, casting few shadows in the early morning sun, though Jonas knew they would grow as the nearby star moved across the daytime sky. The library was reasonably sized, with several rows of large oaken shelving units partitioning the space. Directly to his right the counter curved towards the wall, behind which a single student volunteer stood. The student nodded at Gil and Jonas, Jonas replied with the same gesture as he passed. Jonas moved through the rows of shelving towards the back of the room, spotting a familiar face seated at one of many study terminals located there.
” Yo, Boaz you got those.. uh.. Weapons Monthly magazines I asked for? ” He announced himself to the seated cadet.
” Weapons Monthly? Wha— ” Boaz started as he swiveled in his chair, stopping short as his saw Gil standing behind Jonas, his face showing little surprise. ” Uh, yeah I got them. Here. ” He corrected himself as he handed a wrapped parcel to Jonas, who had already slipped a 50 Gil note from his pocket and thrust it towards the cadet.
” Thanks, be seeing you. ” Jonas was short, grasping the parcel and quickly turning back towards the rows of oaken shelves.
As Jonas turned he felt a tug at his leg and before he could look to see what he had caught he found himself falling. His mind blanked as reflex took over, Jonas released the parcel and outstretched his open palms in order to catch himself before he hit the ground. He watched as he came to a halt and the parcel landed and through the force of the fall opened. The magazines within loosened and slid across the floor, the farthest one coming to rest at the foot of a twisting purple helix that was tucked in a far corner. The cover read “Girl Next Door”.

Gil caught the exasperated sigh, but said nothing of it. Jonas was seemingly resigned to fate as they traveled through the Garden hallway which would lead them to the library. As much as Gil might enjoy the early morning view he was far too fixated upon discovering what brought Joans to the library to pay it any mind. When they reached the library Gil offered the student volunteer behind the counter a curt nod as they moved through the various bookshelves to the back of the room. Another student could be seen at the back, seated at one of the study terminals.
As the pair conducted their business Gil folded his arms, content to observe for now. When it was over a fifty gil note had been exchanged for a wrapped parcel, the contents of which were supposedly Weapons Monthly magazines. Jonas quickly turned to leave, but Gil had other plans in mind. With a sigh of frustration Gil held out his left leg and caught it on Jonas' own. Without any warning Jonas began to trip, and let go of the package to brace for the fall. When the box hit the floor it broke open and the magazines inside spilled out. A mere glance made it clear that these were not the latest issues of Weapons Monthly.
Silently he made his way to the draw point at the far end, and casually drew the magic within it into his stockpile. Afterwards he bent down and picked up the magazine–an issue of 'Girl Next Door'. Gil returned to Jonas in silence and held the magazine up as he stared daggers at Jonas. “I suppose you could consider this a kind of Weapons Monthly,” Gil paused for a breath. “but I don't need a partner who acts like a cadet.” Gil bluntly declared and dropped the magazine to the floor before walking away.

  Chapter 2: Die Walküre

A rush of ignominious shame came over Jonas as he lay flat out, his eyes unable to meet Gil's as he spoke. Jonas glanced across the floor at the Girl Next Door magazine which Gil had dropped before casually exiting the library in his usual phlegmatic manner. Jonas knew that Gil disapproved of his weakness for the opposite sex, always focused, his eyes always on perfection. Yet he simply could not deny his base desires, no matter how much Gil's stoicism influenced him.
” Aw shit, come on man. ” Jonas found himself calling out, drawing an ireful glare from the cadet who manned the library checkout counter. ” Yeah I know, quiet. ” He said in a lower volume, defensively as he pulled himself up from the floor, snatching one of the scattered magazines which he tucked into his jacket pocket before hurring after Gil.
” Wait up. ” Jonas called out as he caught sight of Gil about to re-enter the Garden proper.

In his customary stoic fashion Gil made his way through the quaint library toward the exit. With every single stride he fought to keep his calm, to hold back the deep frustration that Jonas had sparked to life. When his friend called after him he paid it no mind, and continued on his way. It wasn't until he was near the Garden proper that Jonas called out to him once more, prompting Gil to stop and turn toward Jonas with his arms folded across one another.
Gil remained stationary while he wore a blank expression as Jonas came closer, up until the point Jonas reached caught up to him. “What you do on your own time is your business,” Gil stated flatly, pausing for a moment to mull the thought over. “I don't care if you're a bad example for the cadets, or don't do SeeD's reputation justice. We're not playing pretend anymore though, and there won't be anyone to save us if we mess up on the battlefield and I'd rather not see you in a box because you couldn't take things seriously, Jonas.”

  Chapter 2: Die Walküre

” Come on, you know that when it's time to be serious I'm as serious as they come! ” Jonas belted out his defense ” The magazines are just for the downtime, you know? ” he continued to assure Gil, as they made their way around the inner ring of the Garden towards the exit.
Light streamed into the Garden, refracting in a rainbow of color across the shimmering tiles whose gloss exaggerated the radiance. Jonas fell in step with Gil as they moved through the large arched gateway passing back into the morning sun. Jonas casually descended the concrete steps that lead towards the turnstile like gateway, giving a quick wave to the attendant of the booth as they passed through. The small courtyard that lead into the Garden was more lively than the Garden itself, housing several small groups of Cadets and Seeds yet to make their way to the daily destination. Jonas paid them little attention as he moved past and climbed up a large flight of steps before leaving the Garden grounds all together.
” When was the last time you went to town? ” Jonas found himself asking as he took his first step on the paved road that curved through rolling hills and patches of forests between Balamb Town and Balamb Garden.

“If you say so.” Gil stated half-heartedly as he maintained a forward gaze. “Just keep your downtime to yourself, because next time everyone will know about your downtime, and I mean everyone.” Gil facetiously declared, in stark contrast to his dangerously sharp expression. Gil let out a sigh and pulled his crimson hair back as they approached the exit.
Blinding rays of light streamed into the Garden, refracted into a beautiful rainbow of color across the floor, with the gloss upon the tiles further exaggerating the radiant light. They passed through a large, arched gateway into the morning sunlight before they made their way down a short set of concrete steps, towards a turnstile. Unlike his friend Gil didn't bother to acknowledge the attendant as they made their way through, and simply continued on his way. In the courtyard at the Garden's exit several small groups of Cadets and SeeDs were gathered about, but Gil paid them no mind.
It wasn't until they were out of the courtyard, and on paved road that lead to Balamb Town that Jonas broke the long silence. For a moment Gil mulled the question over before he spoke. “I don't know, when was the last time I took my weapon in to the junk shop to be serviced?”

  Chapter 2: Die Walküre

he warmth from the morning Sun refreshed Jonas as he ad Gil started the journey into Balamb. His mind flashed back to his first year at the Garden and his first trip into Balamb and what a special treat it had been, even now as a full fledged SeeD those memories seemed fresh and important, things he would never forget.
” I guess it's been a few months then for you? ” He replied as he tried to remember exactly when Gil had last had his weapon serviced, narrowing it down as closely as he could. ” I was actually just in town last weekend, there was a Triple Triad tournament. ” Jonas continued, purposely not mentioning how poorly he had done in said tournament.
A light breeze caught Jonas' hair and whipped it loose, tossing his unkept mop to and fro. He took a deep breath, relishing the scents of the wilderness. Ahead the were nearing a dense grove of trees that bordered the road on both sides. Jonas knew this spot well, and knew that it was prime for encounters with wildlife and fiends.
” Hey, coming up. ” Jonas spoke out as he looked ahead.

As the morning sunlight fell upon Gil it brought with it a pleasant warmth and a sense of peace. Yet despite the nice weather Gil could only think of how to further prepare before they left port. After their battle with Ifrit he had come to realize that there was no such thing as being too prepared, and with their upcoming mission Gil wanted to do everything he possibly could to prepare. “We should stop by the junk shop in Balamb if we have time.”
Gil didn't bother to answer the first question, but when Jonas mentioned that there had been a Triple Triad Tournament in Balamb he couldn't help but speak up. “I need better cards,” Gil said with a hint of frustration. “I played against Instructor Trepe once a while back. I lost so badly it was humiliating.” Gil admitted, plainly frustrated at the mere memory of it.
A light breeze suddenly blew past the pair, and it sent Gil's crimson hair into a frenzy while his ponytail flailed about in the wind. Just ahead was a dense grove of trees that bordered the road on either side. It was the perfect place for a surprise attack, and when Jonas spoke out Gil reached for the massive blade on his back. Gil took hold of the weapon and tore it free from its sheath, before he brought it to rest upon his left shoulder. Gil stood at the ready with a devilish grin, his stoic demeanor gone in an instant. An encounter here would be the perfect way to warm-up for their first official mission, and the mere thought set his blood to boil. “I might owe you an apology, Jonas. You have your downtime and I have this.”

  Chapter 2: Die Walküre

Jonas slowed his pace as they neared the swaying trees that marked the beginning of the short forested path. His eyes glanced over to Gil who had already drawn his weapon and had excitement flaring in his eyes, he was eager to fight.
” I've been in a couple encounters in this area in the past, there are a lot of bite bugs and chatterpillers in this grove/ ” He spoke to Gil as he released his own blade from it's harness. ” And uh, some cadets say T-Rexaurs, though I think that's bogus. ” Jonas continued as his pace began to pick back up.
The trees cast shadows across the road as it entered the grove, shielding them from the warmth of the morning sun. The cool breeze caused the branches to sway in the wind, the sounds of leaves rustling dancing through the wood. Jonas moved calmly and stayed alert as they moved deeper into the grove when the sounds of movement from the wood caught his attention, and surely Gil's as well.
” Sounds like something ahead to the right. ” Jonas said as he pointed with the tip of his blade.

As the pair made hiked through the grove Gil maintained a firm grip upon the heavy blade resting upon his left shoulder. If a threat made itself apparent he wouldn't be caught unprepared. While they made their way along the path Jonas described his experience in the area, but Gil honestly paid his words little mind (he was far too focused on finding whatever lurked nearby) until mention of a possible T-Rexaur was brought up. At the mention of the massive predator Gil could only stare at Jonas with what could be described as 'an ear-to-ear, completely idiotic grin'. “That sounds like fun.” Gil abruptly declared, with that selfsame grin.

The further they went into the grove, the harder Gil felt his heart hammer away in his chest. All the beauty of nature was lost to him then, as he focused everything upon finding whatever it was that Jonas had noticed further back. Just as he was about to reach the peak of frustration a rustling toward the right caught his attention. “Cover me.” Gil barked the order as he burst into motion, dashing toward the source of the noise completely unaware of whatever may lurk ahead, his weapon at the ready….

  Chapter 2: Die Walküre

Jonas started to speak, when Gil laucnhed himself past in direct pursuit of the source of the nearby sound. Left speechless for the moment he could do nothing other than start after his friend, searching for the right way to scold him for the impromptu behaviour.
” Whyyyy!? ” Was the only thought the he could formulate into drawn out word as he entered the forested grove a solid ten lengths behind Gil.
A light wind tossed the springtime leaves, the rustling sound in the distance growing with each trot of his running gait. Ahead he could make out silhouettes against the light, he knew them instantly as a swarm of Bite Bugs. Gil would reach the swarm before Jonas and would likely erupt into full on attack, Jonas had never seen him respond any other way. His sword drawn and ready Jonas followed, ready to leap into the fray as soon as he arrived.

Without a concern for his own safety Gil charged blindly through the forest. It was impossible to see what awaited him through the foliage, and more than once a few stray branches caught at him but the sorcerer paid them no mind. When at last be burst through the brush and caught sight of their prey his wide grin flagged slightly, though it remained rather gleeful compared to his normally somber visage. A light wind blew Gil's blood red hair about wildly as he glared at the swarm of bugs. With a feral growl he charged at the nearest bite bug as he hefted the heavy blade from his left shoulder. Once he neared his target Gil swung the weapon out in a powerful arc meant to sever the insect's monstrous, fanged muzzle from the rest of its body.
