  Chapter 2: Die Walküre

Jonas moved as fast as he could, doing his best to navigate the uneven ground that lay before him. Ahead he could see Gil had stopped and had started his attack on the first of the gigantic insects. The low drone of their wings permiated the forest grove, Jonas found the sound unpleasant and it made him uneasy. The SeeD allowed his eyes to take in all the information they could, sub-consciously counting five bite bugs which had begun to swarm Gil, even as his blade cut through the wings of the first. Jonas would have to act fast if he wanted to at least lessen the impact they could have if they all attacked Gil together.
” You can't do everything by yourself you know! ” Jonas shouted, though he knew from experience that the decree would have little effect on Gil, only commenting due to his own frustration.
As he prepared to attack Jonas was struck from behind, feeling the heat of a fire spell sear through his jacket. Jonas turned, alarmed went he counted two more bite bugs circling around in order to protect the swarm. Jonas cursed himself for being so sloppy as he launched forward smashing the dull side of his blade into the body of one of the creatures to make a path allowing him to join Gil's side.
” Let's focus our attacks and take them out one at a time. ” Jonas said, repeating a strategy that had been drilled into his head over and over during his time as a cadet.

OOC Talk:
feel free to RP them attacking Gil, it's easier that way for these kind of battles. Also, remember we can draw magic from them and either cast it there, or stock it.

Gil felt the familiar sensation of a clean blow, though he cursed over the fact that the attack was slightly off the intended mark. However in midst of a battle there was little time to chastise himself over poor swordsmanship, as the rest of the bite bugs had already begun to swarm around him. For a time the sorceror was content to hold his stance, intent upon waiting for the insects to make the first move.
Before long the first of the bite bugs flew at Gil, a mess of snapping teeth heading straight for his right shoulder. Gil artfully dodged the beast's snapping maw with a simple sidestep, though he had no time to counter as the next two were already upon him. With lightning reflexes the sorceror dodged to the right to avoid the first of them, but that only left him open to the other bug as it crashed into his stomach. Thankfully the sudden movement had spared him from the creature's razor sharp fangs.
The impact of the bite bug against his stomach sent Gil reeling back, the breath knocked out of him. Coughing violently at the sudden lack of air left completely exposed as another Bite Bug launched an attack, charging at him and opening its maw wide before it bit down hard upon his left forearm. With a cry of pain Gil let his blade fall to the grass at his feet and brought his fist down upon the insect, striking it with all the fury he could muster and forced it to release his arm.
A cursory examination of the wound revealed that it wasn't very deep, the thick fabric of his SeeD Uniform having spared him the worst of the damage–though the sleeve had been torn to tatters in the process. Gil deftly tore the tatters away, leaving his arm bare from the elbow down.
In the back of his mind he knew that Instructor Trepe would give him an earful over the torn uniform. A few puncture wounds from the bite dripped blood down his arm, but none severe enough to warrant any attention at that moment.
It was then that Gil caught sight of the last Bite Bug, the all-too-familiar aura around it a clear indicator that the beast was about to cast a spell. A mixture of anger at the beasts actually wounding him, and at that particular Bite Bug for daring to use magic against him of all people welled up. Without giving it any forethought Gil reached out, took hold of that feeling, and drew magic from the beast's reserves. A stream blue light burst from the creature, before Gil took control of the spell mid-draw and manifest it as a wave of fire flying directly at the Bite Bug. Gil was seemingly determined to incinerate the bug for the perceived slight.

  Chapter 2: Die Walküre

Jonas staggered forward into the swarm, his blade swishing though the air like a whirlwind as he did his best to strike the creatures, their dexterity proving to be more challenging in a swarm than he had expected. His eyes were sharp, watching the bugs and Gil at once, calculating the best time to go for a kill strike, thin the herd as instructor Trepe would say. The moment presented itself rather matter-of-factly, as Gil seemed to be staggered for the moment, drawing the attention of most of the swarm, one going as far as to attempt to cast a spell at close range. Jonas anticipated Gil's response, sliding past with a sweeping strike through one of the bugs at the very instant that Gil draw-cast fire on the other, dropping the swarms numbers from seven to five in an instant.
” Nice move! ” Jonas cheered as he circled the swarm, Gil holding down the opposite side. ” Most kills buys dinner. ” Jonas chuckled the challenge, though he knew that the actual payout would likely wait until they received leave.

Out of the corner of his eye Gil watched Jonas cut a trail through the swarm, though he seemed to have little success in doing any permanent damage. Before he could move to assist Jonas a pair of Bite Bugs edged closer toward him, preparing to attack. Aware that Jonas was more than capable of looking after himself Gil turned his attention back to the beasts in front of him. With a wry smirk Gil hefted the massive blade back onto his left shoulder and grinned maniacally before taunting the beasts. “Let's play.”
One of the pair held back in order to channel a fire spell, while the other flew at him with its mouth open–seemingly intent upon biting him. Gil wanted to lash out at the one that was casting a spell for the perceived slight, but with the other rushing at him there was little he could do about it at the moment. With a guttural growl of anger he backstepped to dodge the beast's ravenous maw. “You're offering to buy dinner, then?” Gil excitedly snarled in reply, crouching low in preparation to launch an attack.
With the majority of his weight on his left leg Gil sprung forward in a crouched dash with as much force as his right could muster. White hot pain seared through his left arm as he swung the massive blade forward in an overhead arc, drops of blood from the bite wound earlier flying freely in the process. Pain wasn't enough to deter him from the attack, meant to crush the bite bug in front of him before it had a chance to recover from its foolhar
dy charge. All the same, the maneuver left him completely exposed to the bug that was casting a fire spell….

  Chapter 2: Die Walküre

The heavy thump oh his heartbeat pummeled the inside of Jonas' chest as he swung his blade left and then right in sweeping arcs, doing his best to keep the swarm of bugs at bay while he looked for his next opening. He could Feel Gil's presence nearby, the air itself being displaced by his movements. Jonas backed up as the bugs buzzed around him, sensing the attack that way coming for both of them. His eyes moved quickly, seeing the spark of flame arising from the nearby bite bug. Instinctively he shoved at Gil, doing his best to push him aside while diving forward himself, going low towards the fiend. With a massive upward jab he felt his blade pushed though the hard exoskeleton of the foe and then it's weight as it could no long support itself with flight. Jonas thrust his blade sending the defeated foe flying into the brush as he did so.
” Three more! ” Jonas yelled, totally in the moment feeling the blood pulse through his veins.

Gil felt the edge of his blade bite into the bug, turning it into a disgusting mess beneath the force of the blow. There was no time to savor the moment though, for he could feel the magic in the air–another Bite Bug was about to cast a spell! Once more that familiar anger rose to a boil, but before he could even think to react he was thrown to the forest floor. When he crashed against the hard dirt he let out a grunt of pain, but darted into a defensive crouch the moment he heard a familiar hiss just a few feet away. Awkwardly stumbling toward him was first bite bug, its wings severed and broken. “Thought I finished you,” Gil thought aloud, rising to his feat and towering over the beast.
With a vicious smile Gil reached out to the beast and drew magic from it, adding the spells to his own reserves, before approaching the beast and brutally stomping upon it in rapid repetition. When there was no doubt the beast was dead he moved to retrieve his weapon before rejoining the battle. Jonas had spared him from what would've no doubt been some nasty burns, but had drawn the attention of the remaining bugs in the process….

  Chapter 2: Die Walküre

Jonas found his focus drifting towards Gil as he took heavy breaths while resting momentarily on the leaf strewn ground that made up the grove clearing. Satisfied that his friend was now safely out of harms way he became suddenly aware that he might not have things as lucky. His eyes moved quickly as he sensed the remaining bite bugs swarming towards him, instinctively kicking up dirt as he attempted to scramble back to his feet.
” Shit, SHIT! ” He found himself exclaiming as he narrowly escaped a dive bomb of an attack by the first bug, pulling his blade up defensively as the second followed suite, it's polished steel blade catching a beam of sunlight as he twisted it through the air repelling the bite bugs frenzy of an attack. Jonas sensed that if he were patient he may be able to strike back, but he feared if he could not get back to his feet quickly enough he might soon find himself backed into the treeline. Though it pained him to realize such a fact, he hoped Gil would step in soon.

Before he could recover his lost weapon Gil's attention turned to Jonas, in a pinch after having drawn the ire of the remaining bite bugs. With no small amount of effort Gil somehow managed to shake away his battle fervor, and instead turned his focus to assisting Jonas. Without another moment's hesitation he instinctively reached out for that inner reserve of magic, and drew a spell from the resevoir. Casually lifting his left arm overhead, a small crystalline formation starting to take form over the palm of his hand. It quickly grew into a jagged spear of ice, bulky in the middle with a deadly point on either end. When the frozen lance was completely formed he thrust his arm forward and sent it flying through the air, hurtling toward one of the bite bugs near Jonas. Upon contact the icy spear tore clean through the creature's abdomen, continuing on until it crashed into a tree, shattering upon impact–save for the tip, which was wedged firmly in the bark. Gil started toward his friend and the two bugs, already prepared to ready another spell.

  Chapter 2: Die Walküre

There was a moment of tranquility that seemed to follow Gil's powerful magic assault which had impaled one of the three remaining insectoid foes, Jonas fully aware of the awe inspiring power that his friend possessed, now able to catch his breath. Sensing that the tides of this battle had finally turned, with their being one foe for each of them remaining Jonas felt now was the time to follow Gil's lead from earlier and stock some magic for the future.
” It was getting hairy there for awhile, it pains me to say it but thanks for the help. ” Jonas said as he planted both feet squarely into the clearing's grassy ground. With both hands grasping separate parts of his blade—one on the hilt and another near the tip— Jonas held his blade out ahead of him and feeling the magically energy from the nearest of the remaining bite bugs he drew forth with a lush blue aura as many cure spells as he could.
