THE ARRIVAL (unknown)
Many years ago, the exact time and year forgotten a race of people arrived on the planet known only as the Cetra, or Ancients as they are called now. They arrived looking for their "promise land" which they thought they had found, and then decided to live among the human race of the planet in peace.

THE CALAMITY (unknown)
Sometime years after the Cetra arrived on the planet the event known only as the Calamity happened where the being known as Jenova came from the sky riding a smaller planetary object as its vessel and crashed into the northern continent forming what it now known as the northern crater. The being known as Jenova brought great suffering to the planet causing the deaths of many of the Cetra race. The planet then created the five weapons to kill the being known as Jenova but before the weapons could complete their task the Cetra managed to seal Jenova away and the lifestream gathered at the northern crater and began its work to heal the planet. and the weapons would lie dormant awaiting the rebirth of the being known as Jenova.

HUMAN GROWTH (unknown)
Over the next few thousand years the human’s that populated the planet learned much from the Cetra, who were slowly becoming closer to complete extinction, and began building towns and cities all over the planet. At the site currently known as Midgar once sat eight cities that through the growth in this period eventually grew into one large city.

THE JENOVA PROJECT (30 years ago)
Some thirty years ago a scientist known as Prof. Gast came across the ancient sealed remains of Jenova and took his finds back with him to his mansion in Nibelhiem where he would begin his experiments. Looking for funds to pay for all of his experiments Gast looked to Shin-Ra who agreed to fund his work and sent one of their own scientists known as Hojo to help the Professor. Along with Hojo a Turk named as Vincent and a female scientist known as Lucrecia were also sent to Nibelhiem. Over the next few years Hojo and Gast have no luck with their experiments trying to Clone the being known as Jenova. Due to his failure Hojo, who had recently fell in love with Lucrecia would inject Jenova cells into their unborn baby, the resulting experiment would cause Lucrecia to become deformed and after giving Birth to her soon, who they would name Sephiroth , she would flee never to be seen again.

SEPHIROTH (25 years ago)
The baby born to Hojo and Lucrecia, named Sephiroth would be taken back to Midgar and watched his entire life by Shinra officials, he would never find who his real father and mother were or what they did to him, until a fateful date 21 years later.

THE TRUE ANCIENTS (25 years ago)
After failing with his experiments to Clone Jenova, who he thought was an Ancient of the race Cetra, Gast would begin his travels of the world trying to learn all he could about the Cetra. Eventually at some point he would mean the great Philosopher Bugenhagen and learn more about the Cetra and soon would find one of the last remaining Cetra known as Ilfalna. Gast and Ilfalna retreated to the far north to a town called icicle village where eventually they would fall in love and give birth to a baby named Aeris 21 years ago.

THE WUTAI WAR (15 years ago)
As Shin-Ra grew in power from the discovery of mako energy, which directly harmed the planet’s lifestream, they would begin to attack cities and towns eventually taking control of most of the known world. Soon they would start their final war with the proud city of Wutai which would eventually lose the war and was forced to becoming a tourist town to survive after the destruction of their old ways. During this time Shin-Ra was still after the Cetra, as Gast had been, hoping to finish their experiments and create a powerful clone army. They would eventually locate Ilfalna and her daughter Aeris at the northern crater and would take them back to Midgar. Upon arrival the two Cetra somehow managed to escape the turks and find their way to Midgar’s sector 5 where the badly wounded Ilfalna would die leaving Aeris in the care of a woman known as Elmyra.

THE NIBELHIEM REACTOR (4 1/2 years ago)
four and a half years ago Sephiroth now known as the greatest warrior on the planet and the star of Shin-Ra’s SOLDIER as well as a SOLDIER from Gongaga known as Zack and a lowly Shin-Ra MP known as Cloud, who was from the town of Nibelhiem and had left to join SOLDIER but couldn’t make it, would return to investigate a problem in the Nibelhiem reactor. Upon visiting the reactor with their guide Tifa Sephiroth notices all of the cloned beings located in the reactor and heads back to nibelhiem where he visits the Shin-Ra mansion and finds all of the records of the Jenova Project. Enraged and believing he is a Ancient and that Jenova is his mother Sephiroth sets fire to the town of Nibelhiem and heads back to the reactor to free Jenova. When Zack arrives at the reactor he and Sephiroth do battle but Sephiroth easily defeats the SOLDIER and proceeds to attempt to free Jenova. Soon after Tifa makes her way to the Reactor and finds her father dead enraged she attempts to kill Sephiroth but is badly injured herself at which point Cloud arrives and seeing Tifa and Zack dead would pick up Zack’s sword and run Sephiroth through. Thinking he had killed Sephiroth, Cloud returns to care for the badly injured Tifa. Sephiroth managed to survive the attack however and left the reactor with Jenova. Cloud would chase after Sephiroth and in the short battle that followed would manage to cause Sephiroth to fall over the Nibelhiem bridge into the lifestream below.

THE CLONES (4 1/2 years ago)
When Hojo came to find that His son Sephiroth had thought to have been killed he took injured Cloud and Zack back to the Shinra Mansion where he would begin testing on them and many others in order to try to create a clone of his son Sephiroth. Hojo injected Cloud and all the others with Jenova cells but had no success in creating a clone of Sephiroth.

THE PRESENT (1 year before the game starts)
Now some 4 1/2 years have passed since Cloud and Zack were captured by Hojo and the Sephiroth cloning tests began, Just weeks ago both Cloud and Zack escaped the lab in Nibelhiem and began their trek back towards Midgar, both suffering from long term memory loss.
