Zakuro took the time to think over what Riku had said, he knew definitely that any route outside of the forest would lead into an encounter with a force that they most certainly would not be able to best, however the unknown that lay before them seemed daunting in it's own right. Turning back, glancing past Riku to to the edge of the wood, where there was still a small vestige of light he took in what breath he could from the air around them.
” Moving forward is our only option, we will surely encounter something along this path, but if we can best it and make it to the fishers shack then perhaps.. yes perhaps then we can truly plan our next course of action. ” Zakuro replied as he turned back towards the darkness ahead of him, taking a step forward, knowing that Riku would be right behind him, regardless of what waited ahead of them.

The path had become more visible as their eyes adjusted, though the darkness was still quite thick around them. The weight of their situation had made itself clear, yet Zakuro pressed on, one step at a time, sensing the corruption coming closer and closer with each step. Ahead he could make out a clearing, he remembered it from his times on this trail, something inside of him told him whatever waited for them in the forest would meet them there. He knew Riku would also be keen to this, and remained quite as he moved upon the clearing.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1

As Riku continued to pray, the monk could feel a familiar presence as the air began to move once again around Riku and Zakuro. Riku's kami had heard his prayers. The combination of the moving air and the presence of his kami brought Riku strength and hoped that Zakuro could feel the presence as well. “The dark aura may be dense, but we are not alone.” Riku tried to reassure Zakuro as he tightened his grip on his shakkou and prayer beads. His back straightened as he continued behind Zakuro into the clearing.

His eyes had adjusted to the darkness, around him he could make out the edge of the clearing and the almost level grassy area in which the path itself cut through. He could feel the air moving around them again and Riku seemed uplifted by this fact, but it didn't mask that darkness that seemed directly ahead. Zakuro knew that whatever it was stood in between them and actual escape. His hand reflexed towards his blade, grasping the rough sharkskin of his hilt.
” Whatever it is, it's coming so be ready. ” Zakuro said to Riku without turning back, feeling a slight rhythmic vibration in the ground, as if something large was approaching. The trees that lined the path on the far end of the clearing began to sway and the crackle of a branch braking reverberated through the area. Zakuro pulled his blade quietly, and took a defensive stance, left foot forward and blade ahead of him, ready for anything. Suddenly it burst out into the clearing. It was huge at least eight or night feet tall. In the darkness he couldn't make out it's skin color but it seemed off, perhaps green or even a weird shade of blue. It was humanoid but bulky and only wore a tattered loin cloth. It's canine teeth seemed to protrude from it's upper jaw, and over its shoulder was a massive club. Zakuro had never seen such a thing, even in darkness. His heart was thumping in his chest.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1

Riku's eyes widened at the sight of the monster. If not for the presence of his kami, Riku may be taken a steps backward to just fight his feeling of flight. Instead, Riku stood tall behind Zakuro and out a reassuring hand on his shoulder, “Steady. His size just means he's a bigger content.” Feeling Riku's intent, the fresh air that blew past them pushed forward and encompassed Zakuro, calming his nerves for the coming battle. Riku kept his hand and voice steady, but he worried for the ensue battle. He could tell due to his connection to the wind that the fresh air and pollution had already started a battle before hand.

Zakuro had never seen anything like the creature that lumbered out of the darkness ahead of them. It that moment he truly realized what they were up against, and the situation they were in. They were not just traitors now who had killed their lord, that would be bad enough to try to outrun and change, no they were enemies of whatever force or place this thing had come from.
” We definitely have to play this smar— ” Zakuro had begun to reply when the thing, not waiting on them to gather themselves, launched forward in a quicker than expected leap which revealed the massive club it had been dragging from behind. The club came smashing down between them, giving Zakuro just enough time to leap to his left. Zakuro, had it been a human, would have acted quickly with this opening but he was not sure how to approach thie foe yet and stood fast, odachi still ahead of him.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1

As Riku eyed the opponent from behind Zakuro, Riku noticed something odd from when the wind from his kami met the dark aura of the oni. A faint green light appeared where the two forces met. This line that divided the two flowed forward as the oni rushed towards them. Riku, noticing this, was able to move with confidence out of the way right behind Zakuro, reminding the monk that seeing the attack didn't mean his body could react in time. As he dodged, Riku noticed the line ebbed towards the sides of the oni where the club was not aimed. It seemed that the intent of the oni his aura to push back his kami's wind back and flow where the aura was not as intense.

Without the connection to his kami, Riku knew that Zakuro could most likely not see this conflict in forces. Riku placed both of his hands on the sides of Zakuro head and allowed his ki to flow inward causing his eyes to flash green for a moment,
“Watch for the green light and attack where it is closest to the oni. This is all I can do for now.” Riku had not planned to fight such an adversary and his own ki had not recovered enough to launch a significant attack against the oni.

Zakuro felt Riku's hands as they clasped to either side of his head, he heard his words but they seemed to fade quickly as something ahead of him began to glow. The darkness around him was illuminated in a wave of color, a dark seeping green light which seemed to push all through the clearing but was unable to penetrate due to the white-blue that seemed to flow around him. Suddenly it was all clear, as if his eyes had been opened to a whole new world that he didn't know existed. His first thought was amazement, how this would change everything, then he realized Riku must always see the world like this and he was in awe of his friend's ability.
” It's so clear! ” Were the only words he could mutter as he watched the ogre yank back with amazing strength, pulling the massive wooden club up high again. Zakuro would not wait this time, he saw his opening, the creature was slower than he had originally thought. The samurai pushed off his back leg with as much force as he could muster, leaped with a flying slash across the oni's exposed mid-section. The creatures blood, dark green almost black, spewed out as the odachi cut. Zakuro landed and turned quickly, returning to the defensive as the oni staggered backwards with a roar. He looked to Riku, hoping he could add a punch of his own before the creature attacked again.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1

Riku watched as Zakuro assimilated to his new sight quickly. Riku was thankful that his partner had spent so much time working on his martial arts, as opposed to himself, and with that was able to act quickly. The dark aura pushed back against his kami's wind as the oni charged for another attack. The blood rushed out as Zakuro took advantage of the weakness. “Good strike.” Riku gathered his ki and with a swing of his shakkou caused a circular ball of wind to form before the wound causing the blood to spew out far faster than usual. The ball became bigger and bigger as it spun faster and faster until the tension was released, striking the same wound with great force.

Zakuro stepped back, keeping his odachi ahead of him as he watched the creature stagger and look down at the wound he had made across it's midsection. Unaware of Riku's actions, his focus fully on the oni he watched as the near black blood oozed from the wound and the creature let out a terrifying yell, deep and low which seemed to vibrate the woods around them.
” Riku, be on guard! ” Zakuro managed to say just as the creature, with mighty force, threw it's massive club across the clearing towards Riku. Zakuro's eyes darted through the darkness to the club, he hoped Riku could muster enough speed to get out of the way, but knew that he could not waste another chance and without hesitation lunged forward pointing his blade out so the tip could stab into the creature's right thigh, hoping to impair it's movement as much as he could.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1

The dark aura fought back against purifying wind of Riku's kami as the club flew across the dark forest at Riku. Though the monk could see the green light move towards him before the club, he was unable to move fast enough to move completely out of the way. Riku moved to his right and the club clashed with his left shoulder and sent Riku flying backwards, causing him to release scream of pain. His shakkou was kept tightly in his grasp and Riku found himself using the staff to help him back to his feet and keep him up there, “I'm fine.” Riku did not want Zakuro to stop his own attack due to him, but the monk's left arm hung by himself, his prayer beads wrapped around his fingers that remained lax.

Zakuro allowed himself to look as the club flew through the air striking Riku for a brief moment while he twisted the blade that he that thrust deep into the ogre's right thigh. Zakuro knew he would be injured and also knew now was the time to take chances that he would usually not take in order to end this fight as fast as possible. With a powerful tug he pulled his odachi free and instead of retreating back to plot his next strike the Samurai thrust his blade upwards towards the beasts gut.
” Ah, damnit! ” Zakuro let out the swear as he the oni's fist and lower forearm struck him with enough force to push him downwards in a daze, but not before he had sliced a nasty gash into the beasts lower abdominal area, spilling it's dark green blood and gut down onto Zakuro as he fell to his knees.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1

Riku watched as Zakuro continued with his assault against the oni. The monk had thought to move his weight off of his shakkou and could sense that the weight shift would cause a struggle as his fatigue from the day between to catch up to him. Riku mustered the physical strength that he could do wave his shakkou, and his body, towards the oni. A gust of wind came from behind Zakuro and towards the oni's forearm, slowing down the fist as it hit its target. Riku's left hand gripped his prayer beads tightly as he gathered the ki that he could and sent the power that he could over to Zakuro's sword which began to swirl around the blade, causing it to gain the appearance of razor edges to flow around it, and towards the oni's face as the wind wrapped around its eyes, scrapping the eyes and blurring the field of vision. “Keep it up!” Riku shouted to Zakuro trying to cut through the daze.

Zakuro felt his body tense as he awaited the full force of the Oni's retaliatory blow which came but packed much less of a punch then he had expected, his body able to absorb the blow while only going to a kneel. The samurai felt a rush of wind around him and suddenly he knew what had happened and he looked up as the creature began to stagger back in a daze as the wind itself seemed to emit from his odachi and cut across the face of the ogre. Zakuro sensed his chance and on some whim of an idea that flooded his mind he moved, caught up by the gust which pushed him upwards. He pulled his blade along and felt the resistance as it cut up the ogre's gut and chest and finally it's face. The green blood oozed and splattered around him and as he landed he ogre stepped back and then with a thunderous thud fell backwards.
” Riku, are you alright?! ” Zakuro said as he picked himself up looking back towards his ally, hoping that the both the ogre's club or perhaps his over-extension in battle had not caused serious injury, fully prepared to carry him the rest of the way if need be.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 1

The corrupted air from the oni began to fade as the creature fell and was replaced by the purifying wind of his kami. Riku breathed a sigh of relief as his fatigue was forgotten among the reassuring presence of his kami, until Riku tried to take a step. The monk moved his weight off his shakkou to take a step and found himself almost falling to the ground, catching his fall with his left hand which caused a shooting pain to arc up his left side. A finger or two were certainly broken from the ogre's club though Riku knew that a combination of meditation and time would heal the wound quickly.

Riku gripped his shakkou firmly and stood back to his feet,
“I will be.” Riku moved his weight slower this time as he took a few steps towards where they had been heading before the oni had come, “We must keep moving, without the miasma Onaga may send samurai after us.” Riku tried to keep his will strong as he took two more steps and the world around him went black, a breeze swept around him, bracing his fall into the grass.

Zakuro watched as Riku attempted to step forward, catching himself as he nearly fell over. Zakuro knew his ally had giving everything he had in the past hour or however long it had been since they had arrived at the lord's manor. He also knew that both of them needed rest, but they would have to reach the safety of the fisher's shack first.
” Come on, take my shoulder and let us make haste. ” The samurai said as he returned his odachi to it's sheath with a flick of the ogre's blood and a wipe across his gi as he moved it into position.
Taking a few steps across the clearing Zakuro helped Riku to stand and motioned for him to put some of his weight onto Zakuro, then he started forward. Zakuro found the path quickly, it was as if the wind itself was guiding them now. He moved as quickly as possible, and ahead after some time had pasted the trees began to thin and he could see the moonlight reflecting on the lake, the fisher's cabin dark and still between them and the water. It seemed that they had made it.
