Chapter VII ~ Lords of This World

| |
The musky smell of the hotel rooms furnishings sturred Jonas from what up to that point had been a pretty decent sleep—all things considered. As he opened his eyes the motes of dust danced in the bright beams of sunlight that poured through the borders of the covered window came sparkling to life. Jonas let out a dry groan as he tossed the light blanket off to the side, turning towards the edge of the bed and caught sight of Alucard sitting in the rooms lone chair.
” Jesus! Why do you always have to be sitting there in the dark corner like that? ” Jonas complained again, the same complaint he had made every morning since they had arrived in Augusta on the run from Warren Town.
It had been almost two weeks since they feld the reactor, but that had only been the start of the ordeal as escaping Warren Town—now without it's reactor due to them—had been just as difficult. They had arrived in Augusta four days prior and taken up temporary housing in the coach house and tavern until they could figre out what their next step would be in tracking down Vash the Stampede.
” Wipe that look off your face and let's head downstairs to the saloon and see if we can find out anything new… ” Jonas said as he wiggled his shoulders into his gun holsters, feeling the weight of the Graders at his ribs before putting on his jacket and heading towards the door.
The door opened into the long hallway that led towards a railed balcony which overlooked the saloon below. Jonas was greated with shouts and laughter as he stepped out, it seemed that this morning was lively downstairs. |

Alucard grinned towards Jonas as he was startled before looking barely out the window, hidden behind the curtain. “Warren Town won't forget what we did for sometime. Can't leave our guard down.” It was this overly cautious side that allowed him to survive for so long.
Alucard stood up from his chair and put his large red hat on his head, his eyes hidden behind his reflective glasses. Since bonding with that Plant, he found that his energy was higher than ever. He understood the impact it had on the town, but it was an amazing feeling to him. One he wished to experience again. Alucard dashed away that thought as he followed behind Jonas.

Jonas' hand reflexively reached for the wooden rail as he started down the stairs, his eyes casually scanning over the crowd of maybe twenty that had already gathered in the saloon. Jonas turned to the right as he reached the bottom of the stairs, looking on the bar which stretched along the back wall. He counted six men seating in the stools there, plus another fourteen or so at the tables in the large open room. Jonas eyed the Bartender, a man named Thomas that he had taken to trying to gathering information from since they had arrived. As he started towards the bar he saw as Thomas motioned in the general direction of the stairs, A large man seated in front of him turned to look.
” That's not a good sign. ” Jonas muttered to himself as he seated man seemed to nod and stand up, grasping at a small stack of tattered papers that had been on the bar in front of him. ” Bounty hunter. ” Jonas said aloud as he turned back to see where Alucard was, sensing that things might go sour.
The burly man was hastily flipping through the stack of papers, before stopping and settling on one, pulling it close to his face to look then looking past Jonas towards Alucard, before looking back at the paper.
” STOP! VASH THE STAMPEDE!!! ” The man suddenly yelled out, pointing past Jonas towards Alucard. |

|
Alucard followed behind Jonas and took in the surroundings of the bar, as he knew Jonas was doing. Alucard noticed the bartenders nod along with Jonas, “Yea…” His two hands opened into a ready position. His hands began to moved to his guns as the man pointed towards him and dropped in confusion to the man's words. Alucard looked behind him as if trying to find Vash, “Where?!” His vision passed over his red coat and he realized. The man was talking about him, “Wait, look.” Alucard grabbed his hat and revealed his long black hair. “See, not blond.”

Jonas took a step back out of the line of sight between the burly bounty hunter and Alucard, doing his best to read the situation. It was clear that reports of someone fitting Vash's description had gotten around, and while Jonas could easily tell the difference between the two, he could see how there could be a mix up.
” Black hair? ” The large, hard faced man said as he looked back at the wanted paper. ” Hair color tis easy ta change, and yer do fit the description after all. ” He continued to speak as the people had begun to stand from their seats and back away towards the walls, clearing the space between Alucard and Jonas and the bounty hunter.
” Now listen. We don't want any tro— ” Jonas had started to speak when he noticed movement from the stairs and quickly turned ready to draw at whoever was trying to get the drop on them.
” That's not Vash the Stampede you fool! ” A female voice cut Jonas off, yelling down from the balcony above. The woman at the top of the stairs was of average height with a clutch of dark black hair and was wearing a long cloak that came down to her knees. Jonas relaxed for a moment, as another much taller woman in similar garb with long auburn hair walked up and stood behind her. ” Look closer at that damn wanted poster. ” She continued as she started down the stairs toward Alucard. |

Alucard was taken aback at how quickly the man's retort was and realized that his hair had been blonde at one point. Alucard pointed towards the woman who defended him from not being Alucard. “Yea, look closer.” Alucard opened up his red coat, “See, my red coat…well it is different and so are these glasses.” Alucard removed them from his face, his voice losing some confidence in the tone as he looked at them. Alucard leaned closer to Jonas and whispered, “Why didn't we noticed this early?” Alucard had been involved with Vash for a long time now and just realized he had been traveling this planet dressed like the most wanted man.

Jonas looked back up the stairs as the the two women started down, the shorter one first, followed by the 'big' one. He relaxed his shoulders sensing that the danger had probably passed and took a few steps towards the bar, taking a brief glace at the image of Vash the Stampere on the bounty hunter's worn peice of paper.
” I mean, you have to admit you two do sorta dress the same. I just never thought about it until now though. ” Jonas replied as he pulled up to the bar and let his eyes meet those of the bartender, making it clear that what had just occured was not alright.
” Seems like a lot of us are looking for Vash these days. ” The short dark haired woman said as she passed Alucard looking him up and down closely for a moment before moving by towards the bar. The taller woman stepped off the stairs to follow when the saloon doors slammed open causing enough noise to draw everyones attention.
” It's the news from Dankin and Felnarl! It's happened there as well… all the Plants are… GONE! ” The man who had burst in said quieting the entire room, everyone's mind going to the same place, that Augusta was next in the geographic line. |

Alucard grinned ear from ear as the short woman looked him up and down, “He's got great style.” Alucard's sharp canines gleamed and were quickly taken away by the sound of the door slamming open. The Plant quickly looked over at Jonas and shook his head as if the man made just accused him. “That makes here next, right?” Alucard shrugged his shoulders as if the option was obvious, “Let's go protect them before they vanish. May just see Vash.” His eyes moving towards those looking for him.

There was a quietness that overtook the room after the news settled, everyone realizing at the same time that whatever was happening in the cities all over Gunsmoke might actually happen there as well. Jonas was not surprised when Alucard broke that silence, and he tended to agree with him on principle.
” Sounds about right to me, after all this kind of news has only started happening since we lost track of Vash on the steamer, so it only makes sense that he's involved with it in some way. ” Jonas found himself replying, unwilling revealing to the two women who had cleared up the mess before that they did it fact know and had come in contact with the legendary outlaw not too long ago.
” Did you just say you were with Vash on a sand steamer?! ” The dark haired woman asked, her voice becoming more excited as she spoke the name of the outlaw.
” Uhhh, well… ” Jonas was trying to walk away now, his eyes meeting with Alucard's own, a apology of sorts for what he might have just gotten them into. |

Alucard looked over at Jonas as he let slip their past encounter with the man that all these people were chasing. Alucard quickly turned and raised his hands, defensive against the attacking tone in the woman's voice,. “Yea, we got pretty close to catching him, too.” Alucard lowered his hands, leaving his palm open by his side, making not gesture to his pockets, “But I'm sure we all know how slippery he can be. Someone would have claimed that bounty by now if he wasn't. Am I, right?” Alucard shrugged his shoulders, “That $$60,000,000,000 reward is too high to pass up though.” Alucard hoped that Jonas would play along though fearful to even look at him as all eyes were on him.

Jonas had realized his mistake almost instantly and now both he and Alucard had only one common goal, get out of that place before anyone really started putting two and two together.
” Definitely right, we should probably go ahead and be about our business though. ” Jonas replied as he started towards the double swinging doors that would lead them outside. He was moving quickly, turning sideways to squeeze between two chairs that were close together, the freedom of the street just a few feet away.
” Now hold on a second, this other picture I have sorta does look like your friend… and this one.. this one looks like. YOU. ” The big man said, putting it all together as he was speaking.
” Ahhh shit. ” Jonas muttered as he slowed to a stop, his hands already on his guns in a bolt of lightning that pulled them both free. It was not wonder they would already have a bounty on their heads, as much trouble as they had been in since bumping into Vash. |

Alucard followed right behind Jonas, waving back towards the crowd, “Well, it was nice being mistaken for the most wanted man, but we got to–” Alucard stopped short as the man pointed to their own wanted posters. Things seemed to slow down as Jonas pulled his guns. Alucard turned and his right hand went into his pocked. Instead of a gun, a flash bang was removed from the inside of his coat and was sent flying across the bar, “Run.” Alucard spoke with a monotone. stern voice trying to cut through the chaos so Jonas would react quickly and not become blinded. Alucard turned and began running out of the bar.

Jonas felt the weight of the graders in his hands as he pulled them free from their holsters, his eyes sharp, looking from movement not just from the large bounty hunter, but also looking to see if anyone was moving along with him. As his eyes quickly scanned the bar area he saw in slow motion as Alucard rolled the flash grenade across the dusty wooden floor. Instinctively he shielded his eyes with his coat sleeve, he could feel the concussive wave as the explosion of light happened and as he looked up he saw Alucard moving towards the hallway under the stairs which would lead to an exit.
” Probably a better idea than shooting up the place. ” Jonas yelled after Alucard as he started moving as fast as he could, dodging chairs and blinded men into the hall. He knew the Thomas stable was ahead of him, and through there they could reach the street, he just hoped that the bounty hunter wasn't smart enough to have people staged around the exits waiting.
” Hey! HEY! Wait! ”The feminine voice called behind him, the voice of the black haired woman. Jonas heard her footsteps following them into the stables, it appeared she would be harder to get rid of than that. |

Alucard heart was pumping fast as he sprinted away from the man people with guns about to aimed at him. The Plant thought to himself that for years, year uncounted, that he had spent hiding, blending, and making sure to not stand out in the least. Since his interactions with Vash, that was almost non-existant. From some unnamed figure now to a wanted man compared to the most wanted man. His life was now completely changed, but at least it was interesting.
Alucard heard the female's voice and the foot steps and looked over at Jonas who he was sure heard the same. Alucard moved next to the doorway as he entered the stable and motioned with his head for Jonas to hide as well. His katars slide out of their holsters silently as he lied in wait to ambush the woman should she head into stable.

Jonas moved quickly following Alucard through the long hallway towards the stables. Ahead he could smell the foul odor of the Thomas' and behind him he could hear the footsteps of the dark haired woman running after them.
” She's not armed, lets handle this as quickly as possible. ” Jonas yelled ahead as Alucard ducked to the left of the stable door and Jonas sensing his plant continued straight through hoping that in all the confusion the woman would follow right behind and give Alucard the jump on her.
” Stop, please! ”the woman yelled after them as they entered the stable and she followed behind. |

Alucard listened intently to the sound of the woman's foot steps as she followed behind him. He tensed his body as the foot steps got closer and closer and sprang forward as soon as she came through the door way. His two hands grabbed onto her shoulders, his katars extended past her neck and into her field of vision, “Tell me.” Alucard's voice was low though his breath could felt on the back of her head, “Why would someone trying to claim out bounty say please?” Alucard moved his katars slightly closer to her neck, their cold metal being felt against her skin,

Jonas moved quickly into the stables, not slowing his pace until he was sure the woman had entered and Alucard was behind her. The stables were big, mostly separated into stalls for the Thomas' to reside, however the center was mostly open and the dirt floor was littered with straw. There were two large barn doors which were currently open to the street, letting in the hot morning sunlight. Jonas turned to look back, seeing Alucard with the woman and took a few steps towards them.
” We have to make this quick. ” Joans said as he motioned to the open street, though they seemed to mostly be out of sight for the time being.
” I'm not with the bounty hunter! Now let ME GO! ”The woman's tone was shifting, there was some spark in the way she talked now.
Jonas noticed as he watched down the hallway for anyone following a shadow at his feet. He turned to act but it hit him all at once, like a truck, sending him to the dirt ground, his Graders both coming free and falling with him. The X-shaped metal projectile lying next to him on the ground now.
” Good job Milly! ”The dark haired woman shouted as he suddenly moved with an extreme quickness, ducking with a quick rotation that sent her cape around revealing row after row of small derringers, two of which she already had in her hand as she rolled back and trained them on Alucard.” We're with the Bernardelli Insurance Company and we're looking for Vash. ” She said with a glimmer in her eye, sensing that the two of them knew something. |

Alucard was surprised as the big metal X came flying past him as hit Jonas to the ground. His grip loosened in that moment and the woman took advantage to get away and aimed two guns at him. Alucard dropped both of his arms by his side and his katars slide into his coat, “Well, unless a look-a-like will help, we can't help you.” Alucard stared at the woman behind his reflective glasses as he walked towards Jonas. His movement gave no indentication of fear nor urgency. He reach down and helped Jonas back to his feet, “I don't want to rush someone pointing guns at me, but are we done? Those bounty hunters could be here any moment and I'd hate to cause more work for ya.”

Jonas let out a long painful groan as he pulled himself up into a sitting position, pushing the metallic X off him in the process which kicked up a plume of dust from the stable floor. He looked over towards Alucard who seemed to be talking the one woman down, then over to the other bigger one, her amber hair gleaming in the sunshine from where she stood just inside the doors to the stable. Her massive gatling like gun was still pointed at him with a smile.
” We'll tell you what we know about Vash, we just gotta get out of here. ” Jonas said as he motioned peacefully that he was going to grab his guns. The first shot rang out just after, splintering the wood of the door frame near where Alucard stood. ” But seriously. LETS MOVE! ” Jonas raised his voice as he took several steps towards Milly and the street before sliding in behind the large barn door to peek out. ” There's at least six or seven of them out here, and who knows how many coming down the hall. You two are going to have to hold that end. ” Jonas yelled back to Alucard and the dark haired woman.
” I'm Meryl, and if it gets me any information about Vash I'll help get you two out of this. ”Se said calmly as she slid across the open doorway to the other side of Alucard so they could both cover that entrance. |

Alucard looked over at Jonas as he announced that their path to escape had already been blocked off by enemies, “Guess we can't get out of here easy.” Alucard grabbed his jackal from the inside of his coat and braced himself against the doorway. “I hope their families don't have insurance policies with ya.” Peeking out the door, Alucard saw one bounty hunter had been following right behind them. Four gunshots echoed as Alucard spun into the doorway and shot at the hunter.
