  Chapter 1: The Invasion

In the distance the Dollet Bridge came into view, the stone structure spanning from the mainland to the island which actually made up the port of Dollet. The buildings that lined the streets were eerie and unusally quiet, Roland had remembered coming to Dollet as a child and walking this same road, how different that time was. An explosion jerked Roland back to the present, the plume of smoke billowing upwards from the far side of the bridhe. Ahead Roland caught sight of several Galbadian troops mobilizing at defensive positions just on their side of the bridge, they were preparing to make the push.
” Looks like they're waiting on us. ” Roland said as he moved quickly towards the piles of sandbags which were stacked shoulder high on the right side of the street, behind which several soldiers were gathered over a map. ” I guess that's a map of the other side of the bridge? ” He asked as he approached the others, getting no answer as he kneeled to take a look for himself. The map detailed several buildings which would likely be full of Dollet troops all who would have key strategic positions in the second stories as the rushed across the bridge. Roland knew they meant to gain a foot hold a size-able chuck of the soldiers would have to stay behind and lay down heavy cover fire as the fire team moved across and found cover.
” You're company 17 right? ” One of the soldiers spoke up, Roland replied with a nod. ” Good, you guys are going to be heading to the other side while we lay down cover fire. We believe you should be able to gain cover behind a over turned car right here. ” He continued as he pointed to a spot on the map, six or seven meters from the end of the bridge in the middle of the road. ” Once yo get across we'll concentrate our cover fire on your flank so you can enter that building and take out the Dollet troops in there, with that foothold we should be able to easily send in another wave until we force them to retreat. ” He finished, hoping that the plan had been made clear.

They would likely be briefed on their primary objective before they were sent off, and he didn't want to go in blind save for secondhand information. It was clear enough from a cursory glance that the enemy had fortified themselves on the other side of the bridge, though he couldn't tell the specifics from this distance. “This ought to be fun.” Lyner said sharply as they approached the bridge. Once they arrived he made a beeline for the group gathered near the sandbags, around what appeared to be a map. Once they arrived he took the chance to take in the details of the map before whistling enviously. If the enemy positions on the map were accurate any group that made an attempt to cross the bridge would be under heavy enemy fire, even if they were provided with covering fire along the way.

“Sounds easy enough.” Lyner boasted with a disarmingly calm smile, though he was certain that taking the bridge would be anything but. With that same smile still on his lips he put a hand on Roland's shoulder, squeezing lightly in order to get his attention. “Once we move out, keep your head down and don't stop moving.” It was best to leave it at that, so he stepped away and did one last check on his weapons before they set out. Even if they were meant to be little more than cannon fodder he had no plans of dying today, nor did he intend to let his friend go down either.

  Chapter 1: The Invasion

There was a calmness now as the first twelve soldiers of Company 17 came to understand their objective, the sense of their impending mortality hanging in the air. Roland nodded to Lyner as he spoke words of experience, this was comforting, he had always looked to Lyner for it. As the explosions and gunfight roared in the distance Roland readied himself and then taking the initiative started towards the bridge.
” Lets get this over with, lay down that cover! ” Roland said as he neared the bridge and not seconds later the rhythmic sound of gunfire erupted all around them. Roland watched as the bullets struck the upper stories of the buildings across the bridge, sending a haze of dirt and plaster into the air, it was time to move. ” Lyner let's go! ” The young soldier shouted as he started across the bridge, running as fast as he could which his body keeping low, using the left stone wall as cover and hoping that the cover fire would keep his right side safe. As he ran he heard a scream from behind but didn't stop to look, knowing that someone was hit, he knew it wasn't Lyner. It seemed like minutes but the crossing only took a few seconds and he was behind the car, gasping for breath ready to move into the house.

Lyner was rather tense even in the face of his prior experience, though he felt he hid it rather well. Not that it was abnormal for him to feel that way given the situation; a heavy sense of impending doom hung in the air, and for quite a few of them that was likely to be true. “Ready when you are,” he said to Roland with a faint smile while they were approaching the bridge. Part of him wanted to do something, anything in order to stop the kid from taking point. Lyner knew well enough that there wasn't anything he could do to convince him otherwise though.

As they made way toward the bridge he took on final glance to his pair of pistols, finding solace in their cold steel. These weapons had carried him through many battles, taken the lives of enemy combatants, and saved him on several occassions. They were witness to most everything he had been through in his military career, and a harsh reminder of all that he would have to do in order to atone for his sins. With that he steeled himself for the task at hand, having found his resolve to force his way through the dangers ahead.

Just a few steps ahead the kid called out for cover and when he did the surrounding soldiers broke into a dissonant chorus of gunfire. Once they did he charged forward in a mad dash while keeping his head low, staying close to the wall to cover his left side. A stray bullet struck the ground just to his right, and just a brief moment after that another flew by a few feet away from him… and then there was a scream of pain as it tore into one of their squad members. Lyner didn't dare turn to look, though he desperately wished he could have done something to help him.

It wasn't long before they reached the car, and when they did he crouched down next to Roland while taking deep breaths. Those breaths only made the burning in his lungs worse, but they didn't have time to wait for small things like comfort. Soon enough they would be making their way into the enemy's hideout. “If only I were five years younger.” Lyner said with a forced tone, offering the kid a half-assed grin. It was too much of a relief for him that they had both made it to restrain his glee.

  Chapter 1: The Invasion

There was gunfire all around them, it seemed to be the only thing that Roland could hear, the discord of gunfire pierced by an occasional scream. Roland knew what to do, he blocked it out, calming himself and took steady deep breaths, he could not afford to panic or loose his focus at a time like this. For all his inability to cope with the rules and regulations of military life there was always one thing that kept his superiors off his back, his natural ability to fight.
” Don't have a heart attack old man. Now let's get into that house! ” Roland said with confidence, returning the sly grin. Roland took a quick look to his right, his back against the van. Looking back towards the bridge he counted seven of the twelve sent across had made it and were now in cover, including Lyner and himself. ” Seven will have to do, we gotta clear out that sniper nest so we can get some more guys across that bridge so lets get a fucking move on! ” He shouted, feeling a surge of adrenaline.
Pointing to the door Roland motioned for one of the others to follow him and with a burst of speed he leapt from behind cover and dashed across the short distance. He knew they would have to get inside quick, and likely there would be at least a couple Dollet soldiers just inside the door waiting for them, it wouldn't be easy. Roland used the momentum he built running to ram the door splintering the lock and sending it pushing inward. Rolling he hit the ground hard and got as low as possible as the soldier who followed tossed a grenade into the adjoining room where sure enough two guards were on standby. Roland hand time to pull himself forward using a hallway wall for cover as the grenade exploded sending a hail of shrapnel flying.

“I'm not that old!” Lyner replied, still forcing that half-assed grin. As his friend tried to search for others who had made it to cover he tried to catch his breath. Then Roland made an attempt to rally the troops they still had left before they launched their attack. For a moment Lyner too was affected by his friend's effort to rally their unit, but he quickly shook it off. It was best to keep a clear head; amazing as the kid's natural leadership skills were, it was always his style to rely more on quick, level-headed thinking as opposed to a rush of adrenaline to get the job done.

Then they began the charge, the kid leading them with his youthful fervor. Just a few steps behind him was Lyner who, judging from his sharp expression, was prepared for the inevitable fight once they breached into the sniper nest. He wasn't the first, or the second, to enter into the enemy's base and as he entered the building an explosion rocked through it, someone had obviously thrown a grenade. “Oi! Don't blow the building to bits, we're supposed to establish a foothold here!” Lyner snapped angrily as he moved further into the building, pistols at the ready. Though his concerns for the building were true, he was more concerned that his friend might not have had time to get to cover without some kind of warning about the grenade. “Roland! You alright over there?!”

  Chapter 1: The Invasion

Roland clung to the hilt of his Galabadian military issue blade, his chest rapidly moving up and down as he attempted to catch his breath. As the smoke cleared he took a quick peek to his right around the hallway corner, it seemed clear. Turning to the left now he could see the stairs leading upwards and heard the heavy thud of a couple sets of boots moving towards the on the level above, they would descend quickly, they had to get cover now.
” I'm fine, there's trouble coming from upstairs get in cover now! ” Roland shouted before pulling himself around the corning into the room the grenade had just went off in seconds before. The moan of an injured Dollet soldier startled him but before he had time to act gunfire erupted from the stairway followed by a second grenade which rattled the entire house sending dishes and house items flying from their shelves. Roland knew the Dollet soldiers were coming down. He would wait, and hopefully catch them with their backs to him as the passed the doorway. Making eye contact with Lyner he motioned to lead them towards the front door if he could.

Lyner was ecstatic that he was alright, but this wasn't the time for dwelling on such things–he leaned against the wall as Roland called out for him to take cover, readying himself for the upcoming gunfight. Another grenade came down from the stairway, the explosion shaking the entire building; if they didn't settle this quickly there wouldn't be much of the building left. After the blast he made eye contact with his partner, who beckoned for him to make the first move. Lyner offered a quick nod before he twisted around the corner and prepared to make his move.

“Here goes nothing.” Lyner whispered and then twisted into the doorway with his weapons at the ready. In that instant everything seemed to slow down, and he aimed his sights upon the first dollet soldier he could see and let loose a single round from each pistol without ever pausing his movement. Experience had taught him never to stop moving in a gunfight, if only to make it a little harder for the enemy to hit him. It was still a big risk in tight quarters like these though, but he had faith that Roland would provide him all the backup he needed to get through this alive.

  Chapter 1: The Invasion

A plume of smoke danced through the room, the rays of sunlight pouring through the houses' shattered windows illuminating minute floating specks of dust. There was almost a calm now, everything was happening fast but Roland seemed to have a grasp on the situation. The sound of gunfire, back to back rounds, seemed to echo for minutes as did the screams of the falling Dollet soldier who had been struck by one of the rounds. The heavy footsteps rushed past the fallen soldier on the stairs, three men came for Lyner guns drawn ready to defend their homeland, willing to pay the ultimate price. Roland could almost sense their movement as he moved around the room, ducking into the connected kitchen, the floor covered with broken glass. He moved through the kitchen quickly, re-entering the connecting hallway at the foot of the stairs the soldiers had just descended. Before the could fire he leaped forward and even in the tight space gathered enough force from his blade to fell all the men, though the were not dead.
” Lyner, you ok? Did they get any rounds off at you?! ” Roland shouted over the screams of the injured men as ke kicked their weapons out of reach.
Briefly turning away he looked towards the stairs leading to the second story, one man was down bleeding out from Lyner's shot. Roland knew none of these men where the sniper, that meant he was still upstairs, and he would be waiting for them.
” Everyone get inside! ” Roland yelled out the door, hoping the six or seven other men who had made it across the bridge could maintain order downstairs while he and Lyner could figure out how to get up those stairs without getting blown away as soon as they poked their heads up.

Lyner didn't dare take cover, because he had absolutely faith that Roland wouldn't let him down; he was the distraction so that his friend could strike at the most opportune moment. As they came down there stairs they drew their weapons and trained the sights upon him. Once they did his heart began to beat faster, his instincts telling him to get low and take cover, but instead he just prepared to unleash a rain of bullets upon them. Just before they could do anything the kid emerged in a flash of steel, easily cutting down the three remaining enemy combatants. “Just fine! Nice timing!” Lyner shouted in reply, lowering his weapons and steadily making his way over to Roland (who was, at the time, barking orders at the others).

Once he made his way over to him he came to a stop, examining the staircase for a moment before sighing in frustration. There was no doubt in his mind that the sniper was still up there, likely waiting for them now too. If he had been among these soldiers they would have had more trouble than they did. “We've got our work cut out for us this time, don't we?” Lyner asked while offering a wide grin. “All I can think of if throwing a grenade up there, but I'm not sure how much more structural damage this place can take.”

  Chapter 1: The Invasion

Roland pondered the situation, thinking hard on how they could get upstairs without someone getting their head blown off. Going straight up the stairs was suicide so that simply was not an option and while a grenade would do the job Roland knew Lyner was right, another explosion in this house could ruin any strategic value it had, they would have to think of something else.
” Hold on a sec. ” Roland said as he started back through the hall, passing back through the open doorway into the kitchen which was at the back of the house. Looking out one of the cracked windows he could see the long row of buildings which followed the street had a small alleyway, perhaps 10 feet wide, between it and the row of buildings out behind it. Taking a few more steps Roland passed into a small laundry room which also housed the back door.
” Keep your eyes peeled! ” Roland shouted back through the kitchen as he exited the back door.
The alleyway was clear, each building having a small back stoop and a few stairs that led to the small path. Roland looked to his right, the alley ended with a tall fence, surely this was to keep people from falling into the straight which was bridged just outside. Looking up he could see a pair of windows big enough to climb through, that's how the would get upstairs. Rushing back inside, he led the back door close with a thud as he moved through the kitchen and back into the hall to address Lyner.
” I can climb up and go in through the window, it's most likely a bedroom meaning he won't be able to watch the stairs and the window at the same time, so find a mirror or something and figure out a way to keep an eye on him and if he moved towards the bedroom you ambush him and if not I'll take care of him. ” Roland said in a quiet voice, so the sniper would be unable to hear.

Lyner casually holstered his weapons as Roland left the room via the hallway, folding his arms while wondering what his friend had come up with. Whatever it was clearly required some legwork which gave him a bit of hope. Before long he rejoined the group, keeping his voice low while explaining the plan in order to avoid alerting their target. “I suppose we're in luck,” he replied quietly, reaching into the satchel on the back of his waist and removing a rectangular black case. Upon opening it he revealed finely crafted inspection mirror, with a rectangular lens for viewing around corners. “Never know when you'll need something.” he said with a smile before heading over to the stairs. While slowly ascending the stairs he unholsted the pistol from his right hip. Once he reached his destination he slowly began to move the mirror out in order to get a view of the target….

  Chapter 1: The Invasion

Roland nodded at his friend and mentor and turned around heading back the way he came, passing through the kitchen and the small laundry room to the back door. Exiting he made sure to check the alleyway, making sure that he was indeed alone. Feeling confident that no Dollet soldiers were in the alley he took hold of the banister that held the small roof overhang over the back stoop. Pulling himself upwards he quickly ascended and found himself outside of a closed window.
” I sure hope he's got eyes on that sniper. ” Roland said to himself as he peeked up and took his first gaze through the glass.
The room was dark but Roland could tell he was right, the outline of a bed frame visible in the dim light that poured in through the mostly shaded windows. Steadying himself with his left hand Roland pushed up slowly on the window, praying that it was unlocked. The window opened slightly, silently. Inching it open slowly revealed the empty bedroom. To his left a small stream of light trickled through a cracked door, it would surely lead to the upstairs hallway where he expected to find the sniper. The window now fully open Roland slowly entered the house again from the outside, being careful to be as quiet as possible. Lowering his feet he placed them on the floor which to his horror let out a loud squeak as he put his weight down.
” Fuck. ” Roland exclaimed before throwing himself across the room tumbled loudly behind the bed, which would not protect him from gunfire but would at least take him out of sight.
In the connecting hallway the noise startled the sniper, his focus on the stairs lost. The rifle drifted on instinct towards the noise, towards the far back bedroom. Tension mounting the sniper squeezed slightly, the massive bang echoing through the house as a round fired through the doorway into the bedroom, followed by the sound of shattering glass.

Lyner kept a keen eye on the sniper via the mirror, until he heard the creak of the floorboards. Immediately he knew that his friend's attempt to infiltrate the upstairs had failed, and his body moved on instinct. In a burst of motion he began to round the stairs, dropping the inspection mirror without a second thought. Once he caught sight of the sniper he trained his pistol upon the man, lining up the sight for a lethal shot while steadying the gun with his spare hand. In the back of his mind he recognized the sound of gunfire, followed by a shattering window but a rush of adrenaline prevented him from truly acknowledging it. Lyner began to unload his clip at the sniper, hoping he wasn't too late to save his friend.

  Chapter 1: The Invasion

The roar of gunfire pierced Roland's ears but as he hunkered down. He did not see or hear any nearby sounds of bullets penetrating wood or breaking glass, only the low thump that shook the floorboards, the sound of a man falling. As the gunfire stopped, almost comically Roland checked himself for holes and after enough time had passed assumed that his friend and mentor had come to his rescue, slaying the sniper and clearing the house in the process..
” You get the bastard Lyner? ” Roland shouted, peeking out towards the cracked doorway that would lead to the hallway where his friend was hopefully unharmed. ” Because if it's the other way around I'm going to blow your fucking head off. ” He added, expressing clearly that if it was Lyner who had fallen that hell was to be paid in return.

“Yeah,” Lyner called out to his friend while slowly approaching the sniper's body. “it's me, so please don't blow my head off. I've grown fond of it over the years.” he japed while turning the body over with his left foot, his pistol directed on the man all the while. If the man was alive he didn't intend to let him get the jump on them later. Once he had verified that the sniper was in fact dead he relaxed, holstering his pistol and crouching down to inspect his belongings. Nothing good would come of leaving anything of value with a corpse; the dead had no need of valuables where they were going.

Lyner hoped they might find something that could give them an edge in any further operations within the city. Once he was done searching the remains he took the sniper rifle in-hand and rose to his feet, gauging the weapon for a moment before calling out to Roland. “Roland, how many of our squadmates do you think this guy took out with this thing? I'm thinking we might use it to even the odds so to speak.” Lyner would normally abhor the concept, but the fact that they had lost several good men on their journey across the bridge left him wanting to take an eye for an eye.

  Chapter 1: The Invasion

The comforting sound of Lyner's raspy voice floated though the crack in the bedroom door, relieving Roland and lowing his heart rate. Pulling himself up Roland dusted himself off, the small particles of door and bed fabric being pierced by bullets having rained down on him in the chaos. Steadying himself Roland pulled the door open and stepped into the hallway, taking a moment to look back down the stairs as one of his squad mates was ascending.
” Shit, we really trashed this place. ” Roland said as he walked towards Lyner who was intently inspecting the dead sniper, reaching down and grabbing his rifle. Taking a few steps towards the end of the hall where the sniper had the window cracked and had been shooting down on the street and bridge below Roland thought it a good idea to signal to the commanding officers that they had secured the area. ” I say you cover the next group to come across. You never know there might be some more assholes waiting to pounce on them once we signal. ” Roland said as he motioned for the ascending Galbadian soldier who he noticed was wearing a communication pack to call it in.

“You're not kidding,” Lyner said with a chuckle. They hadn't exactly been very gentle with the building when they breached, and the previous occupants had been hell-bent on maintaining possession of it. “Good idea.” Lyner replied while reloading the rifle. “With any luck they'll get across without any trouble, but you're right, we can't risk losing the bridge. If they can't get across I doubt we'll be able to hold this position.” Once he was finished preparing the rifle he made his way to a window overlooking the only street that lead to the bridge, and began to survey the area for any possible targets. It felt odd to be using a sniper rifle after so long, but he didn't intend to let that stop him from securing their objective; if he saw an enemy he wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger.

  Chapter 1: The Exam

With the call having been made Roland moved back towards the large second story double window which looked out on the street and bridge. In the distance he could see a second squad of twelve moving down the stone structure that connected the mainland to the island that made up Dollet City. They were taking very little fire, as none of the other houses had a good view of the bridge besides the one across the street which was within the aim of the fortifications and heavy guns at the base camp on the far side of the bridge.
” Looks like they are having it a hell of a lot easier than we are. ” Roland said in a dry tone when the soldier with the communication pack approached.
” Orders are that we head out of the back alley and head towards the center of town. Commander says the squad crossing now is going to spear head that push and we're going to flank and Dollet troops that try to ambush them as we reach the square. ” the soldier spoke to both Lyner and Roland, before heading back down stairs to inform the three other survivors of their twelve man squad of their new orders. Looking at Lyner as the squad reached the street and the over turned car that had served as their own barrier Roland shrugged his shoulders and started to turn towards the stairs to descent when movement from the house across the street caught his eye.
” BIG GUN! ” He shouted pointing across the wide gap that seperated the two buildings where a Dollet Soldier was reading to fire a bazooka down at the squad below.

“Of course they are,” Lyner agreed while bearing down the sights in search of any potential prey. They weren't receiving much enemy fire though, and he wasn't sure that he would get the chance to use the rifle just yet. “we paved the way for them, and practically laid down the red carpet. Just because they don't know we're the real heroes here doesn't mean we aren't.” Once the soldier with the communication pack began to speak he removed himself from the sight, turning to listen to their next set of orders. They were to head out the back, make for the center of town, and flank any enemy forces that were waiting in ambush. They might as well have been more obvious about it and order them to cover their asses while the main force took all of the credit.

“My point still stands, Roland. If we hadn't taken this point our forces would've just sat on their hands until someone did.” Lyner said with a sigh, turning to the window in order to disassemble his new sniper rifle for transport when something in the building across the street caught his eye. Lyner quickly leaned forward and trained his sights upon the man across the street, only faintly acknowledging the sound of his protege's voice. If the enemy soldier were to successfully fire that thing they'd find themselves in hot water. Lyner exhaled while closing his left eye, and the view from his sniper scope became his world. Once he had the shot he pulled the trigger and the sound of the rifle left his ears ringing. Yet he reached for the side of his rifle and lifted the lever and pulled back, releasing the previous shell from the chamber and preparing to fire again. If there were any more threats present he wanted to be ready for them. “Roland, anything else you can see?”
