”  Yes, answers are exactly what we need. ” The words escaped Zakuro's mouth with a tinge of pain coloring them as he leaned slightly on Riku, falling in step with his friend as they moved past the remains of the fires, which hand engulfed much of the camp. They followed the small stream that cut through the camp, past the building they had been asleep before, the roof of which was now charred and smoking, but otherwise undamaged.
” Come old friends. ” Adachi said as he reached the two, his face covered in sweat from his chase through the woods.  The woman, we all need to seek her, only see can explain what we all saw in the mori tonight. ” He continued as he led them to the far end of the camp where a wide, well worn path, curved along the bank of the stream along the edge of the far forest. It circled around a grove of trees into another clearing where one stone hut with candle light in the window stood. At the door one of Adachi's man stood with a lantern talking to someone in shadow, the old woman.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 2

Riku helped Zakuro as they made the way to the camp,
“Let's just hope the answers make sense.” Said Riku as they continued through the camp. Riku looked upon the remains on the remains of the fire and wondered what had gone on since they were gone. Had they fought people similar to he and Zakuro had fought or was the change due to the answers that Adachi was hiding. “I hope someone can make sense of this.” Riku said as he followed behind Adachi towards what was hopefully some clarity.

Adachi and his follower stepped away, clearing the path for Riku and Zakuro to move towards the stone house on their own. The samurai looked over to Riku, sensing that they would perhaps finally understand the events of the past few days. Taking a step, feeling the burn of the arrowhead lodged in his shoulder, Zakuro started forward, towards the silhouette in the light of the door which moved inwards as they approached.

The interior of the small stone structure was mostly what Zakuro was picturing from the outside. It was cluttered and tight, a small walkway leading from the door inwards towards the circular main area which was centered around the fire. The old woman, her hair wild and gray, sat on the far side of the fire beaconing them inward, the shadows of the flames dancing around her.
” I've been waiting for you, the both of you. ” She said in a low voice, raspy with age.  You've seen the taint that has spread, it has touched both of you, you know the danger that it represents, yet you seek something, direction? ” The old woman seemed to be talking to herself almost but clearly she was asking them as well. Zakuro looked to Riku, his shoulder still burning, trying to focus. “ How can I aide you? ” She finally asked, her eyes showing the hope that they would ask the right questions.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 2

Riku continued towards the house, his mind racing one what would come next. Though it had only been 2 days, so much had happened between him and Zakuro. They sought answers and as they approached he realized just how short of time had past for them. So much has happened, but he still he lacked so much knowledge that questions became difficult to form. Riku sat down across from the old woman, offering Zakuro aid should he require due to the arrow.
“We seek knowledge on the origin of the taint and how to stop the spread, but I miss insist on one thing before we continue.” Riku looked towards Zakuro for a moment than to the woman, “I believe it was your salve that aided me early. My friend has a wound.” Riku gestured to his shoulder, “Could you aid us is properly dressing the wound before we continue?” Riku understood the importance of this moment, but also knew that Zakuro would be more important to their journey than any answers.

”  I'll me alright until we're through here. ” Zakuro said as he moved to the opposite side of the fire from the old woman, lowering himself slowly into a sitting position on his knees while trying to move his shoulder as little as possible. ”  Please, show us the direction we need, what is the origin of the taint? ” Zakuro reiterated Riku's question, hoping to get the answers first.
” Direct and to the point, I should expect nothing less of Otomo's best men. ” The old woman said in her raspy voice as she leaned into the smoke coming from the fire. ” The source is a story for another day, from another time. However it's return is linked closer to you are your clan that you may realize. ” She said as she reached to a small tray that was at her side on which Zakuro noticed charred ashes. ” Look closely young men, these ashes are from the archer that Adachi and his men felled in the woods before you arrived. As I'm sure you saw they quickly turned to ash, necromancy is old magic but the symbol on the physical scroll used to animate such creatures should seem familiar. ” She finished as she thrust the tray of ashes forward to them, inside of which a burnt edge of scroll held the Otomo clan crest in what appeared to be charred dried dark crimson of blood.

Sengoku ~ Chapter 2

Riku stared in disbelief at the symbol in front of them. Had the Daimyo's own clan ordered his assassination or were they forced to assassinate them after death. Riku felt light headed for a moment as the implications of the symbol came over him in waves. Riku looked towards Zakuro more out of knowing he was there than actually seeing him. His eyes seemed to look past him as they took in nothing around them.
“His own clan…” A single deep breath brought Riku back to the present, his head snapping back towards the woman. “Are they the source or the…victims?” Riku didn't know which he hoped to hear.

Zakuro sat motionless in disbelief from what he saw in the charred ashes the old woman had thrust at them. There it was, plan as day, in nothing less than blood—The Otomo clan crest. It was clear to Zakuro even as Riku's question escaped his lips that this was the source. He lit the silence linger awhile as he let the events all play again through his mind, before turning to Riku.
”  We have to go back, we have to find out what this means and who is behind this. ” Zakuro said, he's eyes on fire and full of seriousness. ”
” Now, let me see your wound. ” The old woman said as she got slowly to her feet and made her way around the fire, sensing that the two men would soon want to be on their way again.
