At the age of fourteen Zakuro found himself enlisted as an ashigaru for the Hirosaki clan, who at the time were struggling to retain their lands against the Morioka clan. Distinguishing himself over the next few years the young Zakuro eventually earned to praise of Samurai Sato Ichiro who took him as an apprentice, having no children of his own. Zakuro learned much from his master, training in the arts of kenjustu, laido, fue, and hokku eventually becoming a Samurai himself, serving under Daimyo Hirosaki Kaii. Zakuro served faithfully to his Daimyo from the age of twenty-three until the age of twenty-eight when through the means of betrayal Hirosaki Kaii was assassinated by one of his own Samurai who had defected to serve the Tokugawa. Shamed by his inability to protect his master, Zakuro retreated to Higashi-Naruse where he contemplated his future as a Ronin, knowing that some day he would have to seek penitence for his failures by exacting revenge on the Tokugawa.
