Hello all!

This is a brief interest check for an as-yet unnamed fantasy game I'm working on. It is based heavily on old dungeon crawl computer games from the late 80's and early 90's, updated to be fun and accessible to the message board RP crowd! It places a heavy emphasis on character customization; As of right now there are six racial classes, six base classes, and you can even take levels in multiple classes to unlock powerful advanced classes, of which there are currently 12! With an ability to switch out classes as you master them and continue gaining levels as long as you want to, the potential is nearly limitless. There is also the possibilty of more races and classes being added to the game before the site opens, and even in the course of play.

I've tried to break a few of the typical fantasy molds without simply flipping and reversing the old tropes, and hopefully have created a fun, unique take on some old ideas. If you are interested or have any questions, please feel free to post in this thread! I hope to have a system and the introductory adventures ready to go within a month, depending on how much time I have between work, social life and classes. Mostly I'm just wanting to gauge general interest at this point.

I think it sounds like a pretty great idea. I love those kind of games, the early AD&D ones and so on. I'd be interested in seeing how it comes together and possibly joining. D20 based? Considering it's based on older games I think it'd be cool to do a AD&D v1 or v2 style setup. (I've played v1 a good deal before, the general atmosphere of the earlier guides and rules are just cooler than the 3.5 and 4.0 stuff.)

Cool, cool, cool. However, maybe this should be posted on the main DysPro forums for the few people there that don't play here.

Dystopia:

It won't be d20 based. I play a lot of Pathfinder, but I'm actually not super keen on the d20 system (I don't hate it, but it's not something that would work for this game since it doesn't have that “old school” feel). I've borrowed some of the things I like about it, but it's going to have its own system. The primary rolls will be made with a d10 + modifiers, so in that respect it does share a large similarity with the d20 system. But there won't be things like ability score modifiers: if you have an 18 in something, that's what you add to your rolls instead of say, +4. I'm trying to keep needless math to a minimum so people can just focus 10% on calculations and 90% on playing their characters and having fun.

Magic will also have MP rather than spells per day, and I'm trying very hard to make sure caster Vs. martial class balance doesn't get out of hand in later levels like it can in d20. Casters are going to be very powerful at mid-to-high levels, but this will be balanced out with a very tight MP budget, so spells will have to be cast carefully. Some of the bigger, nastier spells will cost as much as half your total MP, so you'll have to really think about whether the big payoff is worth risking so much of a resource. You don't regain MP after an encounter unless you have items to do it with; otherwise, if you run out in a dungeon or something, you're out until that particular roleplaying scene is over. MP regen items will cost more than your standard HP potions. They also won't get a ton of HP, and armor and weapon options are slim. So while spellcasters will be powerful, versatile and extremely valuable in party, they will need to work together with other classes to really be effective. Being able to call down a meteor storm isn't really helpful when the other party's fighter gacks you in two turns.

Fevian:
Noted! I didn't really think about that. I have some replies to do here, so I'll probably take your advice once I'm done with them. Thanks for pointing that out!

I love fantasy roleplays! While I never played Tabletop games I'm more than willing to join another good fantasy site! Count me in! :'D

Awesome! I'd be glad to have you. What types of characters do you typically like to play in fantasy settings?

Sounds good to me. I like the use of MP over spells per day, I think that will be a lot easier to manage from a member point of view.
