Side Quest ~ The Last Stand

The sun was setting upon the western sea adorning the sky with fire, foreshadowing the flames that would set Fort Tamblin alight before the sun would rise again in the east. Dai sat high on the one of the rock outcroppings that jutted from natrual rock formations that protected the fort from the sea, thinking about the battle that was sure to happen this night. ShinRa had been pushing closer and closer to Wutai over the years and now only Fort Tamblin stood between their invading army and the city where Dai was born, the only home he had ever known. The fort was built in a natural choke point, the only pass through the towering mountains, if it fell ShinRa would take Wutai.
” It's going to be a long night, Kyo. Hopefully our trap works and we can survive to see another morning. ” Dai looked over his shoulder, as he spoke, feeling little hope that what they had been tasked to do would actually work in the face of those monsters—SOLDIER. ” We should probably get going, get our final briefing. ” Dai continued as he got to his feet carefully, the last light of day now fading. The Five Saints would be waiting for them.

Side Quest ~ The Last Stand

Kyo Tsumetai gazed along the length of his pristine Murasame, checking the quality of its reflection against the horizon as he had just finished sharpening and cleaning the katana. With a steady eye he double checked the radiant materia that were embedded along the core of the blade, which were much closer to the handle and guard than the tip. He hesitated in response to his comrade, reflecting momentarily on the past chain of years that had led him to this moment. He'd been in the war for about a decade, ever since his mid teens, and he'd gotten used to life on the battlefield. Most of clan Tsumetai had disappeared, and he was pretty sure he no longer had anyone to go back to. Still, Wutai was his home, and he wasn't about to let anyone bring its people any harm. A brief flash of a familiar girl suddenly pierced his mind, her face shrouded and heavily blurred except for her warm smile.

The moment passed, and he found himself staring down the keen edge of Murasame. “Yeah…” He finally responded as though his head had been in the clouds. The raven haired man then sheathed his katana with a swift and fluid motion, resting the blade in its dark elegant scabbard on the left side of his hip. He then bent down and scooped up his four-point shuriken onto his back, which had been leaned against the large rock he'd been sitting on while he maintained his gear. With one final glance he gazed back across the sea as the fading light mixed with the clouds and turned into a cascade of dark purple, fully prepared to accept that this could be the last sunset he might ever see. He was ready to give his life for Wutai. “Let's go, Dai.” Kyo then turned and nodded at the man before he finally set off with his comrade toward whatever fate destiny had in store for him.

The night was setting in on Wutai as Dai found the path and set upon it back towards Fort Tamblin whose lights could be seen down in the valley below. Across the field that was laid out in front of the fort there was only darkness but beyond it in the forests there were many lights coming on, that's where ShinRa had been camped and soon they would launch their attack on Wutai's last strong hold.
” I can only imagine what they'll expect of us this time, I hope they have something left up their sleeves. ” Dai spoke, his voice wavering as he wasn't very optimistic that they could do anything against those SOLDIER. They were physically gifted but also equipped with the best materia that anyone could possess due to ShinRa's command over the mako. He would have to trust the elders though, it's all he could do.

Ahead of them the path began to twist and turn around tall old trees that smelled of pine as it led them to the rear of the fort. The smooth stone walls towered above them as Dai led Kyo through a paved court, through a tall torii gate, then into the manor where the Five Spirits formed their strategy. Dai removed his geta and entered through the sliding door. The short corridor was clean and uncluttered and led past several other sliding doors before reaching the central room. A large wide hardwood table dominated the center of the room, cluttered with maps and markers. The Five Spirits and their aides, who surrounded the table, stopped speaking as Dai and Kyo entered. Dai slowed to a stop, lowering himself to his knees and bowed to the leaders of Wutai.

Kyo followed alongside Dai while his left palm rested upon the pommel of Murasame. “I'm sure they've thought of something…” He tried to act confident, but shared the concern of his companion. The sight of so many ShinRa campfires made him itch for battle, yet even with Leviathan at his side he knew he wouldn't be able to vanquish all of them. That wasn't even including the monstrous SOLDIERs. It made him desire more power, to obtain enough strength to defeat his enemies and save his people. He sighed and gazed upwards to the stars that had begun to reveal themselves in the night sky as they stepped through the torii gate and approached the manor.

Fort Tamblin had become his home away from home, and he couldn't shake the feeling that something awful was about to happen to it. He respectfully removed his excessively tall knee-high boots alongside his comrade at the manor's genkan, then stepped up onto the fine wood floor and proceeded toward the main room with him. Once they arrived Kyo mirrored Dai's actions, humbly moving to his knees and bowing his head as he silently awaited the command of the Five Spirits.

” Get up, get up! There is no time for that now. ” A powerful commanding voice spoke out above all of the commotion in the room, directed at Kyo and Dai. ” ShinRa is beginning it's assault, time is of the essence.  ” the man continued to speak as he moved from behind the large oaken planning table and started towards the two who had just arrived.
Godo Kisaragi was a stout, powerful looking man. His face chiseled and stern, he carried a weight of seriousness with him. Dai quickly started to rise to his feet as Godo rushed to them, his flowing blue gi brushing Dai as Godo grasped him with one hand and Kyo with the other, lifting them both to their feet. This was the leader of Wutai.
” Everything is almost in order, the crescent unit will herd ShinRa's forces, it's SOLDIER, into our trap. You two must set that trap, and quickly. ” Godo was speaking rapidly as he was walking now, back to the large table, pointing at the maps of Fort Tamblin that were laid out. ” You two must transport the creatures to this spot, the choke point. I trust none of our other fighters with them. ” the man was speaking fast, clearly stressed but still in complete control, commanding the room. ” You'll find them chained in the caves behind the fort, you must hurry. And be careful! ” Godo was waving his hand at them now, as if he was done speaking and expected them to turn and quickly get to their task. Dai gave a light bow and the turned back towards the entrance, quickly covering the ground between the planning room and the sliding paper door, slipping into his geta as he exited back into the warm night.

The meeting went about as well as Kyo could've hoped. He quickly noted the locations around the objectives that Godo pointed out for them, and immediately began to search his mind for any other strategies he could formulate to assist their plan. The inquisitive ninja was still uncertain of some of the variables, and considered asking for clarity, but if ShinRa's forces were already beginning then he knew there wasn't enough time to spare. With a quick and affirmative nod he lightly bowed and departed alongside Dai, still uncertain as to whether or not he believed in his leader's strategy.

The plan ran back through Kyo's mind as he tried to process all the possible ways their mission could go. He moved with a swift and silent step in his soft black tabi, then took a moment to slip back into his knee-high boots once he made it back to the manor's entrance. “What do you think?” He tried to hide the concern in his deep bassy voice while he slid the paper door shut behind them. “Will those things be enough?” The raven-haired young man then swept his right hand out across the long tail end of his jet black coat that stuck out from the bottom of his sleek and light chest armor, which caused the unarmored length to billow out behind him as he leaned forward and quickly began to head toward to their first objective.

Dai moved quickly back through the torii gate into the large open courtyard, which was now devoid of all movement, still. For a brief moment the young man looked up at the night sky, alight with stars that you could no longer see from the city. He was brought back to reality quickly when the sound of gunfire began to echo from the distance, the battle had started.
” Let's go, we just have to trust that whatever Godo has planned is the best option. ” Dai replied, trying to believe it himself but unsure what could stop a SOLDIER.
Dai picked up the pace, taking up a light jog as he waved for Kyo to follow him into the narrow valley behind Fort Tamblin which a single road snaked through to reach the city of Wutai. He knew this road well, as did he  the cave Godo had spoken of before, it was only a few hundred meters away. The cave entrance was large and partially covered by trees and bushes, but there was a clear path in. Dai reached in the small satchel he had strung though his belt and removed a small flashlight which, with a click, cast deep black shadows of the trees and bushes along the tall rock wall the cave opening entered into.
” The elites use this place as a training ground, but I'm sure you're aware of that. ” Dai joked as he started into the dark mouth of the cave, feeling the unhewn rock with his hands as he walked in, wondering what Godo had left for them inside.

“Yeah…” Kyo hesitated and looked back in the direction of Fort Tamblin, feeling a terrible swell of apprehension in the pit of his chest. He did his best to shake the feeling, not wanting to dwell upon the fate of the stronghold, then stepped into the cave a few paces behind his comrade. “I've been here one or two times.” Kyo lightly joked in response to Dai before he cautiously proceeded further into the cave behind his partner. A tidal wave of memories flashed through his mind as he matched Dai's pace. He tried to push them away and ignore them, choosing to focus on the mission at hand instead. The cusp of his left hand steadily grasped the mouth of Murasame's scabbard and pressed against the guard in such a way that he could swiftly draw the blade at any moment if need be.

“I like to think it's more than my connection to my father that earned me this blade and the command of Leviathan.” Kyo referred to his extensive training and accomplishments throughout the war, maintaining a calm and steady tone as he was not quite as phased by the subject of his missing family as he used to be. “Maybe one day I'll even find you to be worthy as my successor, and I'll pass them down to you.” He faintly smirked and let out a slight chuckle, not intending to tease or belittle his comrade. It wasn't often he boasted about his place among the other elites, a clear sign that he was nervous and making the effort to downplay his concerns.

The light from the small flashlight illuminated the rough unhewn walls of the cave that twisted and turned ahead of them as the two walked. Dai knew from experience that the tunnel would soon open into a expansive underground cavern, the perfect place for some of the most elite and experienced fighters from Wutai to unleash their full magical and physical forces without doing damage to anything important.
” You talking to yourself back there? ” Dai joked and let out a laugh which was caught in the height of the tunnel and approaching cavern and echoed ahead of and behind them. He had forgotten how odd the acoustics of this place could be. ” Do you hear that? ” Dai said after his laughter faded and the jangly clanking of metal against metal started to dance through the tunnel, coming from the chamber ahead. ” It sounds like chains ” He continued as he turned a tight corner and met the faint glow of torch light in the distance.

Dai came to a sudden stop as he reached the large central chamber from where the fire light emanated. Ahead, bound with massive chain linked manacles, two massive ogres sat facing each other on the leveled rock floor of the cavern. Dai had known of these creatures, they roamed the wilderness and mountains of his homeland and were known to be somewhat intelligent, even if at most it was that of a simple child. The fact that Godo had captured two of them, and event bound them in size appropriate armor was somewhat of a revelation for the young man.
” Looks like this is Godo's plan, how do we get these two back to the fort though? ” Dai said as he still stood motionless at the entrance to the large chamber, unsure how they were suppose to get these things to follow them.

“Don't tell me…” Kyo kept his voice down as he softened his steps and slowed to a stop on the other side of the chamber's entrance from Dai. “These things! Isn't his own kid around there?” The young man clenched his teeth with disapproval and grabbed one of the spokes of his four-point shuriken from his back with his right hand. The weapon's bladed points gleamed for a brief second as he lowered it to his right side and took a single step forward to peek around the room. After a quick glance for anything that might aid them he then stepped back beside the entrance and looked over at Dai from the corner of his eye.

“Break or release the chains. We'll deal as little damage to the targets as possible, and lure them back to the objective area.” His eyes then darted back to the large monsters in the center of the chamber. “I'll slow them down.” He flicked his wrist and spun the shuriken in his hand for a second then stopped as he firmly grasped it by one of its handles. “If these things start to pose a threat to any of our people then we'll have to be prepared to intercept.” Kyo tilted his head to Dai, and kept an eye on the creatures before them. “Ready?”

” Just cut the chains and be done with it?! ” Dai said in response, as he looked on the hulking ogres who seemed to be unaware or simply just not care about their presence in the cavern at all. ” You really think we can handle these two.. creatures? On our own if they decide they don't want to listen to us? I mean, Godo thinks they are a match for a SOLDIER! ” Dai continued as he looked back towards Kyo who tilted his head as if he was sure he was a match for both of the fiends.” I guess I'm going to trust you on this one, but this is all you. ” Dai finally finished saying what he had to say as he started into the chamber, doing his best to be as quiet as possible as he had no desire to tempt the creatures. When he reached the base of their chains, he shot a quick look back at Kyo before grasping the massive clasp the held them in place, and with a feat of strength he opened iit and released the two fiends from their anchor, hoping that Kyo would be able to gain their attention and get them both to follow him back through the twisting labyrinth of the caves.

“It's worse than all that. The more we hurt these things, the less effective the overall strategy will be, and the more likely Wutai will be to fall.” Kyo muttered to himself, and narrowed his gaze on the pair of creatures. “Everything has come down to this. If this mission fails, and Wutai loses, then it could be on me…” He spoke under his breath and was clearly disgruntled by the situation as he furrowed his brows in concentration. A massive burden felt as though it had fallen upon his shoulders. Everything rested on this.

As soon as Dai began to move into the large chamber Kyo spun his four-point shuriken and slapped it onto the small clasp on his upper back. He then mashed his fists together, extended his index and middle fingers straight up, and began to channel the essence of his shuriken's Time materia throughout his body. “We'll need to be quick.” The energy coalesced around his core, then clicked and ticked like clockwork gears as it transformed into a golden clock-like ring and sped up around him. Kyo could immediately feel the rush inside him, his azure eyes still fixated to the two creatures that had begun to realize they were unchained.

Without hesitation he then repeated his actions with haste, nearly performing his casting motions at double the speed as he bestowed Dai with the same beneficial boon. “We should be fast enough to dodge and outpace most of their attacks if I can get them slowed.” He hoped. “We shouldn't actually have to engage them as long as we can keep our people out of harm's way.” He raised his voice so Dai could hear him, then grasped his shuriken from his back once more, and very quickly whipped it down to his right side as he readied himself to sprint back through the tunnel. “Stay ahead of me and you should be safe. Divert anyone you can away from us. I'll be right behind you with these two.” Kyo wasn't completely confident in the plan, but he was out of options. He steeled his resolve, and his serious expression became full of forced determination.

There was a wave of sensation that washed across Dai as the haste spell began to take effect. He felt time slow, knowing from past experience that his own focus and movements had grown faster, even though the sensation was that everything around him moved in slow motion. He watched as the two massive creatures became aware of himself and Kyo, to him slowly picking themselves up from the rock floor. They lifted their arms, seeing they were free of the chains that had bound them and then looked at both Dai and Kyo, rage growing in their dark eyes. Dai moved quick, much quicker than he even realized, back towards the entrance into the large chamber.
” We've got their attention, let's go! ” Dai said, weary of the sound of his own voice as it seemed different, as if he experienced the motion and waves in the air differently now. Dai didn't wait for Kyo to respond, he knew the hulking creatures would follow, he took to the tunnel at full speed. Dai didn't slow, taking the twists and turns of the tunnel with as much speed as he could until he was once again in the open air, looking down the valley road back towards Fort Tamblan, hoping Kyo had the situation under control.

The rage that boiled in the eyes of the hulking ogres made Kyo aware that he wouldn't need any advanced tactics to secure their aggression and Slow them at the same time. With great haste he spun forward and reared his right arm back, nearly ready to throw his four-point shuriken at them in order to debilitate them with its slowing effect, when suddenly a familiar scent pierced the fetid odor of the massive beasts. “Is that…?” He sniffed the air and glanced around the room once again, this time focusing in on a long and wide wooden box at the side of the cavernous chamber. He then looked back to the ogres that moved in slow motion compared to his hasted self, and then once again looked over at the box that reeked of raw fish.

“Of course!” Kyo exclaimed to himself as he dashed, slid, and stood to a stop in front of the container that was once used to store rations and supplies for the elites that trained in the caves. “It only makes sense that we'd be feeding you two.” A newfound hope blossomed throughout Kyo, and he suddenly felt as though the tension of his heavy burden had eased up. He turned his gaze back to the ogres, and watched them begin to move toward him at a sluggish pace. “You're both already pretty slow as is. Any more and we might not make it back in time…”

The raven-haired young man then quickly turned back to the chest and lifted back its lid with his left hand as his right set his four-point shuriken back onto its clasp near his shoulder blades. A foul miasma flowed forth from the box as Kyo found a single large fish husk in the container that was about the size of his torso. The dense stench nearly overwhelmed him, causing him to gag into his right inner elbow as he tried to block the powerful smell from his nose. A distasteful expression soured across his face for a brief moment, then he shook it away and bent at the hips to reach into the container and grasp at the fish. His hands slipped across the damp scales until he finally managed to gain purchase around the part of the tail that met the start of its fin.

Kyo grunted and groaned through his teeth as he arched back and heaved the hefty carcass up out of the box to sling its mass over his right shoulder with a slimy slap. His left hand quickly left the lid and joined his right hand to counterbalance the fish and pull its tail slightly more forward to his frontside so that the bulk of the weight balanced on his shoulder. With the fish in a more comfortable position he then took his left hand off of it and swept it down across the right side of his hip to snatch up the small black flashlight that was clipped there. He then looked back at the ogres, who were much closer to him than before. “Time for dinner!” Kyo yelled at the massive creatures as he turned to the tunnel and swiftly dashed into it. His left thumb activated the flashlight, and he did his best to hold it steady as he hurried through the labyrinthine caves with just enough of a tactical pace that the ogres would be able to follow him out.

The steady thunderous sounds of battle from the nearby fort were twisting and turning their way through the narrow valley as Dai exited through the large mouth of the cave. Everything was still moving slowly around him, and as he turned his head to look back into the darkness in search of Kyo he saw the low round glow of his flashlight bobbing up and down as he ran, no doubt leading the towering fiends in tow.
” Come on, get them moving, we have to hurry! ” Dai yelled back towards the cave as he knew the battle at Fort Tamblain was more than underway, they had to get these mountain ogres to the choke point where the Crescent Unit was pushing the ShniRa forces too, it was their only hope of winning this battle and staving off the inevitable SinrRa victory until another day.
Ahead Dai eyed the path as he ran, listening for the sounds of Kyo and the beasts behind him, hoping to reach the gate into the fort first so that his ally could simply continue to lure them directly into the center point of the citadel. As he reached the paved courtyard they seemed to have passed through only moments before, he saw the massive doors and with as much quickness as he could still muster he darted to the cranks which would pull the towering red doors open.

Kyo panted as he ran with the heavy fish over his shoulder, seldom glancing back to make sure the ogres hadn't lost interest and continued to chase him. He swiftly slid around the corner of the valley and shot his gaze up to the fort as Dai disappeared in the direction of the mechanism to open the large red doors. The distant sounds of battle and pillars of smoke were distorted in slow-motion to his hasted senses. The young man froze as an anxious chill rippled across his skin, and he could feel his heart sink as though deep down he already knew the inevitable outcome of the war. Resistance was futile.

The booming roar of the ogres snapped Kyo out of his stupor. “Tch!” He shifted his attention to them in time to leap out of their way, and began to sprint toward the entrance of Fort Tamblin with his mind focused on the mission. He wasn't sure how much longer his haste would last on himself and Dai, hoping that it would at least get them to the objective location before they returned to normal speed. With any luck there wouldn't be anyone in their way. Kyo kept an eye out for his partner as he swiftly made his way into the war torn fort, hoping that Dai would be able to redirect any allies or enemies that might show up along their path.
