  Kalm Before The Storm
Tsuna followed to party back to the hotel, seeing the wisdom in not speaking too much outside. The walk back wasn't far and before long Tsuna found himself in their room. Taking a seat at the edge of the bed, he nodded his head in agreement with Raiden's plan. “If we can setup a good position in the mountain, we may be able to set them up in a choke point, making their numbers worthless. If the layout is setup well enough, we may be even able to hit them from two sides with possible traps before we even fight them directly. Raiden probably has to best idea for now. It is late and we may even get an idea while we sleep.” Tsuna paused and seeing Raiden was taking his own advice looked at Cloud, “Feel free to go to sleep now. I wish to do one more pass of the area before bed.” Tsuna didn't know exactly how their talks went with the ShinRa dogs, but he was going to make sure as was well.

Chapter 3: Kalm Before the Storm

Cloud nodded as both of his friends seemed to be in agreement that using the mine as a strategic advantage over the probably squad of SOLDIER would be the best option for resucing their friends, if they were indeed with this party. Cloud felt a surge of tiredness begin to rush over him, spurring a quick look at the clock which hung on the wall over the door, which read one o'clock in the morning.
” Alright, I like it in principle, though in the morning we will clearly have to do some asking around about the mines as well as attempt to get a more exact time of arrival out of those two Shinra officials. ” Cloud said, fatigue clear in his voice as he did so. ” I imagine miners head out early, so we get up early, at five, before they leave. Tsuna if you would ask the night desk woman to wake us at five when you head out. ” He finished as he sat down on his own bed, twisting his body for a moment to close the window. With a yawn Cloud leaned back, slowly drifting off.

In his sleep he had dreams of days gone by, when things were simpler and much more profitable. Memories blazed through one after another: his recruitment into the Turks, the days when his mentor taught him the skills to survive, and something unfamiliar came to mind. A memory of betrayal, of being drugged and left to die… of the night of the fire in the Shinra Mansion. Just as it was becoming more clear to him a feeling of dread overwhelmed him, and he woke with a start.

For a moment Raiden thought his heart was about to tear itself free from his chest, but a few deep breaths later his heart seemed to calm itself. “What was that?” he asked himself, trying hard to shake off that feeling of dread from his dream. Whatever happened that night was important to why he had been left to burn in that fire. 'Seems even my own mind is intent on keeping the truth from me.' Raiden thought bleakly as he stumbled out of bed, trying to ignore the pounding in his head. It was still pitch black outside, and his eyes were still adjusting to the darkness after waking up….

Tsuna gave Cloud a nod as he moved towards the window of their room. The window opened quietly as Tsuna crept through it and grabbed the top of the window from the outside. CM-3 didn't want people who didn't need to know his comings so he moved like so. With swift movements, Tsuna scurried up to the top of the building to take his watch for the next four hours. With such an important day tomorrow, Tsuna didn't want to leave waking everyone in the hands of someone else. it was imperative that they woke up on time and Tsuna was going to make sure. Tsuna sat cross legged as he watched over the time.

The air grew a little colder until the sun began to rise in the distance. Knowing someone sitting on a roof would look odd, Tsuna moved back down through the window without a noise and saw there was still a few moments before the time to wake up. Tsuna watched the clock like a hawk to give his allies as much sleep as they could go. As soon as a clock stuck 5 Tsuna moved over and gave each a tap on the shoulder,
“It is time to wake.” Tsuna sat and waited for his allies to be ready to see what they could learn before their attack.

Chapter 3: Kalm Before the Storm

Cloud opened his eyes, the room still shrouded in darkness as the sun had yet to rise. Feeling the fatigue of the past few weeks still on him he pulled himself up, taking a breif moment to sit on the edge of the bed and fully wake. Reaching his hand, fumbling for a moment, he found the bedside lamp and turned it on with a click illuminating the room. Cloud squinted his eyes in pain as the shock of the light constricted his pupils and then he stood.
” Once we gear up, one of us should probably pay those two Shinra officials a visit and find out when that squad is expected, and likely make sure they don't have a chance to spoil our plan in any case. ” Cloud spoke, taking a moment to look each of his friends in the eye, trying to decide which one of them would volunteer for this task first, knowing he had a great distaste for Shinra. The other two will need to find some miners and just get a general idea of what to expect with the mines, as well as pick up any equipment we might need. ” Cloud finished as he began to lace his heavy boots and when finished then strap on his harness which would hold his Buster Sword.

Raiden couldn't help but cringe as the room was suddenly illuminated; not only did it take a moment for his eyes to adjust, but the light only made his headache even worse. With a groan of pain he collapsed back onto his bed, rubbing his temples in a desperate effort to alleviate the ache. “Wait, what Shinra officials?” Raiden questioned before letting out yet another groan. “Okay no, I remember.” It was half-true, at least, he remembered the general idea of what had happened last night… just not the finer points of the evening.

“Which idiot had that idea to begin with?” Raiden asked as he begrudgingly pulled himself away from the bed, once more getting to his feet. “I mean it was a stroke of brilliance, but… very risky.” At that he groaned yet again as whose idea it had been came back to him. “Nevermind, I'm the idiot. I'll deal with the two from last night. Gotta clean up my own messes….”

Tsuna nodded in agreement. He automatically became one in the party to address the miners. His suit would probably be out of place with them, but he wouldn't allow someone else's lack of class take away from him. That was one thing ShinRa could not take from him. “When you are ready Cloud, we can head out and see what the miners can tell us. I suggest you take the lead, they may be less likely to converse with me due to my attire.” Tsuna looked down at his suit and adjusted it so it was correct and played with his top hat. His cane tapped the floor lightly, “I may just need to have a look for myself.” Tsuna eyes turned fierce with his drive to do damage to ShinRa.

Chapter 3: Kalm Before the Storm

The feeling of fatigue was hanging with Cloud, though his sickness has passed weeks before he believed the fatigue to be a lingering effect, along with the turbidness that clouded his memories. Cloud took another moment, turning from the eyes of his friends as staring past the items that surrounded him, somewhere out there he could feel his presence.
” Ok, I'm ready. We'll meet back here in what, an hour or so? ” Cloud spoke rhetorically, knowing that all of them could achieve their goals before the sun would rise. As he walked towards the door Cloud held out his hand, grasping the hilt of his Buster Sword which he lifted and carefully strapped into his harness before turning to Tsuna. I'm sure you won't be the first well dressed guy asking questions about the mines that they've ever seen, lets just try not to throw any info their way that might make them suspicious. ” Cloud said as he opened the door, waving a hand to Raiden as he exited the room for luck.
The lobby of the inn was deserted, it seemed that even the over night desk woman was off doing something else. Cloud suspected that they didn't have many people through at five ten in the morning. Briskly walking, Cloud walked through the door meeting the darkness once again. It had grown much colder since Cloud and the others had returned to the inn a few hours before, but the sun would soon rise bringing with it warmth. Motioning to Tsuna Cloud set off for the Pub, where he expected a few miners would be hanging around before heading out.

“This'll be fun.” Raiden announced sarcastically, though he knew nobody was around to hear it. Casually reaching down he picked up his weapon, or rather what was left of it, and fastened it to his belt. While he didn't think it would be a very effective weapon in its current state, the materia sockets (and the materia inside) were both quite valuable in a fight. Raiden quietly left the room, heading down the stairs and making his way through the deserted lobby before exiting the building. First he would have to find out exactly where the two men were staying.

Doing his best to ignore the pain from his hangover, he began to walk through the town: hoping to find a store that was open, or someone on the streets. It would have been easier to just ask at the pub, which was still open, but he knew well enough that asking odd questions there would only create more loose ends. He only hoped he could find someone to ask where they might be at this time of day.

“If you believe so.” Tsuna follow right behind Cloud, already ready for the day ahead of him. Tsuna thought about how he would approach these miners and realized he knew nothing about them. His long stay as an experiment left him with minimul knowledge of the outside world, except ShinRa and basic geography. Knowing this conversation was best suited for outside, CM-3 waited till outside before posing his question, “I'm out of the loop to say the least, but I assume ShinRa owns at least part of the mine. Is it all or do other companies have bids in the land?” Tsuna kept his stride true as he walked unphased by his show of lack of intelligence, his cane patting the ground every other step. He knew he would have to play the part of official from a company and trusted Cloud enough to not worry about something so small. They had helped each other live and thats one of the strongest bonds that can be formed.

Chapter 3: Kalm Before the Storm

A brief gust of wind caused the jangle of chain from which the sign sporting a plain as day Shinra logo hung. It seemed the cards were falling into place, perhaps by dumb luck, or some sort of divine path they were all walking. The building from which the sign hung was two stories and matched the architecture of the town. No lights could be seen in any of the windows, and if anyone was inside they would surely be sleeping upstairs. The same gust of wind sent chills down Cloud's spine as he and Tsuna reached the pub, which seemed to be open twenty four hours.
” We don't need to know much, just some simply stuff like how long it would take to travel through the mines from Junon's side to ours. ” Cloud spoke to Tsuna as he stopped a few feet away from the pub door just to make sure they were on the same page. ” And if there is any truth to that rumor I always over hear people around here talking about, you know the one about the giant snakes. ” He finished before taking a few steps towards the door and entering the pub.
The inside of the pub remained warm but was far less active now. The table they had once sat at was empty and cleaned, ready for a new set of customers to take up a brief stay. Scanning the room quickly Cloud counted four people besides himself and Tsuna and one was clearly and employee of the pub. Singling out a burly man who was seated at the bar alone eating what appeared to be a large plate of eggs and bacon, Cloud motioned to Tsuna to follow his lead.
” Hello sir, can my friend and I borrow a minute of your time? ” Cloud spoke with an air of respect in his voice, making sure to make eye contact so the miner would recognize the mako blue eyes of a man who must be a SOLDIER.
” Yeah sure, what do ya need SOLDIER boy? ” The man spoke in a deep voice, turning his face towards Cloud an Tsuna revealing his strong jawline which was covered in a five o'clock shadow.
” We just want to ask a couple questions about the mine if you don't mind. ” Cloud said as he took a few steps towards the main, pulling the empty bar stool located next to the man and taking a seat calmly.

“Huh.” Raiden couldn't help but express his surprise; that they were actually advertising their base of operations was pitiful. 'Guess they've never heard of subtlety,' he mused while approaching the door, coming to a sudden stop in front of it. Hoping that they hadn't locked the door he tried to open it, but his luck didn't seem to carry him quite that far. Not that a simple lock was near enough to deter him from the objective. Grinning deviously he took a step away from the door, taking a moment to breathe deep before thrusting his foot at the door. It landed just to the side of the handle, the door giving way under the force of the blow. “Knock, knock.”

“Knock knock,” he muttered wickedly, stepping inside and unsheathing his broken shamshir. It was doubtful they wouldn't come to find out what the source of the noise was, and he still had a bit of hope he might be able to catch them unaware. If he could just assassinate one of them, he might even get the chance to interrogate the survivor before rendevousing with his comrades. To that end he glanced over the room, hoping to find a place he could ambush them from….

Tsuna smiled kindly and tipped his hat to the men, “Thank you, gentlemen, we greatly appreciate it.” Tsuna paused shortly to gather his words, “We wish to travel to Junon through the mines and wish to know how long it would take us to get through the mines and then to Junon.” Tsuna's voice was proper with perfect pronunciation and paused till he remembered what Cloud had said, “We have heard the mine were dangerous and would like to get through as quickly as possible.” Tsuna mad eye contact with the miners  the whole time. Not in an aggressive manner, but it one to show respect. He though to look at Cloud to see if his approach was correct, but did not want to give the miners any idea they were up to something.

Chapter 3: Kalm Before the Storm

Cloud sat calmly, allowing the more official looking Tsuna to speak his question to the burly miner, which was on point and would hopefully deliver the infomation the needed. As Tsuna finished speaking the miner turned from his plate, chewing a mouth full of eggs as he began to reply.
” You city boys are always asking 'bout traveling through the damn mines, why don't ya'll just build a damn road through the mountains already? We all know you have the means to do it. ” The miner said, specks of eggs flying out from his lips as he spoke. ” If ya'll must know, the actual trip from one end to the other takes 'bout twelve hours, but it takes 'bout an hour to get to the mines from here, and at least a day or two on chocobo to Junon. ” he finished looking at the clock which hung on the wall behind the bar. ” Sorry fellas, gotta be headin' out. Watch out for the Zolom! ” The burly man said which a chuckle as he lifted his massive body from the bar stool, and started towards the door.
” Interesting people here… ” Cloud spoke, mostly to himself but loud enough that Tsuna could hear. Making eye contact with his ally he nodded towards the door. ” That's really all we needed to know anyway, we need to buy some supplies and start towards those mines. ” Cloud finished as he followed the miner out the door, though a few moments behind.
Meanwhile, the building's interior was dark, little light from the street lamps poured in the now open and splintered door. The faint outline of a pair of desks could be made out, each very sparce, and seemingly organized. A small pillar of light cut through showing the way towards a back room and a set of stairs that lead upwards, the sound of stumbling footsteps could be heard on the boards that made up the celing, though it appeared to only be one set of feet.

Raiden heard the sound of footsteps, though from the sounds of it only one of them was upstairs. “Fuck,” he cursed under his breath. If only one of them was upstairs the other could be anywhere, which was sure to make this job a lot more difficult. 'Quickly and quietly, then.' he affirmed the original plan. It made very little difference in the end, he wouldn't dare let the other official escape his grim fate.

As one might expect from a Turk, Raiden was silent as death as he walked up the stairway, quietly unsheathing his shattered weapon. Upon reaching the top he searched for his target; if he was in sight, he planned to lunge straight at him and slash the man's throat open (the only viable physical attack he could perform with the state his weapon was in, after all)….

Tsuna tipped his top hat towards the miners as they left and followed Cloud's lead out of the bar. The encouter had gone well and they got the information they needed. The netx part was getting supplies. Tsuna had a few things in mind and with miners living here they were sure to sell the them somewhere nearby. CM-3 just wanted to know what Cloud had in mine so waited till they were outside of the bar, “A set of binoculars and ear pieces would be helpful for assessing their numbers from afar, hopefully Raiden can grab some. As for our procurements, we may need to set traps to limit their numbers. The two basic would be pickaxes and sledgehammers, which shouldn't be too hard with the miners living here. This may be a stretch, but some form of explosives would be astounding.” Tsuna spoke in hush tones as they walked so others would find it difficult to overhear them. “What are your thoughts?”

Chapter 3: Kalm Before the Storm

Cloud stood silent for a moment, listening, feeling the atmosphere around him, his senses told him something was amiss. Brushing it off for a moment he faced Tsuna while poing down the brick paved street to bridge like stricture with three arches and stairways leading up to a long tall building on top.
” That's the shop building over there, I recall being here once before when I was still with SOLDIER though I don't remember why or what I was doing, it's just this place I remember. ” Cloud said as he started towards the archways, knowing that under there he would find the smiths where the could perhaps acquire the things Tsuna had mentioned. I figure we'll need so rope and may want to purchase a few antidotes just for safety. I also want to look at their weapon and armor selection, I have a feeling we need to be well equipped for this. ” The blonde man finished as he neared the building.
The heat from the smiths furnaces could be felt once they neared the archways. Knowing the the stores above would likely be closed Cloud continued through the archways hoping a smith would allow them to browse what he had anyway. As Cloud entered he eyed a large strongly built man who was loading a stack of wood into a furnace.    ” Smith, is there any way you would allow use to browse your goods at this hour? We're planning on traveling to Junon through the mines at sunrise. ” Cloud said, hoping not to startle the man who had yet to see them come in.
” Huh? Well, I suppose so, what do you need? ” The smith replied waiting to show them what they required.
Meanwhile the tight quarters of the stairway were constricting and would not make a good place for a fight though light from a lamp seemed to illuminate the landing at the top. The footsteps could no longer be heard, seemingly stoping at the doorway which opened onto the landing. The outline of a man could be seen standing there, his features unrecognizable in the dark.    ” Who's that? Who's down there? ” A voice echoed down the stairs, one that Raiden would remember as that of the man named Woods.

'Aw, hell.' he immediately thought upon hearing Woods' voice. 'Don't really want to give you a slow death, buddy. For your sake, I hope your reflexes are worse than your hearing.' At that Raiden burst into motion, charging up the stairs like a madman. Once he'd cleared the steps he spotted his first target. Raiden didn't bother to hide his killing intent, even a fool would likely come to understand his intentions just from the look in his eyes. “This ain't personal,” he announced as he continued to sprint at his target; drawing his sword arm back slightly and slashing in an arc aimed to slice the man's throat open. “but you need to die.”

The trip to the smith wasn't very far and at least ShinRa helped them through Cloud knowing the town's general layout. Tsuna eyed the smiths goods, taking in what he had to offer. It was pretty good work for a small village like this. “We're looking for a pickaxe and sledgehammer.” Tsuna voice had a hard edge to it. It wasn't meant to intimidate simply that he wanted to buy the man's good and move on. If the man had a problem with that, then, Tsuna thought, he better find a new profession.

Chapter 3: Kalm Before the Storm

Woods stumbled backwards falling through the doorway which allowed the lamp light from the Shinra officers sleeping quarters to fully illuminated the dark passage that was the stairway and landing. With a loud crash Woods fell into his personal desk sending various items flying about in the course of the fall including a small slip of paper which slid to a halt next to Raiden's shoe as he planted.
” Ohh.. what is this?  ” Woods managed to say with a groan as he lay in the wreakage of his desk seemingly still groggy from having just woke. ” You, you're the guy from the pub. What the hell? ” He continued as he lay prone on on the floor.
Meanwhile the warmth of the blacksmith fires comforted Cloud as he browsed a selection of weapons, choosing a fine saber crafted from local mythril as well as bag of antidotes. Feeling that it was time for them to move on Coud paid the smith for his, Raiden's, and Tsuna's goods and exited back into the streets of Kalm. Looking to the east the pre-dawn glow had begun to fill the sky, they would need to leave soon.
” We need to find Raiden as see what he's found out and hopefully rent some chocobos to head to the mines. ” Cloud said as he started back towards the Inn, hoping that Raiden would be waiting for them when they arrived.
