  Survival of the Fittest

Oak Ave. was littered with trash and scrap, a few abandoned cars, and an over turned shopping cart. Robert turned behind him, catching sight of his neighbor and the two teens that acompanied him, then up at sun which was low in the western sky at their backs. Turning back he moved his hand to where he could see his watch, it was five fourty seven, it would be dark in less than an hour. A cool breeze blew down the empty street, rustling the fallen leaves and trash about.
” You guys know the drill, we stick together and go one house at a time, if we get split up everyone abandons what they must and heads directly back to the safe house. ” Robert said, his eyes locked on the teens, as it was clearly instructions for them. ” Hopefully we won't encounter any of those things tonight, but lets gather all the supplies we can carry. ” Robert finished taking a moment to look around once more before setting his sights on the closest house, a single level on the corner. The house was in moderately good shape, though they wouldn't know for sure if it had been looted already until they got inside. Moving up the lawn Robert reached to door and waited for the others to gather around before opening the doorway into the unknown.

Abe followed close behind Robert as they approached the house. Since the zombies had taken over, Abe had become a stronger person, but he would probably always be that kid that was bullied unless he gave the bully a reason no to and zombies didn't see much reason. The teenager glanced a look at his older sister. Abe always looked up to her, but he would never tell her that, she was his sister after all. With a quick glance up at the sun, his stomache seemed to do somersaults. With the sun setting, came the growing possibility of an unfriendly enounter. Sweat dripped from the teenagers hand as he gripped his screwdriver tighter and tighter and his throat clenched at the thought of saying something. Knowing he'd be called upon if a lock needed to be picked, Abe moved to the side of the door, giving the older member's full access when they finally got inside.

Chris held onto the strap of his backpack with his left hand, the right lodged firmly in his pocket; some feet behind Robert, the man kept a keen eye upon their surroundings while Robert spoke to the group (though, it wasn't anything the man didn't already know).  If they were separated they had to return to the safe house immediately, a fairly good idea all things considered. Chris followed to the house without a second thought, moving with the group towards the house. He hoped they found something worth their while this time; the dinky little pocket knife he'd been using as a weapon wasn't exactly top of the line when it push came to shove.

Chris couldn't help but notice the tension coming from Abe, and let out a deep sigh before calling out to the boy. “Abe, relax. If you're tense like that you'll end up freak out over nothing, and that will get their attention.” He warned in a low voice; it wasn't a comforting thought, he knew, but there was little comfort to be had when out in the open like this.

Jade hugged her arms across the front of her body, both hands rubbing the length of each tricep. The sun was only just setting and it was already getting cold. Her sweater had got ruined in a previous struggle and she was now down to just a vest. She followed Robert, seeing him as a guardian to her brother and herself. He often spoke to her like she was a child; somebody who could not handle themselves, but she always dismissed it as harmless. If he only knew what she had been through to survive.

The house they came to looked familiar. Oak Avenue used to be bustling with life; children playing in the streets; families having BBQs and picnics on their lawns; garage sales and parties… It was a completely different world now. Jade still hadn't managed to absorb the situation, she was just taking it one day at a time. She looked to her brother, a smile subconsciously forcing its way across her mouth. At least she still had Abe.

Following Abe and Robert onto the front lawn, she stopped and looked up at the house. There had to be something useful inside. Her tan canvas backpack had the bare essentials but they would soon run out. Looking to Chris as he made his remark, she laughed some, and then headed up onto the patio.

Now sure that everyone was prepared Robert reached out, grasping the bronze door knob. Twisting it he found resistance, the door was locked. Turning to the others he shrugged jokingly before moving on to plan b, which was risky if anyone or thing was in the house, but with a door and walls between them Robert was confident that it was worth taking a chance on.
” I'm going to break this window and unlatch the door, be on the lookout. ” Robert said calmly as he sat his backpack down, reaching both arms down around his waste so that he could pull the sweat shirt he was wearing off over his head. Wrapping the shirt around his elbow he gave everyone the signal that he was about to act and then with a low crack he elbowed the window part of the door. The glass crashed down inside, looking Robert waited for movement and once satisfied that everything was alright reached inside and unlatched the door.
” Everyone on their toes. ” Robert said as he stuffed his sweat shirt into his backpack and then threw it over his shoulders, his right hand firmly gripped on his monkey wrench while his left twisted the knob and pushed the door inwards.
The inside of the home opened into a large living room and kitchen/dining area combined. The living room seemed mostly normal, the couch and love seat were clean and seemed unmoved. Clutter and clothes were strung about the room around the coffee table and television, Robert guessed whoever lived here had left in a hurry and never returned. Looking around Robert noticed a hallway with several closed doors but everything seemed calm. ” Ok lets search the rooms, bring anything of use to that table in the dining room. ” Robert said as he started towards the kitchen.

OOC Talk:
How this will work is, you will RP entering whichever room or looking about any of the big rooms and I will then post out of order with detailed
descriptions based on a spot/search roll. You can make your own rolls or I'll make them for you whatever works best.

Abe nodded at the advice of Chris and his gripped loosened, until the crash of the window rang through his ears. The boy jumped, scowled for a brief moment, but made no outward noise. The joy of picking a lock brought simple logic to the boy's mind and he could use that in this god forsaken world. Casting a glance across the firts room as he answered, Abe figured the clothes could be looked through later. The group had clothes what they needed was food and any other supplies they could find.

The feeling of a house that was vacated as quickly as possible always struck Abe as eerie, no matter how many times he saw it. His footsteps were deliberate and somewhat slow to make sure he didn't make any creaking noises, well as best he could. Most houses had some weak points that cause creaking and avoiding them was important so no one heard them moving through the house, unless they already heard the window breaking. Eventually, Abe reached the first door on the right down the right hallway. His right hand moved to the door knob while his left hand reached for the side compartment on his backpacking holding his paperclips in case the door was locked. The chance of that was unlikely, but Abe always liked to hope, he was still alive after all.

The door opened outward revealing a small dark closet. Light streaming in from the kitchen partially illuminated the contents, revealing a golf bag housing ten or more clubs as well as a pair of golf cleats resting in a bag hanging around one of the clubs. To the right of the set of clubs a large vacuum cleaning was partial visible under a row of hanging coats, one a large rain poncho. A few varios boxes sat on the top shelf of the closet.

OOC Talk:
Rolled a spot check for you Griff, you got 17+2(19) so there's really no need to deep search it, lol. There are some warm coats in there if
you want one.

Chris kept an eye out for anything suspicious while Robert worked to open the front door. It wasn't a very sharp idea to make loud noises, especially when the hour began to grow late, but he knew that they didn't have time to find a conveniently unlocked door. When the door was open he followed just behind Robert into the house. It was in surprisingly good state, and Chris could only hope they'd hit the jackpot this time. “I'll get one of the rooms at the end of the hall,” he announced, walking into the poorly-lit hallway warily; there was no telling what might lurk in one of the rooms or around a corner. Chris came to a stop in front of the next door down, left hand still holding tightly onto his backpack strap as his right gripped the doorknob. Chris attempted to push the doorway open, preparing himself for any surprises that might await on the other side, just in case…

Jade followed the others into the house, turning her head over her shoulder to check nothing was behind them. Once inside, she let the others make a choice as to where to search. Abe headed to the right so she went in the same direction, hoping to keep an eye on him without making him feel like she was being too protective. “I'll just check in here.” She whispered to her little brother, pointing to a door opposite. Gently turning the handle, she pushed the door open and went inside. A bedroom. The bed was perfectly made and the whole room looked completely untouched. Incredibly inviting, Jade found the temptation to snuggle up under the duvet all too difficult to fight, but she knew she would be unable to do that right now. A dresser lay under the window, the last beams of the days light shining onto it through the netted curtain. She went over and searched through the drawers.

  Survival of the Fittest

Jade's Room: The door opened revealing the large master bedroom, unkept and seemingly left in a state of hurried evacuation. On the east wall the large queen sized bed was unmade, clothes thrown about it in mounds as if the previous occupants of the home had cleared out the closet and torn through them in a rush. On each side of the bed a one drawer night stand stood, each with a lamp among other common items. Along the north wall a nice vanity, topped with many makeup products and jewelry boxes. Along the western wall a long dresser, about wasit high with six total drawers covered the wall, each side housing three drawers. Atop the dresser was a small television with a large gray cable box plopped on top. The south wall was home to a large closest, the contents strewn about the floor around it, boxes overturned and shoes everywhere.

Christian's Room: The door which Christian stood at opened into a average sized kids bedroom. A bunk bed dominated the western wall of the room, complete with ladder and a set of drawers located under the bottom bunk. A long dresser filled much of the south wall, made of the same wood as the bunk bed, clearly part of a set. Much of the rest of the room was characterized by a mess of toys, pilled high in colorful boxes, while others we just thrown about. If a intuative guess were to be made, the child who once called this room hope couldn't be older than ten.

OOC Talk:
A note for Clerith, I have all the rooms planned out so when entering one stop and allow me to describe the room (I'll post out of my character order
to do so as DM) You could have very easily described the bathroom as a bedroom lol.

  Survival of the Fittest

The dim twilight poured into the kitchen through the windows and the large sliding back door. The counter tops were nice, Robert thought, granite, the good stuff. Knocking his knuckles against them Robert started for the cabinets over the counter and sink, pulling them open one by one before taking in what the contained.
” Jackpot. ” Robert mumbled to himself as he began to count the cans and boxes of food that had been left behind, which totaled out to be nine. ” Beans, beans, pears, dried oatmeal, not bad if this is all we find tonight at least we'll have a meal or two out of it. ” Robert continued to talk to himself as he caught a few mumbled words from his allies down the hall. Turning his attention to the drawers and lower cabinets Robert moved along uncovering a few knives, of decent quaility, and a carrier full of cleaning supplies which he would have to look at more closely. Carring his haul to the table and placing it Robert decided to head back to the living room and rummage about as his friends explored the rest of the house.

OOC Talk:
Table contents so far: 7 cans + 2 boxes food, 3 kitchen knives, 4 bottles of cleaning supplies, a pair of rubber gloves, and box of scrubbies.
Moving to W-19.

Abe nodded and waved his sister off. They couldn't be out of eyesight without him having to know where she was going. He understood it made sense and he loved her for it, but he still didn't like it, even if it was the apocalypse. None of the other guys needed to know where she was going, even if they were older. Abe considered himself far older than he was. Then again most youths did.

Abe moved through the closet, and thoughts of his sister hit him as he looked at the warm jackets. He sized up one he hoped would fit his sister then grabbed one for himself, if the adults needed one they could find that fit themselves. The teenager walked back into the hallway and towards the room his sister had picked out. Abe tossed the jacket onto the bed inside, “Hope it fits.” The boy spoke in a low tone and was out as quickly as he came. Even though he cared, he sure as hell wasn't going to show her.

After another trip into the closet, Abe came out with three golf clubs, as that was all he felt comfortable carrying at once, held on for dear life inbetween both of his arms. The boy left the three clubs on the table with the items Robert had found. Without even pausing to see what else was left, Abe moved close to Robert, “There's jackets in the closet if you feel you need one.” Waiting for a respond would take away precious time, so the boy was back on the move, stopping at the kid's room where Christian was and repeated what he had just said to Robert. Again not waiting for a response, Abe moved to the end of the hallway and picked another room to investigate.

OOC: Added three golf club. P-31. North door opened.

Abe's Room: The door swung inwards revealing a third bedroom, this the smallest of the three. The walls of the room, somewhat illuminated from the setting sun, were painted light blue with white fluffy clouds, a child's room. Inside aginst the far north wall a waist high dresser and changing table built from a dark hard wood and were uncluttered. To the left of the door a tall crib, filled with stuffed animals and other toys was abandoned. Next to the crib a rocking chair was left draped in blankets. The floor was littered with bottles and scattered dipers, as if left in a burry.

'Just a kid's bedroom, huh?' Christian thought, his disappointment showing in his expression clear as day. Chris took a step back from the door, catching sight of Abe out of the corner of his eye as the young man returned from the kitchen. When the teen let him know that the closet down the hall contained coats he could only shrug; he was grateful for the heads up, but his own coat had served him well for several years. It wasn't going to be so easy to replace. “Only a little kid's room here,” Christian said to Abe as he passed, taking a few steps to his left in order to reach the next room over. “might as well keep looking.” At that the former soldier took hold of the door knob with his right hand, twisting it open with the hope that this room would prove more worthwhile than the last.

Jade slowly nudged the door open, peering her head through the gap to check if it was clear before stepping inside. She left the door wide open behind her. Scattered all over the large bedroom were clothes and broken ornaments; an unfortunately familiar site as of late. Some jumpers and cardigans looked to be feminine and around about her size but she could never put them on. Since the outbreak, she had only worn her own clothes. The idea of taking clothes that used to be worn by somebody who had now turned into a monster did not settle well with her at all. She rubbed her arms, a chill in the air, but still refused to adorn any of these second-hand garments.
Suddenly, Abe entered, throwing a coat onto the bed. She looked at him in slight disbelief, shaking her head.
“You know I'm not going to wear that, Abe.” He quickly left. It was tempting, staring at the warm-looking jacket on the bed, but she shrugged it off and changed her focus. The only thing of any interest in the room was the large chest of drawers. She headed over and began to search through, starting from the top and working her way down to the bottom, before eventually searching underneath.

Christian's Room: The bathroom door swung open revealing the dimly lit, well tiled lavatory. The room was big, housing a full counter with a double sink and two mirrors, which housed a few cabinets underneith. The tub was a large, spa style, and took up much of the southern wall. To the west the toilet and a tall set of drawers, which would most likely hold linen.

The Master Bedroom: The set of drawers at first only revealed under garments and socks, but soon a drawer of odds and ends which included a pack of six D batteries, a pair of scissors, and a roll of duct tape, among other less useful family mementos.

OOC Talk:
Perhaps there are other useful areas to search in the master? Also when we're not in a combat situation feel free to RP sweeping the entire room
if you like, we don't have to follow the strict action rules when we're not in a combat situation.

Robert moved calmly through the living room, knowing exactly what it was that he was looking for. Sliding past the couch he started to gaze over the coffee table, moving his hand down to push and slide away a stack of books and a few cassette tapes.
” Hmm, where are they? ” He asked himself before turning his attention to the end tables, leaning over to get a closer look in the dim light, but still having no luck. ” The TV. ” He thought aloud before maneuvering around the coffee table towards the large television sitting on a nice hard wood table with one drawer. Reaching out he grasped the cool metal knob and pulled the drawer out revealing two remove controls. Robert picked them up, fliping them over and removing the batteries which he promptly stuck in his pants pocket, knowing that you could never have to many.
” There's not much of anything in here, make sure you check the medicine cabinets we should probably stock up on any fever reducers or antibotics we can find, it's starting to get colder and if one of us gets sick we need to be able to deal with that. Robert said as he made his way down the hall towards the bathroom, stopping at the kids room to take a quick peek.

Jade put the batteries, scissors and duct tape into her bag and then headed over to the bed. She looked inside each side table in turn before heading for the vanity table. She hesitated for a moment, thinking about the woman who would have sat in front of this every day. The mirror caught her eye and her reflection was grim; a shower would be perfect right now. She picked up the stool that had been knocked to the ground and sat at the table before pulling open the drawers and searching through.

Abe sighed as he opened the door to the baby's room. The teen could think of nothing of use in a baby's room, so with a quick glance and a sigh Abe moved to the closet to his left. The teen reached for the door to what seemed to be another closet thinking of possible things that could be in a baby's room, not wanting to waste time checking a room when time was of the essence.

The Master Bedroom: The end tables revealed little of use though a small remote control to the tv was found in one of the drawers, giving up two more AA batteries. The vanity was left almost pristine, the multiple bottles of perfume and jewelry boxes organized and well kept as if in the hurry to escape these things that once held much importance no longer had any.

The Baby's Room: The closet of the baby's room seemed to be more of a communial junk closet where anything that was not normally needed might be stashed. The floor was stacked high with boxes, some labeled 'X-mas' others 'memories'. All together nothing of any real use could be found in the closet.
