Cedar Park Shopping Mall
Like all major and even some minor American cities, the late 1970s began the building boom for shopping malls, and Ulysses was no exception. Cedar Park Shopping Mall was built in 1981 and sports a two story open design with a food court in the middle and several large outlet stores joined in. The mall itself sports fairly modern design, vaulted glass ceilings, beautifully tiled floors, several indoor fountains, and everything else you would expect to adorn a mall of this type. The layout follows an X pattern, meeting in the center food court and each X home to one outlet store at the end. The mall is also home to over sixty smaller shops and locations, some chains, others locally owned and managed, including but not limited to a a toy store, a movie theater, a bank, a bookstore, and several clothing and shoe stores.

Downtown Ulysses
Downtown Ulysses Oregon is located on the southern bank of the Alexander River, nestled in tightly between Old Ulysses to the east and the industrial West Ulysses to, the west. Downtown Ulysses as it is now, was early on the residential district of the city, prior to the large building boom of the 1950s onward, which quickly spread into this region of the town, though some construction had started earlier, most prominently the Oregonian hotel which was completed in 1937 just on the eastern edge of downtown. Over the past 35 years Downtown Ulysses has grown at an unusually high rate, with many buildings going up in the same years to form the commercial and residential center that it is now. Packed with stores, nightlife, as well as city and state government offices it has become a growing center of activity in the American North West and appears that it will be for some time to come.

Eastlake
Hugging the northern bank of the Alexander River, the community of Eastlake was originally one of the first expansions of territory for Ulysses. Originally planned as a housing community for the families starting after the end of World War II, Eastlake expanded quickly, but soon fell out of favor due to it’s proximity to the new downtown center located across the river. In the years since the building boom of the late 50s and 60s Eastlake has fallen on hard times, overshadowed by the exponential growth of Downtown Ulysses due south, and of Loyal Heights and other suburbs near the city center to the north. Though financially the area has fallen on hard times it is still one of the most densely populated areas of the city, and while not as strong of a commercial center as Downtown of neighboring Cedar Park it does still hold several commercial areas, most notably the popular Eastlake Strip Mall which is home to several popular outlets and stores.

Ft. Adair Military Base
Located on the north side of the Alexander River, just east of the central city and suburbs, Ft. Adair Military Base was founded in 1943 as an air force establishment, where planes could quickly be brought into action if there was ever a Japanese attack on the American North West. In 1952 the base was converted in to an Army Facility and remains so today. Though it’s a relatively small base in size, and much of what was originally air field has now been claimed and built on, Ft. Adair does have a large presence in the Ulysses community. It’s close proximity to the nearby Ulysses dockyards make for great side employment for stationed soldiers who very regularly work part time at the docks for extra money. Ft. Adair has also in recent years become more involved in army research, starting in 1976 when the Byrnes Research Facility was opened on base, and continuing to this day, though exact knowledge on what the facility is being used for is unknown and has sense become public rumor for a decade now.

Old Ulysses
Located due east of the current city center, Old Ulysses as it is called now was once the original center of town and served as so until the building boom started in the 1950s. Old Ulysses is very characteristic of other similar districts in other growing or large metropolitan areas, much of the architecture from the 1920s and 30s, the buildings no longer being used as the originally were designed to, but most still in use. Old Ulysses is also home to Ulysses own community college which was founded in 1932 and has occupied the same spot since it was founded, though it has expanded some, the school purchasing nearly buildings and lots and converting them into school buildings or grounds. All in all Old Ulysses is becoming a favorite part of town for young people and is expected to become a popular community for living, as many of the old buildings are being converted into loft apartments and other types of dwellings.

Ulysses General Hospital
Ulysses General Hospital takes up a rather large chunk of land between Downtown Ulysses and Old Ulysses, and is the main medical treatment facility in the region. Covering several tens of thousands of square feet, the main building is home to most of the hospitals main facilities. The ground floor is mostly taken up by the emergency room which is often chaotic, surgical facilities, and visitor facilities like the gift shop and cafeteria. Ulysses General Hospital also sports two floors of basements, with certain facilities located here, the morgue for example, but is mainly home to file storage and even a few offices for those working in file and hospital storage, or the janitors. Much of the four stories above the main floor are filled with patient rooms, some offices, and other medical facilities. The hospital itself is in good repair, it’s rooms having recently renovated to make for a more enjoyable stay as well as renovating many testing facilities so as to accommodate more modern technology to expand hospital coverage.

West Ulysses
Industry is a big part of what makes a city grow, where there is industry there is usually also a growing city. Ulysses has always been a hard working town, with several major industries propelling it’s growth into the city that it is today, and most of those industries call West Ulysses home. Apart from being home to many factories and warehouses which help supply the entire region with important consumer goods, Ulysses also sports a rather large shipping dock due to their proximity to the mouth of the Alexander River, which is just 44 miles west. The docks are busy 24 hours a day, shipping goods made in Ulysses many factories out and unloading goods to fill the consumer warehouses. West Ulysses is also home to many bars and other places hard working men like to spend their free time, making it known as a tough part of town.

Loyal Heights
Loyal Heights is typical of any modern middle class neighborhood. Located on the north side of the Alexander River, outside of the most congested parts of Ulysses, Loyal Heights is characterized by broad streets, big yards, and modern housing. Confirmed as one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in Ulysses, Loyal Heights is home to everything a family could need, from recently constructed Everett Elementary School to the beautiful walking trails of Meadowbrook Park. Safety is also key in Loyal Heights, which has it’s very own police station and fire depot among the other common establishments you would expect to see in a neighborhood as in demand is Loyal Heights.
