Chapter VI: Belly of the Whale

As the noise from the elevator shaft continued to grow in pitch, Levy could only shake his head in frustration. If that were enough to kill Genesis it would come as something of a relief, but there wasn't a doubt in his mind that the ex-SOLDIER had somehow managed to survive. When finally Cloud spoke up Levy's thoughts turned back to reality, only for a sharp scream to interrupt the blonde mid-sentence. There was no doubt that it was the female scientist from before, which only made Levy stare daggers at Tsuna momentarily before he burst into motion, a single stride behind Cloud. It was their fault she was in this predicament, and it was their responsibility to see her safely out of it.

The sound of the elevator went one ear and out the other to Tsuna. He knew they were in trouble seeing it as worse now wouldn't make anything better, but the scream pierced his brain. His mouth formed a snarl, his fangs baring, and the look from Leveche confirmed that he thought the same thing. “How wonderful that someone survived all this chaos.” Tsuna began running with a small chuckle to himself, he only hoped it was her.

Chapter VI: Belly of the Whale

The growing thud of Cloud's heartbeat hung in the running man's ears—he had flung himself into the darkness, the flickering of overhead fluorescent lights strobing through the passageway. His footsteps splashed in the growing stream of water at his feet, he was soaked through and could feel the cold clinging at his bones, attempting to distract him, seeping at his focus. He shook the thoughts from his head, focusing on the corridor's twists and turns, trusting his instincts to guide him to the scientist, naive in her ways, but still not deserving of the fate that could befall them all.
” Hellllp! ” A call echoed through the corridor. Cloud's head shot to the left, he turned unsure if the others were still behind him. The lights flickered on and off. Cloud blinked and slowed as he saw a silhouette of movement ahead. They flickered again and he saw more. The hair on the back of his neck stood on end, a rippling tingle of electricity shooting through his arms and legs. The lights flickered again and reflected in Genesis's gleaming eyes which met Cloud's for the briefest instant before darkness engulfed them once more. Ahead of him, on her knees had been the young scientist, Cloud was unsure if she was alive or dead. Fear inundated him, there was nowhere to go.

Leveche was only a stride or two behind Cloud as they charged forward, the flourescent lights strobing the flooded passageway at random. Every time they flickered out he was left totally blind, and when they came to life the sudden light stung his eyes. As if that wasn't enough the water kicked up with every step only served to remind him of the overbearing chill of his soaked outfit.
A cry echoed down the corridor, from the left, and Levy broke in that direction the moment he heard it. Even after the scream had faded away it continued to echo in his ears, driving him to the limit. When the lights strobed on again they caught sight of Genesis, who stood over the scientist. Just as quickly as they had come on, the lights faded away to leave them in total darkness.
Darkness wasn't enough to deter Leveche, however, as the sight of Genesis once more brought forth a surge of emotion. In that moment everything that made him a SOLDIER failed him as he completely lost control to his fury. Blindly he charged forward, not sure what he planned to do, save that he had to do something–anything.

Tsuna hopes were high and his teeth grinding slightly against each other with anticipation. That was until the light began to flicker on an off. When the lights turned off, he saw darkness only for moments till his eyes adjusted and could see the sillouhettes down to corridor they turned down. When the lights turned on, he was blinded causing a short headache till his eyes adjusted. In all that choas one things was certain, here was Genesis. This was where generosity and vegence screwed people over. The lights bothered Tsuna greatly and the thought of just destroying them crossed his mind, but this would probably help Genesis more.

Tsuna saw the shock on Cloud's face and grabbed him by his shoulder trying to shake him out of it. The cold began to penetrate him feet slightly and seeing the height of the water he had an idea. Tsuna whispered low to Cloud as to not be heard by Genesis.
“Grab her and stay back and don't forget he may have changed her.” Tsuna knew Cloud would react to saving someone, but he did it because he hadn't decided what to do with her yet. With Cloud situated, he had to get Leveche in plan, but that was going to be hard without Genesis growing suspicious. Tsuna ran after Leveche aiming to strike right after him at Genesis and wait for an opening.

Chapter VI: Belly of the Whale

Cloud was frozen, his body unwilling to go forward, fear grasping his legs and holding tight. He felt Leveche pass him, his eyes never moving, looking straight ahead in the darkness waiting for the light to return. He felt a hand on his shoulder, it pulled at him but he stood firm, where could they run to now? His lip quivered, as if trying to form words but found none that truly captured his state. In a flash the lights returned, he winced in pain and fear expecting poor Paris to being lying in a pool of the rushing current which would carry her life away and keep it trapped at the bottom of the ocean, a prisoner for all time; what he saw was more shocking. Ahead of Leveche, between he and Genesis, a wisp of silver and black stepped from a intersecting passage. As if in slow motion it turned to them, looking past Leveche towards Tsuna and Cloud.
” Find our mother. ” The words rolled off of Sephiroth's lips as his eyes met with Cloud's. His eyes drifted back past Leveche, stopping for a moment on his former comrade before the lights thrust them into darkness again

Chapter VI: Belly of the Whale

Once the lights came back to life a figure of silver and black came into view. Even though his eyes were still adjusting to the light, and the details of everything were blurry he knew exactly who it was. “Sephiroth…!” Leveche whispered as his voice was stolen by a sudden, overwhelming sense of dread. Without a second's thought he came to a full stop, and nearly fell over in the process. Despite the crushing fear that had come over him he brought his weapon to bear, though he wasn't sure what good it would do against the two titans that loomed before them. Slowly he started to back away, moving closer to his allies. Yet all the same his stare was still fixated upon Genesis and his captive, a clear show that he hadn't given up on her just yet.

A tingle of fear shot down Tsuna's spine. A sensation he hadn't felt since the beginning of his “trainings” and one similar to that he felt from Genesis. The named seemed to hit somewhere deep in his mind, a memory he couldn't quite remember, but this was certainly trouble. His fangs went bare on instinct, but it seemed this beast was on their side and seemed to know Cloud well.

The two seemed stunned, hesistation sinking in. After a few moments, Tsuna knew they had to move and quick. The scientist was still of us, so using the distration he ran forward and grab onto her, hooking his arm over his back and carrying her back towards the group,
“We can figure out what happened later. Knowledge won't help us breath when this place goes under.” In all the chaos, the thought that this place was sinking seemed to go to back of the issues, somehow. These two were definitely trouble to distract from definite death. Running as fast as he could, while carrying the scienties, Tsuna ran towards the exit hoping the others were following.

Chapter VI: Belly of the Whale

Cloud continued to stand motionless as the overhead lights flickered on in off, illuminating or casting them into darkness every few seconds. Ahead of him his eyes continued to fix on Sephiroth and Genesis, a sense of fear and duty paralyzing him. He seemed unaware of Tsuna as he moved around him, grasping the body of Paris the scientist from the flooding passage and quickly darting down the intersecting corridor from which Sephiroth had emerged just moments before. His mind was on fire, racing even though his body was frozen. He saw images of his past, some not so distant. He heard Zack's voice whispering Sephiroth's name, knowing that his friend must have stood firm against Sephiroth's plans and because of such backbone was slaughtered. Cloud shivered.
” No. ” The declaration pried itself from Cloud's mouth, echoing through the chamber. ” Zack didn't back down, and neither will I. ” The words seemed to speak themselves, Cloud still standing statuesque, the water rushing up to his knees and growing in force.

Chapter VI: Belly of the Whale

Under the crushing weight of his fear Levy could only stand there transfixed. In that moment everything that he had been taught, everything that made him a SOLDIER escaped him. Genesis was one thing, but Sephiroth alone was so far beyond his ken it was almost maddening. If there were any solace to be found, it was that the pair didn't seem to be in league with one another. Yet in that moment he heard Cloud cry out, to hold fast despite the odds. 'Show them the pride of SOLDIER!' Words that Zack had spoken long ago echoed in his mind, and from them Levy found the courage to face his fear.
Levy lifted his greatsword into the air with ease, using only his dominant hand, and spun it overhead in a deadly flourish. In the narrow corridor the length of the blade was nearly long enough to touch the wall on either side. “I won't be able to meet Zack's gaze when I find him,” After that overhead spin Levy brandished the greatsword, still holding the massive blade with a single hand, while assuming a ready stance. “if I don't stay true to the honor and pride of a SOLDIER!”

Chapter VI: Belly of the Whale

Tsuna moved like a wave past Cloud and Leveche, pulling in tow Paris, the young laboratory assistant. The water slushed around them, now nearly waist high, it was clear that the structure couldn't possibly hold up much longer. Cloud looked through Sephiroth to Genesis, he could feel the connection he had to these men, he pain of Zack's loss was all to close.
” Z… Zack! ”Cloud exclaimed, his focus torn from the typhoon raging ahead to Leveche, drawn by one single name. He reached out, grasping his ally by the arm. ” You knew him?! ” Cloud found himself asking, seemingly having lost control of his own body and mind, a deeper consciousness taking over. ” We have to leave, he would want us to survive to fight another day. ” Cloud's lips independently formed the words as he pulled on Leveche's arm just as a great tremor rocked the facility. Cloud could feel the pipes above his head bursting, he let his body take control and fleed following in Tsuna's wake.

Chapter VI: Belly of the Whale

Levy stood there, greatsword at the ready, his hands trembling ever so slightly upon the grip. It was impossible to tell if it was from fear, anger, or just a result of ice cold water that soaked him to the bone. Yet that wasn't enough to deter him, nor was the fact that the structure they were in clearly wouldn't hold out much longer. The pride of a SOLDIER would have him charge forward, to bring low the men he had once idolized. All thoughts of that escaped him when Cloud called out Zack's name. At the query the blonde posed Levy stared for a moment, before starting to make an annoyed declaration.
“Of course I know…!” Levy paused at that. It struck him then that Cloud had used the past tense, and the very thought as to the implication left his stomach in a tight knot. Somehow he managed to force the thought away though, reasoning that there was no way anything had happened to Zack–to let the worst of his fears overtake him hear would only lead him to an early, watery grave. A moment later Cloud left, following after Tsuna. Levy glanced back toward Sephiroth and Genesis for a moment, before he turned and followed suit after the others.

Plodding his way through the water, Tsuna nodded to himself when he heard the distinct noise of two others following him in the water. Tsuna didn't feel the need to confirm it was Levy and Cloud and not Genesis and Sephiroth because if it was the latter, looking back would only slow him down. Tightening his grip on the scientists, Tsuna searched for any signs of life or any other movement should Genesis had changed her. “Glad you two snapped out of it.” Tsuna grinned to himself as he continued on towards the exit.

Chapter VI: Belly of the Whale

Cloud moved through the passageway as quickly as he could, fighting the weight of the water that pushed against him. Ahead he could see the silhouetted movements of Tsuna and Paris, the deep red emergency lights illuminated them and the corridor that the four trudged though. In the distance, through the haze of mist that spewed from the pipes overhead Cloud made out a directional sign, it read “docking bay”. He felt a sigh of relief feeling that escape from the underwater labyrinth would soon be within reach.
” Yeah. ”Was the only response Cloud could muster to Tsuna as they entered the docking bay, he didn't have time or the capacity to express how the past few moments had impacted him and from the appearance of Leveche, he felt the same.” Paris how do we get out of here? ”Cloud found himself asking as he did his best to examine the large chamber through the dim red light.
The docking bay was large, it's domed ceiling much higher then the corridors which the had been traversing. Partly submerged structures and work stations dotted the foreground, though their exact use was unapparent due to the circumstances. Twenty meters back he noticed the protruding spear of what was unmistakably a submarine and without waiting for a reply from the scientist waded forward towards it.

Chapter VI: Belly of the Whale

It was slow progress trudge onward beneath the crushing weight of the ocean flooding the facility. Every step took its toll upon Levy, frozen to the core as he was, but he failed to pay it any heed. The principles that made him a SOLDIER, that made him who he was, consumed his every thought in the demand that he return to exact justice upon two men he had once idolized. Leveche fought that reckless ideology more than the bitter cold, well aware that there was only one way things would end if he turned back. Painfully he bit into his lower lip and cursed his weakness, pressing forward through the bitter cold.
By the time the others had reached the docking bay Levy had managed to catch up with them. Dim red lights flooded the large, domed chamber. It was partially flooded as well, with most of the room's equipment obscured beneath the icy water. What appeared to be a submarine sat nearby, which Cloud seemed to have noticed first. With a heavy heart he set out after the blonde, a few steps behind him. “When we're out of this mess, you and I need to talk….” Levy muttered to Cloud half-heartedly, still struggling with his own inner turmoil.

The water continued to raise. The situation was getting worse, but in the back of Tsuna's mind all he could think about was how his suit was ruined and where would he find someone to replace such an exquisite suit. Cloud question to Paris snapped him back. Tsuna could not see any signs of life from the assistant, but in all the turmoil smaller signs would be easily lost. Over hearing Levy, Tsuna wondered what happened between those two, but it could be sorted out later. “Anyone know how to pilot that?” The submarine was a blessing, but how many times would someone need to pilot one? Tsuna only hoped the SOLDIERS were trained in all vehicles.

Chapter VI: Belly of the Whale

Cloud could feel Leveche's wake as he moved past, a wake that seemed to be created by his words, by what they signified. Cloud could only nod a response, briefly turning towards Tsuna and Paris before he fell in line behind the SOLDIER en route to the Shinra submarine.
” Whether we can pilot it or not, at least it will buy us some time. ” Cloud replied to Tsuna as he neared the sub.
Suddenly Cloud flailed in the water, feeling the floor literally disappear from under his feet. He could feel the weight of his equipment and the sense of panic overtaking him as he reached out, finding the submarine's railing and latching on with all his strength. It only dawned on him then that the floor to this room was open to the sea, the positive pressure of the facility allowing for the sub to dock from underneath. Cloud gasped for breath, his heart rate slowly returning to normal as he pulled himself up over the railing onto the sub itself, his eyes searching the darkness for the others.

Chapter VI: Belly of the Whale

Leveche lead the way to the submarine, trudging forward desperately against the ocean's bitter chill. With every step his thoughts raced back to the encounter between Sephiroth, to the words Cloud had spoken. With every step he purged those thoughts from his mind and refocused upon the present. As they came upon the submarine he put one foot out and felt the floor fade away. Reflex took control of his actions as Leveche reached out and took hold of the ladder, pulling himself up before he slipped into the water.
Once he reached the peak of the ladder, Leveche pulled himself over the railing and onto the top of the submarine. For a brief moment he simply laid there, then he moved over and searched the top of the submarine for an entrance. Wouldn't do them much good if they didn't find a way inside….

Following from the back of the group, Tsuna watched as Cloud and Leveche lost there footing. Stopping and looking at Paris, Tsuna knew that it would be difficult for him to pull them both up without footing, “I hope you know a good tailor.” Tsuna said looking at Paris and reached her high over his head and stepping forward cautiously. Tsuna felt the floor giveway and Tsuna went underwater trying his best to keep Paris above water. With his free hand, he grabbed the railing and extended Paris up high and then realized his entire suit was soaked and most likely not salvageable. “I really hope you do.” Mumble Tsuna as he waited for someone to grab Paris from him.

Chapter VI: Belly of the Whale

The three interlopers and the scientist Paris had all make it onto the submarine, though the ordeal had turned out more troublesome than any of them expected. Cloud's breathing slowed, though he could still feel his heart pounding, the events of just minutes before overshadowed by a sudden moment of fear. Sitting up quickly Cloud scanned the profile of the submarine expecting Leveche and Tsuna to be doing the same thing, searching for the hatch.
” There it is, come on. ” Cloud broke the silence as he got to his feet, the heaviness of his wet clothing a sudden unexpected weight on his sore body.
Reaching the hatch, which towered above the deck of the submarine at least eight feet, Cloud clasped his cold pruned hands upon the railing that would allow him to steady himself as he made the short climb of the narrow stairs. Reaching the hatch Cloud quickly grabbed the circular wheel, giving it a sudden tug which freed it quickly and with a small squeak opened the hatch. Lights from inside dimly illuminated the passage which Cloud make quick work of traversing, looking over his shoulder to watch and count the others as they climbed down.
