The chocobo is a large flightless bird which the people of the world once frequently used for transportation. Though they were once a major impact on world transportation in modern times the chocobo has fallen out of favor for serious usage, replaced by trains and automobiles which are much faster means of travel. The chocobo however still thrive in the wild and though much of the land they once called home has been modernized and populated there are still several areas, all forested, that one can still find a chocobo. At times here on Final Fantasy VIII Annihilation players will have the chance to participate in an event which will reward them the ability to summon a chocobo from one of the seven chocobo forests located through out the world.

There are a total of seven chocobo forests scattered through out the world ( world map ). When an event starts players will be able to enter these forests and attempt to capture a chocobo. Once a player has captured a chocobo from a forest they can return to that forest any time and acquire another chocobo for travel purposes. For players who miss an event or simply don’t want to take part in one but still wish to ride a chocobo at any time Choco Billy will capture a chocobo for you, for the small price of 1,000 gil.

Traveling via chocobo is much faster then traveling on foot and doesn’t require fuel like automobiles, though there are some limitations. When traveling via chocobo a player may travel a maximum of three times in a day, on the same continent. Chocobos cannot cross oceans or rivers but can be arranged to be transported via train (for an extra 3,000 gil). Chocobos are also unable to scale mountains which can also limit their use, however for the effort they still remain a much better option then traveling by foot.

It is possible for a character to keep any chocobo they capture from a chocobo forest, or allow any chocobo to return home to it’s forest allowing your character to pick it up there again at some later time. However, the same chocobo cannot be acquired at different forests and if you leave it behind will return to it’s own forest. Players are allowed to name their chocobos and treat them as pets but unlike other final fantasy installments chocobos are not raced or breed in final fantasy viii. If you have any questions regarding chocobos and their other uses you may feel free to post them ( here ) and a manager will respond asap.
