combat is a important part of every final fantasy game, and so it should be no surprise that a big focus of ffviii annihilation will be the combat system. this page will be the home of all things related to combat so if you do plan to fight using our stat system (remember if both sides wish to do battles free form that is fine) then it will me a must for you to read this page. if you have any questions concerning the combat system ask on the ( questions board )
 
s e t t i n g  u p  a  b a t t l e
the first thing you will need to do when you wish to battle is set up the thread which will contain the battle. there are a few simple rules you will need to follow when doing so, so please make sure to take these into account before you start.
›› ( location ) :: ( it is important that all characters taking part in the battle are in the same location or it can’t be done. )
›› ( posting bios ) :: ( the first posts made in combat MUST contain all characters bios or links to them )
›› ( equipment ) :: ( make sure the equipment posted on your bio is the equipment you plan to use )

combat itself is fairly easy to understand, each character takes turns posting in order of highest speed attribute to lowest speed attribute. during a persons post the can do any of the following actions. (once unless told otherwise) please remember that many combat commands require you to have a guardian force junctioned and have your commands chosen. (you can only have four junctioned commands at once)
›› ( attack ) :: ( you can attempt to attack even without a GF junctioned, the attack formula can be found here. )
›› ( dodge ) :: ( if you were attacked you can attempt to dodge, if successful you may still attack, if not your turn is over. )
›› ( flee battle ) :: ( you can attempt to flee battle, but if not successful your turn is over.  )
›› ( guard ) :: ( if you wish to give up your turn you can guard which doubles your defense for the rest of the round. )
›› ( draw ) :: ( if you have this command junctioned you can draw magic spells from a beast, not used in pvp combat. )
›› ( magic ) :: ( junction this command to use cast magic spells in combat, for more information visit ( this ) page. )
›› ( summon ) :: ( if this command is junctioned you can summon a guardian force into combat, ( more info ) )
›› ( item ) :: ( if junctioned you can use an item from your inventory on yourself, a party member, or an opponent. )
›› ( others ) :: ( depending on your gaurdian force you may be able to junction other commands. ( read ) for more info. )

if you so choose when attacking you can always make a check to see if your attack is a critical attack. critical attacks, which i am sure many of you are familiar with, are super powerful and deal double the damage of the normal attack (attack x2 – defense). like with dodging and fleeing critical attacks are based on your luck statistic, the higher it is the better chance you have at landing one. at the bottom of this page you will find the luck tables which determine critical attacks.

as you can see from the list of commands above you always have the option to dodge or flee from combat, but doing so requires your luck attribute.. and well.. a little luck as too. when you attempt to dodge or flee you will need to make a check using our site dice roller and the luck tables located at the bottom of this page. if you are uncomfortable making your own role, or don’t trust you opponent you can always request for a staff member to make your roll (those this may cause the battle to move slowly), but the rolls are logged and so cheating is not advised for anyone.

so your turn is over? you may be thinking "what do i do now?" well the truth is you can’t really do much but sit back, watch, and plan your tactics. after your turn combat shifts to the next person and unless you guarded you are now open for attack. but combat will circle around again and you will have a chance to respond so just be patient.

so you lost? well no reason to worry, when you lose here on final fantasy viii annihilation you’re character will not die and you will still get some experience for the effort, though less then the winner obviously. when the battle is over your characters HP will be set to 1, you will not loose any items or gil (unless you got mugged), and you will be transported to the nearest town.

while the basic combat above is more then enough to really have deep tactical battles for those who want more there is more. advanced combat mainly deals with the use of elemental attack/defense and status attack/defense allow many more options when it comes to strategy. please remember using more advanced combat isn’t a must and should be decided on before battle by all parties involved.

elemental combat (involving the eight major elements, fire, water, ice, thunder, poison, wind, earth, and holy) deals with the added effects of the elements and a players weakness and resistance towards them. elements can play both ways, attack and defense, and can play key in combat strategy. when the time comes (basically when you acquire gf’s that allow you to junction to your elem attack and elm defense) you can begin to junction magic which will in turn raise the damage you do based on the elements, or in the case of defense reduce the damage received or even absorb it. to play around with junctioning elements visit ( this ) site tool.

like with elemental combat (though there are 20 status effects) status junctioning can begin when you have acquired a gf which allows you to do so. junctioning status magic can add the effects to your basic physical attacks, while junctioning them to defense can protect you against those effects. just like with elementals it is key that you just take some time and play around with seeing how well your magic junctions by using ( this ) tool.
